Title: Richard and Linda Box Set
Post by: davidmjs on July 07, 2020, 06:39:34 AM
Have people been keeping up with the fun and games on Linda T's FB page?

She's just leaked info (2 weeks before it was supposed to be announced) of a R< box set - 8 remastered albums plus loads of rare stuff.  Put together by Andrew Batt.

Whoop, and indeed whoop.

Yes, rather frustrating I've found. Simply no info anywhere else about the box. Actually,  I'm more likely to go for the vinyl reissues of R & LT albums, which were due months ago, and then the lock down happened.

So maybe:

Bright Lights
Hokey Pokey
Pour Down Like Silver
First Light
Sunnyvista
Shout out The Lights

plus a CD of live tracks (possibly In Concert '75) and one of radio sessions/outtakes (The Gerry Rafferty Shoot Out The Lights tracks?) ?

Only Rafferty tracks present are the previously released ones.  All known demos present.  Ditto the 1977 live material.  Not many surprises for dedicated collectors, but it's hard to argue with the beautiful way it's all been gathered up together.

Maybe Andy Batt might be able to give us a heads up ?
Somebody should write a book on re-issuing old recordings  , the pro's and con's , should new technology be used to improve stuff (Sandy's live recording Gold Dust CD) , the legal side , tracking down old mastertapes , old radio sessions , who get's paid anything
One for Clinton as a follow up to the bootleg tome?
I'd buy it even if it was by him

I am probably less qualified than others to opine, but that's never stopped me before. They're unique IMO because they are fully realized studio recordings of most of the tunes that turned up subsequently on SOTL, with different backing musicians, somewhat different arrangements, and occasionally Linda performing vocals that RT performed on SOTL. As a completist and collector, these are inherently valuable to me even though RT reportedly disliked the Rafferty-produced product. For the record, I too prefer the Joe Boyd versions of these tunes.

It's a shame not to include Linda's rendition of Don't Renege and the Rafferty version of Wall of Death. On the other hand, Modern Woman is perhaps best consigned to the history books.

I was hoping for more from Once Brave Henry because Linda's voice was so good and there is not so much coverage of the early days. But with Andrew performing his usual magic, this looks like a stellar release.

I remember that in the notes to Watching The Dark that having not heard the Rafferty tracks in a long time that Richard was pleasantly surprised by a few of the arrangements, which is why I suppose they made it to that set in the first place. And for sure that version of Back Street Slide is terrific.

Hi Jules,

Richard and Linda were very much involved in this boxset and so it wasn't always possible to include everything us fans would wish. As an fyi i didn't use the remixed versions of the Rafferty material- except where stated on disc 8.
In terms of the unreleased, there are definitely some gems for the hardened collector, which i'm quite pleased about really, as Richard has already been comprehensively anthologised!

That's always been Rt's reply when asked but I wonder if just didn't want these reissued? He's quite strong minded about his ealier work and not always complimentary. Perhaps he's mellowed or perhaps the masters have suddenly come to light.

Yes, I always thought it was less a case of the tapes being lost and more a case that Richard put them down somewhere and wasn't too bothered about just where he put them, or about looking for them.  I mean, when all is said and done, they were definitely the weakest two albums he'd been involved in up to that point.

OK perhaps there are no ballads right up there with the very top songs from the previous three records, and nothing to match Night Comes In. And yet it's a measure of the man that there is still some strong material there--- First Light, Strange Affair, Restless Highway, Borrowed Time, Choice Wife/Died for Love, You're Gonna Need Somebody, I could go on. It will be fascinating to see whether some of the problems were on the production side and if so whether Andrew's remastering is able to improve these two very enjoyable albums.

I would reach for First Light and even Sunnyvista over Hokey Pokey which I was a disappointment to me at the time after the amazing Bright ligts album. First Light has some great tracks, Pavanne, House of Cards, First Light, Died For Love, all top notch tracks. It's a gentler album and more thoughtful than some so I guess it gets overlooked.

Hi all. Andrew is a close friend so I've been lucky and privy to witness all the hard work he's put into this box set. I can tell you that it is fantastic. For me, the best part is the absolute first-class mastering job he has done on both First Light and Sunnyvista - I thought I knew those albums inside out but the care and attention he has put into the mastering has brought out all sorts of things that were a little buried and bloated in the past.

