Title: Great Opening Lines
Post by: SteveZuppa on July 18, 2019, 09:46:53 PM
I'm not sure if I've ever seen this subject addressed on this forum but I'm genuinely interested. Are there any first lines of a song that, by themselves, made you want to hear more? I realize that ,usually, by the time you've made that decision, you've already heard what follows but looking back, have you realized that, hey, that was clever? As an example, my personal all time favorite is by Barry Dransfield on the opening track of "Fiddler's Dream". "You can only hold your breath so long", is, to me, the perfect opening to the rest of the album. What say ye?

One suggested by the above correspondent in a similar thread about intros - which had largely instrumental examples.
It's by Ian Dury and is about a lady from London.

"Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, we're so glad you could attend come inside, come inside" karn evil 9 and in a similar way "sitting on a park bench, eyeing little girls with bad intent" aqualung. Sometimes it's purely the line and others delivery can increase the impact.

Pistol shots ring out in the bar room night, enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall, she sees the bartender in a pool of blood, cries out, "My god they killed them all".
Possibly more than a line but it sure grabbed me.

We relive abridge sails afloat
As to call light the soul shall sing

"Listen as the wind blows
From across the great divide
Voices trapped in yearning
Memories trapped in time

The night is my companion
And solitude my guide
Would I spend forever here
And not be satisfied"

Here I am in your room, going through your stuff,
Said you’d be gone five minutes, that’s long enough...

...is a good attention-catcher from the Maestro himself. Similarly,

Me name is Sam Jones and it’s bones, me occupation,
Chuck yer old hocks out for my consideration.

This thread is great, it gives a reminder of some amazing tracks.

"Sweet dreams

On this Midsummer night
Everyone is sleeping
We go driving into the moonlight"

Here's a few songs I love.

"Sundown dazzling day
Gold through my eyes
But my eyes turned within
Only see
Starless and bible black"

"Sweet Dreams are made of this,
Who am I to disagree?"

"So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell
Blue skies from pain?"

"I'm a little pimp with my hair gassed back
Pair of khaki pants with my shoes shined black"

"Holly came from Miami F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A.
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she"

"Pushing through the market square,
So many mothers sighing
News had just come over,
We had five years left to cry in"

"Good morning little schoolgirl
Can I go home, home with you?"

"Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash"

"Still don't know what I was waitin' for
And my time was runnin' wild
A million dead end streets and
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet"

Lots of Paul Simon: “Hello darkness, my old friend”, “Let us be lovers, we’ll marry our fortunes together”. Joni: “The wind is in from Africa, last night I couldn’t sleep”. (Probably too close for comfort tonight!)

My two favourites: “The screen door slams, Mary’s dress waves. Like a vision she dances across the room as the radio plays etc.” And “On a morning from a Bogart movie, in a country where they turn back time, you go walking through the crowd like Peter Lorre contemplating a crime.”

Mind you that last one brings to mind “You must remember this - a kiss is just a kiss.”

So here we are, with freedom...
Within our sweaty, greedy, grasps
So remember this, boys and girls
When your freedom comes along...
Don’t pish in the water supply
