Metallica have signed up for Neil Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit gig.
The event, held every year to raise money for children with severe speech and physical impairments, was co-founded by Young and his wife Pegi and this year’s will be its 21st. The event has featured some big stars in its history, including REM, Foo Fighters, Springsteen and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, but Metallica are perhaps the biggest (and certainly loudest) for some years. Coupled with the Live Earth gig earlier this year it seems the metal legends really are “giving something back” at the moment.
This year’s event runs from 27th – 28th October at Mountain View Amphitheatre, near San Francisco and is also set to star Jerry Lee Lewis, Tom Waits and Eddie Vedder (in his ninth appearance at the event). Vedder will be without his usual bandmates but will instead be performing with Flea from the Chili Peppers and ex-Pearl Jam bandmate Jack Irons.
