I saw him at Bury St Edmunds Apex. Shared the bill with The Animals, or what was left of them. A great night seated amongst a predominatey grey haired audience. A fine guitarist with a fine line in chat as well. He charmed my teenage daughter, sitting in the front row, after embarrasing her during his intro to Midnight Hour he came across and handed her a signed plectrum after the Green Onions encore. He probably had dozens of them but I think that we got the only one that night.

Wholeheartedly agree.   I've seen them about a half dozen times and love them live, but I've never considered listening to any of the studio stuff.  Lyrically, the material is standard (at best) and vocally, a bit too nasally for me - but the melodies are excellent and the playing more than makes up for it.

Wasn't that the Brixton Academy shows where Cropper was absent (ill?) and Poncho played instead (but with the MGs)?

You could be right. My memory is perforated.

Steve Cropper was a modest genius. A very pleasant man, with many accomplishments to be proud of.

I have endeavoured to listen to anything I have discovered him playing on, over the years.

May he rest in peace.

I got to see Steve Cropper once as Dave Mason’s guest a few years ago. I felt honored to be in his presence. Some friends saw the actual Blues Brothers on their 1981ish tour. RIP

I saw Steve and Duck Dunn with the Blues Brothers band in 89 at the Hammersmith Odeon and the following year with Booker T at the Town & Country Club in Kentish Town. Also saw Duck with EC back in 85.

But Steve Cropper was a real inspiration and I'm sure I'm not the only amateur guitarist who has picked up a Fender Telecaster in a music shop after seeing The Blues Brothers film. And yes, I bought that guitar.  Cool

Spent the morning listening to Stax records. What a wonderful guitarist - passionate, understated, subtle. For me he has been to guitarists what Charlie Watts or Levon Helm were to drummers. Nothing flash.

Always liked the story about the Hollywood party where Jack Nicholson ignored all the big film stars and walked across to Steve Cropper:”I just wanted to shake the hand that wrote Dock of the Bay.”

I only saw him live the once...with Neil and the MGs, Finsbury Park, 1993.  That was a fab day.  RIP, Sir.

I saw him then and I think a second time, also with Neil, just after Are You Passionate came out. Man was a true musical titan. RIP indeed.

Where else better to see a band named Railroad Earth than in the Caverns of Grundy, Tennessee on February 21?

Now they would be a superb act for Cropredy!  Grin

I saw them in Glasgow 15-20 years back, on the back of a time spent loving music by bands like String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band etc etc.  That whole bluegrass jam band scene created some pretty decent music.  I have to say they've entirely dropped off my radar, and the only recorded music of theirs I've got does nothing for me but they were great live, and I strongly imagine still are....
