"I have recently been given "Dicks Picks 1970-83" in digital form which seems to consist of 120 or so CD's and have no idea where to start other than at the first and working my way through.

Would that be the best approach, DeadHeads?"

I'd go chronological, if possible/convenient.  If you can order them easily so they're chronological, that's how I"d go.  If not, just start with the first song, and press play!

From reports doing the rounds online, it like Augustus Owsley Stanley III (aka The Bear) has departed for other worlds.  His long strange trip lasted 75 years....

I was just about to post the same.  He died in a car crash in Australia.   Sad

From Barry Melton:

'Bear was in the Studio for "Electric Music for the Mind and Body" and left
an indelible imprint on the music and in my life'

From Phil Lesh:

Fare thee well, Bear

A Beautiful Mind

I received a text in the middle of last night that Bear Stanley has died in
a car accident in Australia. Bear, for me, was a true kindred spirit; when
we first met, it was as if I had met a long-lost brother from another
lifetime. I am heartbroken and devastated at his passing.

He was a friend, a brother, an inspiration, and our patron at the very
beginning of our creative lives. We owe him more than what can be counted or
added up- his was a mind that refused to accept limits, and he reinforced in
us that striving for the infinite, the refusal to accept the status quo,
that has informed so much of our work.

He never gave up his quest for pushing the limits of whatever he was working
on. We had just been discussing his concept of point-source sound
reinforcement in relation to a new project of mine, and his vision
incorporated the latest developments in technology and perceptual research.

My heart goes out to his family, for whom he had such love and pride- his
wife Sheilah, his children, grand-children, and
great-grandchildren- who have lost their patriarch.

A mind like Bear's appears very rarely, and it's been my privilege and honor
to have known and loved two such minds- Jerry and Bear. I always laugh when
I think about what Jerry once said about Bear: There's nothing wrong with
Bear that several billion fewer brain cells wouldn't fix.

I am eternally grateful for all of the gifts that Bear brought to the scene
and to the music.
Fare you well; I love you more than words can tell.

- Phil

After reading his book and hearing the stuff he put his body through, how come he still looks so young?   Cool

Sad to hear of The Bear's demise.

Guardian obit here:

I love the Garcia quote;  "There's nothing wrong with Bear that a few billion less brain cells wouldn't cure," & didn't realise "Kid Charlemagne" was about him, but having revisited them, it makes sense.

New movie, and the website has some nice stuff, including Bob Weir and Mickey Hart performing an acoustic "The Other One" and "Jack Straw".  The movie looks to be pretty good, based on an Oliver Sacks essay.

Have any of you Deadheads seen this site?  Just been launched by Mr Weir.  It looks and sounds like a highly promising idea.

The latest Road Trips offering looks to be particularly strawberry. Full show from Denver, 21st Nov '73, + a segment from the previous night with a "Mind Left Body Jam". Mmm.

I fancy this one!

There's a bonus disc for subscribers.  I didn't subscribe though.  I'm wondering what the bonus disc is all the same, with a eye to maybe grabbing one on eBay.  If anyone finds out what the bonus is, please let me know.

Bit of an anorak question: There's an excerpt from the Grateful Dead's 'Dark Star' on the 'Zabriskie point' soundtrack album; can anyone tell me what it's taken from? I assume 'Live/Dead' but I'm unfamiliar with most of their work so a bit of help to identify the recording would be most welcome...

Thanks   Grin

Yes, it's an edit from Live/Dead.  Recorded at the Fillmore West in 1969.