The reels were definitely lost - the rights were quite complex on them and have changed over the years so they were sent from pillar to post as the terms dictated. Richard and Linda now own both albums outright. I think RT just wasn't bothered about finding them because he wasn't that keen on either album

I must confess that I bought a tape of "First Light" back in the 80s but mislaid it years ago and never bothered replacing it.  Pretty weak stuff compared with "Hokey Pokey" & IWTSTBLT

I gave my copy of Sunnyvista a listen last night (Carthage LP, 1983). I think its rather good, but what do I know, I'm pretty much allergic to I Want to See etc. Actually have a copy still sealed, purchased in the 90s iirc.

Seriously though, that record is wall-to-wall perfect songs (I'll allow for The Great Valerio being a bit tedious, but that's about all).  It's a big time 'singalong' album for me.

Actually Jules I think it's the singalong factor that seems to put me
off. I think it got a lot of airplay on the likes of Bob Harris in its day and I reached that 'oh not this again'  state. Particularly with the title song.

Just realised once again last night I have Strict Tempo sealed,  too. Both albums date from a Ryko sale when the company went down, iirc.

Aaaargh.  I loathe Amazon and am desperately trying to avoid buying it from them.  If anyone knows of another retailer (preferably one that pays some UK taxes) getting even remotely close to that sort of price do please post details up here.  From speaking to a couple of record dealing mates, it's barely economic for them to retail at below £75, and probably £79.99 - Capitalism, innit.  Eurgh.  :(

Norman Records are offering this set for £74.

Nice interview.  My fave record shop in Wales (Tangled Parrot) is getting it to me in Hay for £70, which I suspect may be doing me a bit of a favour, so I'm very happy with that....

I think that would be Simon with an advance copy. Why have they left it so late to tell us? It was still saying arriving today an hour ago.

I'll confess to going for the download option from evil A****n, and I'm listening to it now - but it's taken me the best part of an hour to download the files. A more arse about face download I've never experienced - bits were missing, in the wrong order and apparently there was a tech problem. An online chat later to an A****n agent who put the files in my Music Library, so I've downloaded the files in blocks, checked the running order against an online Universal/Island records tracklisting, and still 2 tracks are missing. Fortunately, they're alternative live versions I probably won't miss. All done now, filed in the correct order and backed up, time for breakfast...

Ironically, as I type, the track playing is "Amazon Queen (Crash The Party)" !  ;D

I think I have been lucky on this occasion. Amazon do seem to have this problem routinely with boxed sets. It happened with one of the Tears For Fears boxes earlier in the year. I pre-ordered but delivery got significantly delayed, though it did not particularly bother me as long as I got it, which I did.

I hope the same thing does not happen with the next TFF and Tom Petty boxes next month.

Just had confirmation whilst writing this that mine is arriving between 11.30 and 1.30 today.

Part of  this I think is that the set is not available in the US because of copyright issues with a couple of the albums so there are a lot of US buyers purchasing from Amazon UK and importing their copies.

For my 27 quid I got everything minus 3 tracks it would seem, and I'm unsure why they're missing. As I said in my earlier post, the missing tracks are a couple of live versions I'll probably only listen to once, but I'll chase them up over the weekend when I've listened to the rest.

The live version of "Layla" from First Light is playing now, and the guitar work is incendiary ! I believe at that point in his timeline, he hadn't played electric guitar for a couple of years - it sounds like he's really getting something out of his system.

Yes, it sounds as if they are playing catch-up.  I had the ‘delayed until October-November’ message yesterday and have heard nothing since.  However, yesterday the box set was listed as unavailable on Amazon’s website, but today it is on sale again, citing delivery dates of 18-22 September.  So, I am hoping to receive mine sometime next week.

Be warned, there are many reports of audible defects with the discs and discs simply not reading in people's players. There seems to have been quite a substantial manufacturing screw up with this set.

I have got off lightly, only encountering one audible defect, a glitch in the last couple of seconds of disc 7 but I did have issues trying to rip two of the discs to my PC.

Tom Robinson's show on 6music last night featured a 40 min preview of the box set, playing 9 tracks introduced by Richard & Linda.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000mjgf

Part of me regrets not having pushed the 'order' button when Amazon dropped the price briefly a few weeks ago, but I hesitated already having much of the material.

It's a shame to hear of pressing/mastering problems with the release. It's mentioned again in a brief review under the discogs entry https://www.discogs.com/Richard-Linda-Thompson-Hard-Luck-Stories-1972-1982/release/15898038.

