The two lovely people in the video are the parents (aged 93 and 86) of the film director, he filmed them at the weekend in their daily morning routine... they are a contented happy couple...  |

Here's a rarity - a rare BBC documentary on the Albion Band from 1979! A version has been doing the rounds with dodgy colour, but while this one is not spectacular it's a lot better; no constant moving to B&W and back. Including: Interviews with Ashley Hutchings and Richard Thompson, along with Keith Dewhurst in relation to the Lark Rise stage show, and various live excerpts from that show. Live excerpts from unrecorded line-ups (Barry Dransfield, Melanie Harrold, Doug Morter, Martin Simpson, Andy Roberts & Dave Mattacks) and the Albion River Hymn with Maddy Prior, Simon Nicol, Phil Pickett etc. Footage of the Albions in the studio, and the Kickin' Up The Sawdust band live. The 'Rise Up Like The Sun' line-up (more or less) rehearsing Alright Jack, which various members took with them to Home Service. And plenty more moments of musical and historical interest! Thanks, Michael, I've just watched these.
I don't know what to make of Ashley sometimes. He can come across as a bit 'up his own backside', a bit humourless. But it's a great snapshot of that period that I had no idea had been captured on film.

Farewell Farewell, Rainbow over the Hill and especially Shirley's Bonny Labouring Boy are wonderful, much better quality than the tape of a tape snippets previously on the tube.
I remember seeing them outside the NT on a freezing cold Boxing Day in the early 70s, Shirley in a fur coat (allowed in those days). Anyone remember that and what they performed?

Thanks for posting those, Michael. That was really interesting. Loved the rehearsal of Alright Jack, a good 6 or 7 years before the Home Service version was released.

I think the serious Ashley thing may come out of the folk revival when 'folk' and the 'tradition' was taken ever so seriously and there was little fun in it. Cecil Sharp House was a revered Holy Grail and the tradition had to be explored in a scholarly manner!Ewan Mc Coll said you could only sing song from the area you came from!!! Folk police. I preferred my folk with more of a smile and a jig! Then of course we got, Wrigley,Connolley.Harding, Carrott, Digance who turned folk into comedy and folk clubs went in to decline. I was lucky enough to see all the Mystery Plays and Lark Rise at the National in the late 70's early 80's. Brian Glover as God! They were incredible ,innovative pieces and the music was more than a key part. I got a book called Singing form the Floor ,for my b/day this month and it's a very, very good read and an evocation of the rise and fall of the folk club and the folk revival. |

I noticed a review of that book in the latest Mojo. Jules Got it,read it. Even though I have never set foot in a folk club and was not around at the peak of the movement I thought it was a magnificent read,highly recommended. |
