Wizz Jones + Andy Twyman + Lisa Winship & Andy Mathewson: The Goose Is Out! The Ivy House,40 Stuart Road, SE15 3BE, 7 pm, Friday 23 Feb.
Tickets available in advance from here: https://www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout Also available over the bar at The Ivy House, and where available on the door on the night. Wizz began his musical career at the age of 18 leading a Country and Skiffle band called "The Wranglers" in Croydon, Surrey in 1957. He had been inspired to take up the acoustic guitar a year or so before this after hearing such guitar luminaries as Big Bill Broonzy, Rambling Jack Elliot and Muddy Waters playing at a club in London.
Wizz spent the late 50s busking his way around Europe and returned to the UK in the early 60s with a guitar style all his own. He is widely acknowledged as being a strong influence on the playing of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, and instrumental in the careers of Ralph McTell and Steve Tilston.
We are delighted that Wizz is returning to the Goose Is Out for this gig,

Andy Twyman is a jaw-droppingly good one-man band who we came across at a Blues Night at The Ivy House. He’s also very funny …..
“A one-man 100% genuine blues boogie machine…like John Lee Hooker on acid” – The Blog of the Blues
Here's Andy https://youtu.be/7lgpMtBSNHQ
Lisa Winship and Andy Mathewson play a broad range of country blues, ragtime, original songs and acoustic versions of almost anything they like from the 1920s onwards. They originally got together in 2010 and spent three years paying their dues in folk clubs, arts centres and on small concert stages around Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Surrey,

Hadrian's Union: The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, NUNHEAD, London SE15 3BE. Thursday 8 March 7PM.
Floorspots Welcome. £7 on the door, no advance booking.
Many of you will remember the fantastic Hadrian’s Union from when they supported Oysters 3 at The Ivy House last year.
Wash our beaks out, but for us, they were the high spot of the night. We have seen them live since then, and they were equally brilliant.
We think Hadrian’s Union are going places – in a good way, obviously! – and we are really looking forward to having them back at The Ivy House as headliners in their own right!
The band are an unashamed contemporary folk-rock band from the borders, influences include Lindisfarne, Jethro Tull, Stackridge and The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (Bonzos! Hooray! Right up the Goose’s street, obviously).

Leon Rosselson + Joe Wilkes + Local Singers: The Goose Is Out! The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE.Doors open 7 pm. Tickets: https://www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout
Leon Rosselson is an acclaimed singer and songwriter with more than 50 years of performing under his belt and the author of 17 children's books.
In the early days of the folk revival, he was a member of the Galliards with whom he made numerous radio and TV broadcasts and concert appearances. He started writing songs seriously (and humorously) in the early 1960s and hasn't stopped yet. His early songs were topical-satirical (some of them were featured on TV's satire show That Was The Week That Was) but he broadened out from there, absorbing different influences, from Music Hall to French Realist Song, and experimenting with different song forms.
He has performed in every conceivable venue around the country and toured North America, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland and Australia.
His song The World Turned Upside Down has been recorded and popularised by, amongst others, Dick Gaughan and Billy Bragg (who took it into the pop charts in 1985) and has been sung on numerous demonstrations in Britain and the USA
Here's Leon
https://youtu.be/H7XMdvp6cw4
Joe Wilkes
Described by R2 magazine as “a major talent”, we are delighted that Joe Wilkes will be supporting Leon tonight.
Joe was long associated with The Spitz venue in East London, where he played with Bert Jansch (R.I.P.), Beth Orton and Davy Graham (R.I.P.) amongst others.
His debut album, Spotlight, was released in 2006, and has been described as “a subtle and pastoral acoustic testament at the vanguard of the re-emerging British folk scene”
“Joe is a rare diamond in the acoustic scene, in that he has something to say. His songs mine deeply into the psyche of modern England. As a performer he has an irresistible gravity” - Bristol Folk House
Here's Joe https://youtu.be/TjYLWv8K6gU
Also doing a short spot each tonight will be some of the talented people who regularly come to our Singarounds – Bity Booker, Andy Clark, John Haseler and Adrian Roper. Edit: Date? Paul

