Title: Joni Mitchell archive
Post by: dog-nap (Ian) on October 28, 2020, 04:56:31 PM
The first volume of Joni Mitchell’s archive is finally being released in a couple of days, covering her early days on the folk club circuit.  Pretty much everything is previously unreleased (officially, at least).  Amazon is selling the 5-cd box set at £64.99.  Has anyone seen it cheaper elsewhere?  Burning Shed is slightly more expensive once p & p has been added.

I saw it selling from the label on Facebook. Similar price £63?

Interesting piece in the Grauniad.  To be perfectly honest I'm more interested in any following volume(s), but I could be tempted... https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/oct/27/joni-mitchell-interview-archives-early-years-cameron-crowe?fbclid=IwAR2bQ5ceaIhNubhaMCbyqyIHmzY6EsdJC3sNuyqB32l-hUKy9n8Pr5Tu2UU

Found it on sale cheap on a US website - might be worth it even with shipping and import tax?  :)

Many thanks, Ian.  That’s a great find.  I’ll check it out.

Thanks for posting that, David.  Very interesting.  I don’t subscribe to any papers online, so I’m used to them fading away after a paragraph or two.  She still does not sound convinced about the value of her early work, but I’ve heard a fair bit of it on various boots over the years and I have always enjoyed it.  The lyrics of some of her early songs may be a bit iffy, but her singing and playing have always been astonishing.  Besides, this set does include the period when Fairport started to take an interest in her work.  There are a couple of versions of Eastern Rain on it, as I expect you have noticed.

Joni Mitchell gig (sort of) https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/jul/25/joni-mitchell-gives-first-full-live-performance-since-2002?CMP=share_btn_fb&fbclid=IwAR1mUs4UhhDXD5lRRU26p45uHROD9EC6XeozFgWOQlXccX6nkA5JOwwKfOk

Hmmm.  I remain to be convinced.  The clips I've seen and heard are quite challenging (and I speak as someone who saw and loved Nic Jones with his boy a few years ago).  Here's a representative example.  Make your own mind up https://twitter.com/JasonReidUK/status/1551500933435203584  My own feeling is it's nice it happened but I'm not really sure it's presentationally that pleasing to watch.

And I'm sorry I couldn't help but scoff at Marcus Mumford's involvement....why would you?

There's a nice piece about the Newport set (to which I've finally - Mumford appearance notwithstanding - mellowed) in the Oct Uncut, along with a great lengthy piece on the Asylum albums.

Talking of Joni - can somebody put me out of my misery...did she ever play the UK after 1983?  I can't seem to easily find the answer online.  I know why I missed 1983, but if she ever played after that I need to have a long hard look at myself and find out why I didn't go...
