Title: Caravan
Post by: Bridgwit (Bridget) on August 12, 2019, 12:31:04 AM
Their sound started off badly - Pye’s mike wasn’t on and the bass was swamping everything. But once that was sorted they settled into a most enjoyable, if far too short, set. There were a few glaring omissions but I thought they played well and had the happiest drummer I have ever seen!  Geoffrey Richardson is amazing!!

I want to see them do a full gig now.  :)

Highlight of the festival for me but only because of my history with them. As long as they finished with 9 feet Underground I was happy, but agree with Bridg it was too short and some big omissions  (the dog, the dog...)
. I'd be interested to hear what new listeners thought , and (as I was in the pit), what the general crowd reaction was...

I'm a fan of old. Their music is still redolent of the 1970s for me. Great stuff.

I hadn't seen them live since 1973.

They were good, but really you need to be sitting comfortably in a theater, rather than standing in a field.

I enjoyed them immensely once the sound had been sorted. My companion was less impressed but she had never heard them before and was certainly not a fan of a near-25 minute song to finish what was definitely a set too short on length for me

I've seen them many times in recent years and absolutely love them.

They tend to play plenty from The Land of Grey and Pink - which suits me very well !

New boy (10 years) Mark Walker on drums is brilliant - well they all are.

If only I could get a period grey & pink T shirt..............

First time I have seen them live since 1973 too.

Was disappointed they didn't do "land of grey and Pink". But they were great. Never seen anyone else play amplified Spoons at Cropredy.

Boatboy may have you on that one, for he is King of The Spoons!

Once they sorted the sound out (something a few bands sadly did not do!) I thought they were wonderful - I was not aware of them before they were announced as they were not the sort of music I tend to listen to but my partner loves them so gave me a crash course in Caravan before the festival.

As an aside - I was listening to the album Marque Moon (Television) and my partner said they sounded a bit like Caravan - thoughts?

Can see where you are coming from here although the link is pretty tenuous for me (Marquee Moon is one of my all-time faves)

I didn't know Caravan before, but thought I might enjoy them, and I did.  Nothing ground-breaking for me, but I was very happy to have them there.  And the drummer's excitement at playing was just so infectious!

They were ok.  I don't remember them from their early years (though I had heard of them) so had nothing to measure them against,  except perhaps the odd nod in the direction of Genesis and the Moody Blues.

I wasn't expecting much (I'm more into punk than prog rock...) but I was pleasantly surprised and I enjoyed most of their set, apart from Nine Feet Underground which, for me, went on far too long.

Nooooo! I should be at least twice as long   ;D

I’ve been listening to Caravan all day, they’re very diverse, each line-up offers something different (but like FC I suppose!!)

Nine Feet Underground is what it is. It can't be shortened or lengthened, or speeded up. The highlight of my festival hearing  part of the soundtrack of my youth - just a pity they only had a short set.

And following on from Bridg's point, the composer and keyboardist David Sinclair left very soon after its release, leaving behind him a classic of its time and a timeless classic (yes, that sounds a bit Fairporty...)

The sound was so awful early on I wandered off and looked round the stalls. I'm not really a fan anyhow, but I wanted to see what they could do.

Not their fault. Pye's mike wasn't on and the mix was awful. I was surprised as the sound engineers are usually good, but they let us down this time

Caravan - my favourite of the weekend apart from Fairport and RT.
Didn't expect them to be that good anymore but they are! Big surprise and a nice one.  8)

Pleasant enough, but to be honest, it all sounded the same to me. Perhaps I need to sit down and listen more.