Floorpsots welcome. £7 on the door.
The Foxglove Trio: The Goose Is Out! The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, SE15 3BE. Thursday 12 April, Doors open 7 pm.
We are delighted to be welcoming The Foxglove Trio back to the Goose, and we are sure all of you who saw them supporting Ewan McLennan at The Ivy House last year will be delighted as well!
The Foxglove Trio seek out lesser-known traditional and contemporary folk songs and, with care and creativity, transform them into moments of breathtaking beauty, via Patrick Dean’s bold melodeon playing, Cathy Mason’s intricate cello lines and Ffion Mair’s clear, soaring vocals.
The Foxglove Trio's intriguing repertoire and imaginative arrangements are presented with an infectious energy and an effortless charm. Their passionate performances will captivate you and take you on a journey from subtly political contemporary songs to jaunty Yorkshire tales and soulful Welsh laments.
"A wonderful band, with a lovely take on traditional folk songs, as well as great original material." Annie Windley, Softly Softly events, London

Melrose Quartet + Alden, Patterson & Dashwood + Sandtimer: The Goose Is Out! The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, SE15 3BE. Friday April 27, 7 pm.
Tickets https://www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout
Well, given their members (Nancy Kerr, James Fagan, Jess Arrowsmith and Richard Arrowsmith) we should have known, but hey we were blown away when we saw The Melrose Quartet live, so we are delighted to have booked them this year!
From deep roots in their hometown’s vibrant music, song and dance scene, to smashing concert appearances in the UK and abroad, Sheffield-based Melrose Quartet have attracted a reputation for making music that truly connects with people. All four are internationally renowned singers, instrumentalists, writer/composers and teachers and in 2017 they were proud to be named the new patrons of Whitby Folk week.
Norwich based folk / Americana trio Alden Patterson and Dashwood weave rich vocal harmonies, fiddle, dobro, guitar and mandolin around beautifully written original songs and melodies. Their music takes influence from folk traditions from both sides of the Atlantic with uplifting instrumentals and self-penned songs depicting tales of young travellers, sleepy seas and their affection for home.
Their album “Call me Home” was fRoots Editor’s Choice Album of the Year in 2016.
Sandtimer is a British folk-rock duo formed in Hampshire by musicians Robert Sword and Simon Thomas. Featuring close vocal harmonies, percussive guitar rhythms and intricate, Appalachian-infused guitar textures, Sandtimer sing songs of reflection and escapism. They strive to combine innovative ideas with classic songcraft to create something at once unique and familiar. Melrose Quartet https://youtu.be/44EbDyNTmj8

Gemma Khawaja: The Goose Is Out! Thursday May 10, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Rd, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE. Floorspots welcome £7 on the door, 7pm
We are delighted to be welcoming Gemma Khawaja back to the Goose. She was last here supporting Alasdair Roberts in November, and we are really pleased that she is now headlining in her own right.
We first came across Gemma and her beautiful singing at Leigh Folk Festival a few years back (a great free festival by the sea which is always good for talent spotting!)
Gemma is a singer & guitarist from the Midlands, now based in Norfolk, who plays and sings traditional songs of the British Isles and creates her own songs inspired by rural poets, mythology, and folklore.
Her arrangements of traditional songs emphasise the universal stories and themes found in folk traditions and sensitively draw out the richness and beauty of the old melodies.
She is the winner of the 2013 Islington Folk Club Trad2Mad unaccompanied song competition.