There's an enthusiastic review in Saturday's Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/sep/12/richard-and-linda-thompson-hard-luck-stories-1972-1982-review-box-set-31-unreleased-tracks

So, how is everybody getting on with this? I have started a poll on the Steve Hoffman site to ascertain the scale of the manufacturing problems. So far only one person has reported a set which plays perfectly from start to finish. The box now seems to have been withdrawn from sale by many vendors. Super Deluxe Edition have an enquiry in with Universal about it all but it is not at all clear where this leaves everyone who has already taken delivery of faulty copies.

That has been my experience so far but there are many people saying they can't even get discs to play, that players don't recognise them, that they stop part way through, that they make a terrible racket whilst they play or that there are certain tracks that stall and skip and judder, the Rafferty Back Street Slide, the live Calvary Cross and the First Light demo seemingly being the worst culprits.

On the Steve Hoffman site last night.

"Hi All,

These technical issues are just devastating to me. I was so looking forward to your music feedback, and reading all of this issues is really sad. I have no involvement in what discs and pressing plant are used, so i can offer no technical comment on any of the errors you are having, but thanks for starting a separate thread, as it seems this problem is extensive. I will take this up officially tomorrow, and having a separate place for you guys to register issues will make it easier and clearer for me to bring it to the attention of the right people and be specific about the problems involved.

best
A "

Paul Sinclair from Super Deluxe Edition has also taken up the case with Universal.

Just to add, if you do experience problems and you want to document them for Andy's attention (he is gathering evidence to present to the record company) yo can do so here. https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/richard-linda-thompson-hard-luck-stories-playing-ripping-problems-or-not.995773/

I ripped the first four discs to iTunes last night, and noticed a couple of songs where it was noisy and slow.  I have just listened to Pour Down Like Silver (disc 4), and the sound is fine, even on The Calvary Cross, which is one of the tracks that was slow and noisy in ripping, and where others have reported issues. Phew!

Haven't listened to any of the rest yet, so we'll see if it is OK too

Yes there are a few howlers in the book and some factual errors too such as referring to the Joe Boyd produced Julie Covington album as her first solo album (it was her second). It is a shame as it is otherwise a beautiful and informative book.

I'd take that as a fairly clear sign not to buy stock that becomes available in a few days time.

I'd also be a lot happier if there was a statement from Universal themselves.

Well the better option until they figure out what they are going to do would be to recall it from sale. Then nobody can purchase it, innocently or otherwise.

Just wondering whether anyone has yet tried comparing the version of Shoot Out The Lights on the box with the one released by Rhino Handmade in 2010 to see if one sounds better than the other?

If you have a CD player, you could very well be just fine listening to the discs.  If, however, you rip discs to listen that way, then yes, you'll likely be better off with Spotify.

In my case, the same discs that don't rip also don't play. In fact one disc that did rip but only with great difficulty does not play but the ripped file does. As far as I am aware the entire set is not available on Spotify, unless that has changed. I don't do Spotify.

The Spotify version doesn't include the live tracks from Theatre Royal on disc 5 and all of the Shoot Out The Lights disc aside from the two Gerry Rafferty version bonus tracks. The 2010 Rhino edition of Shoot Out... with live album is on Spotify though.

Let me guess. Calvary Cross & Back Street Slide? That was my experience, though the latter did glitch very slightly on flayback in the last couple of seconds. Have you played the discs on a regular player? Calvary Cross won't behave at all for me. Haven't tried Back Street Slide.

I don't have the box set but your high placing of Pour Down Like Silver led me to re-listen as it's a album I don't remember as a particular favourite. Muddy, thin sound of the CD aside, it made much more impact than I thought it would. Still going to put SOTL slightly ahead of this one despite the brilliance of a couple of Silver songs, but it's a really close thing.

I’ve never understood why First Light has been held in such low regard.
I have had the original album since 1978 and it has always been a favourite.
I also can’t hear too much wrong with the general sound of the album, so maybe that is more noticeable on the Ryko CD version which I am not familiar with.

Time for the other half of your work! Persuade me that PDLS is more essential than SOTL. One is an album of union, one is an album of separation so a clear divide. PDLS does have Beat the Reteat, Dimming of the Day but then SOTL has so many great songs and playing.

I prefer PDLS because the melodies are closer to folk melodies, and this often means that I find them more emotional, and that they have a deeper resonance for me.

