So little time, so much to do

« on: December 21, 2009, 06:21:22 PM »

I am proud and delighted to announce Folk For Heroes - a benefit folk concert to help wounded soldiers and their families - will be taking place on 24 April 2010 at Rowington Village Hall.

Save the date in your diaries.  Here's a taster:

The Bands:

The John Richards Band
Red Shoes
plus support: Shaky Nancy

John Richards is well known as the composer of Honour & Praise and The Deserter, both regularly performed by Fairport Convention.  The JRBs' latest album "For Love Nor Money" confirms John’s reputation as one of our finest writers and the band’s reputation as one of the most entertaining, emerging acts on the folk scene.

Red Shoes' recently released album "Ring Around the Land", produced by Fairport's Dave Pegg, has received much critical acclaim.  It received 4 stars from Rock 'n' Reel who described it as a "Beautifully realised collection of well crafted songs rendered in attractive, melodic folk-rock style".

Tickets: £10 in advance
All profits will be donated to Help for Heroes.  The bands have kindly agreed to play for free.

Further details to be announced soon.

Edit: Added to calendar. Paul

I am very pleased to update this thread to announce that we will have one of the very best sound men for the event.

Graham Bradshaw has agreed to do the sound.  So not only will you have an evening of great music to look forward to, but you will also be able to hear it all balanced perfectly Grin

So, all that's left is to decide on is the choice of ales behind the bar Roll Eyes  I think I'd better take personal responsibility for tasting Wink

You can find out more about this Help for Heroes fundraiser by visiting www.folkforheroes.org.

BTW, if anyone else is interested in running any type of folk-based fundraiser for H4H, I will be interested to hear about it so I can help publicise it on Folkforheroes.org.

It would be great to see you.  I'll be posting info about tickets shortly.  I'll save a couple for you.

but YES we do have a bar.  Adrian Cotton has agreed to do the bar - he runs the bar at the Rowington Club (previously Rowington Working Men's Club, then Rowington Men's Club, then Rowington Men's Club Wives and Girlfriends Welcome Grin Grin) and was responsible for getting a recommendation from Camra: http://www.solihullcamra.org.uk/guide.htm

I'm hoping for a couple of really nice real ales - details in due course.

Hats off to Nicola at Hobgoblin Music (http://www.hobgoblin.com/ ) who has very kindly donated raffle prizes for our Help for Heroes fundraiser.  A folk rock combo of high renown Fez have agreed to add signatures to excite the enthusiasm of the raffle ticket buyers - watch this space for details.

Red Shoes have announced that Carolyn will sing Green Beret (for the last time) in memory of her cousin, who suffered from combat stress. It would be nice to see a few TAWers there to support Red Shoes, have a few drinks and generally enjoy what promises to be a great evening of good music Smiley

We're expecting to sell out - it's not exactly Hammersmith Odeon Grin - so book early to avoid disappointment.  Tickets for the evening can be purchased using paypal via the website www.folkforheroes.org or you can PM me and save me the Paypal fee Wink

All proceeds to Help for Heroes.

Cheers for now!

Thanks to our friends in Red Shoes having friends in high places, one of our donated Ukuleles (thanks to Hobgoblin!) has now been signed by members of the popular folk rock beat combo "The Fairport Convention" Fez  One day it will be worth a fortune Cool

Thanks very much FC Smiley

Being a consensual sort, I thought I'd ask you lot whether I should sell the raffle tickets more widely than at our Folk for Heroes night on 24 April.

If so, I'll put a "buy raffle tickets" button on the www.folkforheroes.org web site.

I have also put a "donate" button on the website, so if you can't come along but would like to make a donation, please feel free to click away.

By the way, tickets for the event are selling well, so please buy early to avoid disappointment Wink

Thank you everybody Smiley

In case anyone isn't familiar with John Richards' work, here's John Richards' "original" version of The Deserter, with a video montage that's just been put out on YouTube, with images of Iraq and Afghanistan, bringing the song right up to date.

In view of the overwhelming support for the idea from AdrianW, the Fairport Uke Fez (as it will be known in legend) will be raffled so the tickets are available to all.  I have to go an work out the technology now to run a raffle through the web-site Smiley

If anyone who wants a ticket still hasn't bought one, please PM me asap.  We're technically sold out, but I will be able to sell a few more.

If anyone wants to make a donation, you can now do so through the commision-free bmycharity.com:

https://www.bmycharity.com/V2/folkforheroesdonations

Thanks to everyone who has already made donations, which now stand at over £600.  Thanks also to Hobgoblin Music for donating the Ukes. If you are at Cropredy, check out their shop as they are good people Smiley

Thanks to the John Richards Band

and

Red Shoes

http://www.myspace.com/redshoes1

for their huge donation of their time and talent.