Jim Moray + Counter's Creek + The Norfolk Broads: The Goose Is Out! Friday 25 May, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead London SE15 3BE.
https://www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout
For 15 years Jim Moray has been at the forefront of a new movement in English traditional music. His debut album Sweet England changed the sound of folk song and won a brace of awards for its innovative melding of orchestration and electronica. Subsequent albums embraced everything from grime to Johnny Marr-esque guitar pop, but at their heart was always Jim’s unmistakeable soulful and yearning voice; singing old songs in a new way. His sixth album Upcetera heralds a new chapter for the producer and has received the best reviews of his career, including five stars from Mojo, fRoots and R2 magazines.
His reimagining of English traditional music found him awarded the unprecedented combination of ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Album’ at the 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
We're delighted Jim is returning to play a solo gig at The Goose Is Out!
Counter’s Creek is an acoustic folk trio based in London who make original music inspired by the folk music of the British Isles and beyond. Expect to hear jigs, reels, grooves from Eastern Europe & West Africa, catchy melodies with closely interwoven harmonies allied to a real sense of swing and dance energy.
The Norfolk Broads are a four-piece female ensemble who enjoy singing low-pitched folk songs about love, despair, and dastardly boyfriends.
They bonded over maritime worksongs and failed romances in the alto section of the Trad Academy Sea Shanty Choir, deciding to form a girl-group during a long car ride to Cornwall in 2015. Since then, they have performed their spirited harmonies at festivals and venues in London and further afield, including Wilton’s Music Hall, the Southbank Centre, Folk East Festival and on board the Cutty Sark.
The Broads supply their repertoire of traditional stories with a very contemporary verve and energy, using old songs to fuel new takes on the lives of women both past and present.

***Russell Joslin & Sarah McCaig*** The Goose Is Out! Thursday 14 June
**Floorspots welcome** £7 on the door.
We are really pleased that Russell Joslin is coming back to the Goose!
Currently touring accompanied by the darkened vocals of Australian singer Sarah McCaig – ‘the musical charge they generated together was truly electrifying’ – Musicboxfolk.com
“He reframes folk’s storytelling tradition and brings it kicking and screaming into the 21st century, and is – without doubt – one of the most versatile and riveting young talents on the scene.” – Clickmusic.com
“This is folk music refracted through the prism of Velvet Underground , Husker Du and The Sisters of Mercy. Don’t expect discreet and decorous folk; rather, Joslin empties his heart with honesty, vitality and passionate abandon” – Rock n Reel
“Living proof of how fresh, vigorous and abrasive an acoustic songwriter can and should be in the 21st Century.’ – Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music

Luke Jackson + Anne-Marie Sanderson + Les Elvin: The Goose Is Out! Friday 29 June 7pm. The Ivy House 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3BE. Tickets https://www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout
Luke is a Singer-Songwriter from Canterbury, Kent. 2017 was another busy year with Kansas Folk Alliance in the USA, double-header tours with Amy Wadge and then Rebecca Loebe plus the usual Solo, Duo and Trio shows all over the UK and Europe. 2018 has started well with the release of Luke’s first live album to great reviews and is shaping up to be another busy year. It's been a while since we welcomed Luke Jackson to the Goose, so we are delighted that he is able to come back tonight.
We still remember walking into an absolutely rammed room at Rochester Sweeps festival some years back to see this very young (as he was then – he started publicly performing at thirteen!) singer and guitarist holding the whole room absolutely spellbound. We have been following his career with great interest since then!
http://lukepauljackson.com/
https://youtu.be/m9qqktzbkik
We came across Anne–Marie Sanderson only very recently, when she approached us for a gig, and we really liked her voice and her songs
“Her voice is evocative of birds in flight – soaring, gliding, swooping – and it finds its home among the tall trees of her deft guitar work. Describing Sanderson‘s distinctive indie-folk music in these terms is apt; she is an artist who casts a careful eye and attentive ear to the natural environment, alternating between wide-eyed wonder and wry observation.
As well as drawing from a host of musical influences, some of Sanderson‘s songs pay homage to literary greats, and she is currently recording a collection of songs inspired by authors including Robert Macfarlane, Barbara Kingsolver, and Doris Lessing.
With two EPs already released into the wild, “Book Songs Vol. 1” is due early in 2018, followed by a UK tour.”
https://youtu.be/o8c2JT2ogt0
Coincidentally, another connection from Rochester Sweeps Festival, and this is Les Elvin!
Les plays guitar and harmonica. His material covers a wide range of styles from across the British Isles and reflects Americana influences. It also includes Celtic and dance instrumentals. We think he’s great, and we hope you will too!

