Title: A non-scientific but interesting summary
Post by: Adam on February 08, 2023, 07:51:08 PM
I took a look at how many monthly followers some of my favourite bands have on Spotify, and it chucked out some interesting results:
Fairport 440k
Richard Thompson 452k
Longest johns 809k
Show of hands 20k
Sparks 495k
Duran 7.5m

My initial thoughts were (very generally) that people tend to like bands of a similar age to them, having discovered them when young, etc. Fairport, RT, Sparks are of a similar age, so their fans will (generally) listen to their music on similar platforms.  Longest Johns will have generally younger fans who embrace streaming platforms. This doesn’t explain why Show of Hands have so few - maybe their fans are more likely to buy physical media via their website? Duran blasting it - not bad for a so-called 80s boyband (joking, just in case you didn’t know my total admiration for them!). I’m not saying X are better than Y, but thought it quite interesting.

Any thoughts?