I adore SOTL (who doesn't?!), but I know that Linda struggled with her vocals, and I agree with her that she often nailed her songs better during the Rafferty sessions.

But ultimately, it's down to a headcount of songs that I would have on a best-of playlist.  PDLS has 6 (Streets of Paradise; For Shame of Doing Wrong; Night Comes In; Jet Plane in a Rocking Chair; Beat the Retreat; Dimming of the Day), versus SOTL with 5 (Walking on a Wire; Man in Need; Shoot Out the Lights; Back Street Slide; Wall of Death).

I'm definitely with Jules on this one...

Are we still official statement-less about the box set?  Are they just hoping all the noise stops (and I don't mean on the CDs)?  Maybe it has already.  Were the faults all imaginary?  Should I just get on and buy it?  Questions, questions.

Andy says that Universal are definitely dealing with it and will put it right, though they are being somewhat slow to say anything officially. The noise hasn't stopped. Check out Steve Hoffman or Amazon. It is about a 72 percent error rate. Current theory is disc warping is to blame. I haven't checked whether my discs are warped yet but many people are also reporting heavy disc scarring and I certainly have some of that.

I might be a lone voice, but I’m really enjoying Sunnyvista. The songs have more bite and energy than First Light, and are just catchier than Pour Down Like Silver (although Night Comes In is peerless). It might be because I haven’t heard it in years, whereas I’m very familiar with the others.

Call me suspicious, but I reckon it will miraculously be re-pressed once everyone has rushed out and purchased the dodgy discs.  I've still got my copy reserved so I'll grab it now, but I'm a bit annoyed to have to deal with the hassle tbh....as always it puts the onus on the buyer when they know full well there is actually a problem from their end.  Anyway, I'm going to try and focus on the music from here on in.

They could have withdrawn all unsold stock (immediately they became aware of the problem), much of which they know to be faulty. As always, the onus is therefore placed on the purchaser and the burden removed from those responsible for the failing.

No you're not alone. It's not a great record, some weak tracks and no great ones, but it's a good listen and Andy Batt's efforts are a massive upgrade on my old Carthage tape. Borrowed Time and You're Gonna Need Somebody are early examples of a seam which Richard would return to mine time after time.

I guess if you're feeling contemplative, there's nothing on Sunnyvista to rival First Light and Strange Affair, but side two of that album does go on a bit.

I’ve never understood why First Light has been held in such low regard.

I bought First Light a year or two after I'd acquired, and loved, Hokey Pokey and IWTSTBLT. I played FL over and over again trying to get into it - but failing.
I recall playing it in the car and and an unimpressed friend joined in the chorus of  the title track, thinking RT & LT were singing "The Sla-a-a-a-g... the sla-aaa-ag". I don't think that helped.

My copy seems to be fine, except, maybe, the final song on the final disc ("High School Confidential"). And I'm not sure it's a disc problem, it might be the recording itself - perhaps the original tape got spliced. Can anyone here verify whether a beat gets missed at the 1:30 mark on your copy?

Superb mastering overall, though. REALLY liked how First Light now sounds. And I also don't believe the Rafferty stuff has ever sounded better, "I'm A Dreamer" in particular.

Sent an email to UMC a couple of minutes after 1pm, received download code about 5 mins ago!! UMC say they'll be in touch soon re replacement discs. Pretty decent service, I'd say...

I'm getting pretty peeved now. I emailed them just before 8pm last Wednesday and have heard absolutely nothing.  >:( And I bought two of these things.

Many people who both bought and emailed later than I did have already received their responses. I have just chased UMG again but I'm not impressed.

What did you have to provide as evidence, Paul?  An invoice?

I created pdfs of my amazon order & delivery note and attached them to my email.

I almost feel guilty now I know Al et al haven't yet had a response. I guess I was just fortunate.

Me too (the guilt, especially after my earlier anti-corporate ranting).  I emailed, and in 15 minutes (have just looked again...it was actually 3 minutes) I've got a download code (and a promise re: replacement discs).  Sorry (and thanks again).

ps I really must stop using parentheses

I may have to take you up on that David if I can't get them to respond but it doesn't solve the replacement disc issue. But thanks.

Could be that, Jules. I did specifically request the code and replacement discs. Could also be that UMC hadn't actually got anyone dealing with emails until yesterday, maybe they had severely underestimated the responses? Not making excuses for UMC btw!