LUKE JACKSON GIG CANCELLED
We are very sorry to say that our concert on Friday 29 June has been canceled, but delighted to say that we will be rescheduling it for next year.
Luke, his agent, and the Goose all suspect that a certain sporting event may have something to do with lack of advance ticket sales ……. 😀
If you bought tickets online, WeGotTickets will be contacting you and arranging a refund. If you bought tickets at The Ivy House, they will be contacting you directly. Please get in touch with us if you need any further information.

Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne: The Goose Is Out! Thursday 113 September, The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, SE15. £7 On the door, 7PM. Floorspots Welcome.
Cohen is one of the best singers and musicians we have ever seen, of any age. You won't want to miss this gig!
Cohen has been a musician since the age of 6 and took to squeezeboxes in his teens. He has since developed into a fine player of both the melodeon and anglo concertina.
He is part of the extraordinary trio Granny's Attic though has recently been dazzling audiences with his solo performances especially at many this summer's folk festivals, where he has received rapturous applause and standing ovations.
His solo repertoire consists mainly of traditional songs with accompaniment from anglo concertina or melodeon. Alongside this Cohen also performs traditional tunes and the occasional un-accompanied song. Cohen’s style, approach and repertoire is rooted in the English tradition, however material and influences from Scottish, Irish, American and European traditions are also present in Cohen’s performance.
Here's Cohen https://youtu.be/-8hCt5AwoeI Edit: Sorry, can't find 113th of September on the calendar. Are you using Elvish dates?

Solasta: The Goose Is Out! The Ivy House,40 Stuart Road, SE15 3BE. Thursday 11 October **Floorspots welcome** £7 on the door.7PM
We think Solasta are going places! Their new album, " A Cure for The Curious" is The Guardian Folk album of the month at the moment and described as "Fizzingly good new-generation folk".
Solasta supported Jackie Oates at the Goose a while ago, and we are delighted to be welcoming them back to the Goose as a headliner in their own right!
Solasta play dynamic interpretations of Celtic based material rooted firmly in tradition, incorporating elements from diverse musical worlds including classical, jazz and early music – hooray!
“Solasta gave one of the most exhilarating and enchanting performances we have ever had….breathtakingly good, consummate young musicians with true flair and imagination” – Sheena Wellington, Traditional Music Association of Scotland??.

Trimdon Grange Explosion, Lords Of Thyme, Little Big Noise: The Goose Is Out! Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, SE15 3BE. Friday 26 October, 7PM. Tickets here: https://www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout Trimdon Grange Explosion is an improvising psych-folk ensemble from North-East London and core members of The Eighteenth Day of May, who split up around ten years ago – Alison Cotton, Ben Phillipson, Karl Sabino and Mark Nicholas. Musically TGE is a psychedelic fusion of the modal rock of the Velvet Underground with traditional English Folk.
The Lords Of Thyme are traditionally English in the same way that Pentangle or Fotheringay were traditionally English, but also in the same way that Julian Cope undoubtedly is. A hazy, blissed out, ancient and modern country of the strangest imaginations.
Joe Woolley, Tali Trow, and Pat Kenneally first played together as part of Michael Tyack’s compellingly odd ensemble Circulus before forming The Lords Of Thyme with Michelle Griffiths of the progressive Morris dance side The Belles Of London City.
Little Big Noise is the solo-acoustic folk/punk project of native South East London singer/songwriter Nick Torry.
