Title: SWARB! It Suits Him Well - Official Tour
Post by: folkicons on May 11, 2017, 03:26:13 PM
Jill Swarbrick-Banks and Dr. Jason Wilson are very excited to announce:

SWARB! It Suits Him Well - The Official UK Tribute Tour 2018 celebrating the music of England’s finest folk fiddler Dave Swarbrick.

Starring the sensational  Jason Wilson Band (Toronto, Canada), Martin Carthy, John Kirkpatrick & Simon Swarbrick. (plus very special surprise guests at various ports of call)

Swarb didn’t want a funeral and his wishes were honoured, but… he didn’t say anything about a great big wake! So here it is, played by his dearest pals and uniquely his fiddling maestro, protégé nephew.
This is an opportunity for all his friends and fans at last to raise a glass and party in his memory. We will be covering his whole extensive and matchless career; the music will take you through the decades remembering the fun and the brilliance that was Swarb.

I started a thread about the Horsham show when it was first announced here

I won't merge it here as it would appear as the first post in the thread, but will link it to here & lock it.

Does anyone know the whereabouts or (preferably) have a contact email for Kev Boyd, photographer and author of the 'Come Sing It Plain' Martin Carthy fan blog please.
https://carthyonline.wordpress.com/

The Swarb Tribute Tour people would very much like to get in touch with him, and he is quite elusive!  ;D
Thank you

Is it the same person as Kev Boyd the photographer, because he's on Facebook and fairly easy to find.

Shame that the London gig is so small.....

The Ivy House might not be the largest of venues, but Swarb came to play there a few times. Jill approached us saying that she'd love The Goose Is Out to host the gig there, as Swarb had fond memories of the place and the gigs tht we'd given him there, both solo and with Martin C  :)

They seem to be slow off the mark there - their autumn shows only went on sale in September & I thought that might include January. Hey ho, I suspect it might not sell well if they aren't on sale soon.

Still can’t help thinking that there should have been a massive celebration of Swarb’s life at somewhere like the Royal Albert Hall.
If anyone deserved it Swarb did.

Yes perhaps - or the Union Chapel maybe, however, Swarbs' widow Jill approached us (The Goose Is Out!) to hold the London gig at The Ivy House, where Swarb came and played both solo and with Martin Carthy. He enjoyed our nights especially, and we had a good relationship with him, it's particularly meaningful for us as Swarb was our first guest when we started 10 years ago. We are honored and extremely pleased to be hosting this night. :)

My friend Dick and I might go to the gig in Maldon 2 Feb, coming from The Netherlands.
However we'd also like to go and see our mates from The Jigantics in Old, Northamptonshire the day after.
By public transport this is pretty much impossible (it is possible, but takes many hours and would be via London Centre, aargh, won't bother).
Will anyone out there be at the Maldon gig and drive northwestwards, doesn't have to be to Old but roughtly Northampton-bound? And have space for two musicminded Dutchmen? Probably not I know, but cannot hurt trying!  :-\

I’m going to the Swarb gig in Maldon but unfortunately will not be driving anywhere - sorry!  However have you thought about hiring a car?

Well, none of us are drivers. Then it would've been easy  :)
Alternatively maybe is there any local/regional "what's on" for the day after? If we go to the Maldon gig on 2 Feb, we're likely back in NL 4 Feb. So we're looking for some gig 3 Feb, managable from Maldon (and without car. Which probably makes it impossible). Guess Old, Northampton is likely out of the question!

How are you getting to/from Maldon? Presumably by train/bus? From/through London?

Go stay in London on 3rd - can recommend Shake the Chains (google it for musicians/project - its worth catching!)

Via Stansted, apparently 2 easy bus journeys. The 3rd, will keep it in mind, thanks! Though not terribly keen on London ...

The X10 to Chelmsford & the 318 from the bus stop adjacent to Maldon.

Yep, quite easy but not sure of the frequency of the 318.

There appears to be no club meeting on that Saturday & your problem if you don't move accomodation will be getting transport back to Maldon afterwards. Rural Essex buses stop wuite early in the evening.

the sound was bad at ulverston particularly in the first half too me it was is it bad sound or did they just sound bad. John Kirkpatrick was great, as was Carthy as for the Jason Wilson just poor novelty lounge jazz covers and as for the reggae influence no sign of it

Maldon Town Hall, David Hughes opened with a few numbers which put us in the mood and made us smile.  I didn't like it much for the first 3 numbers (oh no thought I, it's far too jazzy), then it kinda grew on me once Carthy and JKP joined in. The evening got better until' My love is like a red red rose'  ::).. Zaynab on percussion was really good and she sang so beautifully. Simon Swarbrick definitely has the family resemblance, enjoyed his playing.  As for Matty Groves and the reggae  ???

I was left pondering as to why the Jason Wilson band led this Swarb tribute and at times saw no connection with Swarb's lifetime's work?