I emailed UMC at 09.00 yesterday regarding 2 discs sticking & skipping & had a positive response by 13.00.  A download code was included, although not requested.  Just lucky I guess.

I suspect the most likely thing with people who have not had a response is that their emails (for whatever reason) are just being directed into junk/spam/whatever and that because of the volume in the inbox that isn't being monitored.  Why not try from another email address?

Also, and sorry if I'm teaching people to suck eggs, but you did include evidence of purchase (receipt, photos etc)?

As you can imagine because of the deluge of downloaded WAV copies (due to their manufacturing balls up), it must be about the most readily available high quality digital downloadable box set of all time.....it's literally everywhere it shouldn't be.

Well I've finally had a chance to listen to the set - unfortunately when my box was delivered my cd player turned up its toes & died on me after many years of long & faithful service.  I now have a new cd player set up & I've had a chance to listen to the whole thing.  I have to report that there are absolutely no technical issues with any of the discs in my set - I've been very lucky I guess.  As expected there's a lot of wonderful music in there.  What has struck me on my first listen is how much better 'First Light' & 'Sunnyvista' sound - I have the ryko cd versions that briefly escaped a few years back & the new versions in the set sound do much better.

Hope that all of you who've had issues with some of the discs sent to you get matters resolved so you can enjoy the set as much as I am!

So far I've listened to Discs 1-7. I had no problems playing the discs in a regular CD player in my car.

Discs 1-6 ripped to iTunes flawlessly. As I typed this earlier, iTunes struggled to import "Back Street Slide," the last song on Disc 7. *Update* - It finally uploaded to iTunes and I'm playing it back now. *2nd Update* - It did not upload cleanly to iTunes; very glitchy with several drop outs. I'll try again, but I'm also going to request a replacement disc as soon as I've tested Disc 8.

A hint, in case you weren't aware of this - if something like this doesn't rip well first time in iTunes, check the 'Use error correction when reading CDs' box.  That worked for me with the couple of tracks that didn't import well first time.

I got my download code and prompt response from Universal about replacement discs (the good news).

The bad news is that nothing happens when I try to input the download code. When I try to type in the code, nothing appears in the text box. I tried it with Google Chrome and MS Edge browsers and experienced the same problem.

Has anyone else been flummoxed by the download? If so, how did you resolve it?

Hmm, nothing here as yet.  Not a total surprise.  The postal service in London has been severely disrupted, just as it was during the first lockdown.

Nor mine and, looking at the Steve Hoffman site, it seems we are not alone.

Still waiting, but my request went in more recently than others', I think. I think I am also dealing with overseas mail, so I wait patiently.

I checked out Steve Hoffman's forum, and a common remark is that people are receiving 2 sets of replacement discs when they thought they had requested only one.

Good for them, but I can't help feeling that sending out all these duplicate sets is delaying my replacements.  :(

Well, well.  Santa has finally decided to brave tier 4 and deliver my replacement discs.  I hope you have got yours too, John.

The amazon price for the box seems to have dropped again. About £79.

Holy cow - my replacement discs arrived today! I requested them on (checks email) November 13.

The CD box was intact and undamaged, but the paper mailing label and insert appear to have passed through an underwater shredder. Someone at the much-maligned United States Postal Service repackaged everything in a sturdy box for the last leg of the journey to me. All's swell that ends swell.

The box is being re-pressed, according to the SDE website...

Just picked up my copy today. I was always interested in it from the start, but hearing all the initial troubles encountered, decided to wait to see what might happen. I'm not entirely sure if I have a repressing or repurposed edition, but all I can say is so far so good. Don't know how anyone else rips CD's these days, but I use an external CD/DVD player which allows me both to rip CD's to Itunes and to play non US DVD's. I only just finished listening to Disc 2. Disc 6, 7 and 8 had some slight lags while ripping, but it will be tomorrow before I get around to playing them. This happens with other discs sometimes too, and normally there is no problem so fingers crossed.

In terms of the set itself, I'm late reporting obviously but I love the organization of tracks and the book itself, though I have only skimmed it. More than that, as many have mentioned here, the sound is superb. I'll only take one track thus far to demonstrate-the released version of Down Where The Drunkards Roll was a revelation. Felt like my first time hearing it, and the chief reason being Simon's dulcimer playing and the timbre of Trevor's voice. Unbelievably fresh sounding and I look forward to the rest of the set in the coming days.
