Title: Jerry Donahue
Post by: quodlibet (Ian) on July 31, 2016, 03:35:05 PM
Just seen this on FB from Kristina Daly (Nee Donahue)

"My dad had a stroke on Friday and is in the hospital. Unfortunately, they missed the three hour window to treat and, due to the location of the blockage, it was too risky to perform surgery. So, they're holding him for now.

I flew out to LA to be with him and, though he is unable to speak, he did recognize me. He's very frustrated, as you can imagine, but we're trying to stay positive.

So thankful to Susan Rey & Frank Badami who saved my dad's life.

More news and information to come. Please keep my dad in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you and love to you all.

Kristina x"

Wishing him well, sending love & good vibes to him & his family.

Actually shocked.

I was thinking how well time was not wearing on him at the New Forest festival. He was in great form there.
I am not a religious man, but I will offer up a prayer tonight.

I'm gutted. Have been rereading our chats on Facebook just now which lead to me booking Fotheringay as a Dutch exclusive for Roots aan de Zaan on 24 September, which happens to be his birthday. I met Jerry before at various Cropredies but if one thing is clear (from real life and these chats) is that you immediately kind of forget his legendary status. He's just a down to earth geezer, very friendly, plays guitar a bit. But his music is in our DNA and has been for decades and his guitar style is unique. But I don't have to tell you that., do I.
The gig we have in our agenda is still some 9 weeks away, and is wholly insignificant now under the circumstances. Whether it happens: I'll go with the flow as in, await what the rest of the band decides to do. In the meantime, I keep all fingers crossed for a recovery in due course.
What a year, folks.

Update from Facebook.

Kristina Donahue Daly with Jerry Donahue.
3 hrs · Los Angeles, CA, United States ·

Hi everyone,

Doc dropped by ICU today and said that dad's vitals look good and he's stable. So, they're moving him out of ICU but will continue to monitor him until CT scan tomorrow.

Dad is really sleepy right now and we're just letting him rest as much as possible.

A few people have asked me where to send cards and we're asking that they be sent to:

Susan Rey Bellas

Thank you all so much for your continued prayers, good thoughts, love & support.

The latest from Kristina...

"Hi all,

Dad spent 2 hours in physical therapy today. They sat him up and got him on his feet. He then sat up on his own for 30 minutes!

He's paralyzed on his right side and is still without speech, but his occupational therapists have said they've seen worse cases fully recover, so that's what we're focusing on!

Dad has got some fight in him and he's very strong. He sometimes resists or retaliates when being asked to move, but he laughs when I say, "Behave!".

We have a long, hard road ahead of us, but we're celebrating the tiny wins. Thank you all so much for the prayers and well wishes! I truly believe they're working. Love to you all.

Update from Facebook. Post-Stroke care is almost always a rollercoaster for all concerned, this is seriously bad news, however.

Susan Rey

Dear Jerry Donahue friends,
We jumped the gun on Jerry's prognosis.
They have found another bleed and we are back to serious situations.
Kristina Donahue Daly and I would like to get him moved to a higher quality care center UCLA, USC, Cedars..you've all said if there anything I can do... well this is it.....if anyone has any direct connections to doctors in those places can you please refer us to them..ASAP
Thank you!

Surprised and disappointed, especially as Fotheringay are rumoured to be hooked for next year.

Ditto.

Jerry used to be a stalwart of Cropredy, and although he was not in the band for long his contribution was significant.
I actually find it hard to believe that Simon at least would not have said anything.

He did at the warm-up on Tuesday, noting that Jerry would be back with Fotheringay at Crops next year, an optimistic hope, unfortunately. However he did confirm that Fotheringay will be on the bill next year. Another source said that PJ will (hopefully temporarily) step up to fill the hole.

Whilst musing about the future of Fotheringay i assumed that, should they carry on, PJ would take over Jerry's duties unless James Burton offers to step in 8)
but who to take over the Trev role, Simon would be a shoe in or maybe Doug Morter.
Wasn't Doug supposed to be in the new line up, originally?

The latest from Kristina Donahue Daly.

Quote
Hi, all. Sorry for the long gap since the last update. I've been putting this off because it's hard, but many have been asking about dad and it's time to let you all know the reality of his situation.

Dad suffered an ischemic stroke with hemorrhagic conversion. Every doctor who's looked at his chart is amazed that he survived. So, for that, we're truly grateful.

However, he has global aphasia, which makes it incredibly difficult to communicate and is, as you can imagine, very frustrating. His occupational therapist said she'd never before worked with someone with his level of aphasia.

He also has right side paralysis and his doctor said he will probably never play the guitar again. This being said, my dad has made progress regaining muscle control on the right side and we are not giving up on him!!

Dad is very strong and stubborn; he can do this! Please continue sending thoughts, prayers, and all the healing vibes his way. To those who have sent cards, thank you!! I know it means so much to him. If you'd like to, you're more than welcome to send videos saying hello, too. He'd love it.

You should also know that he's had a bit of agitation (naturally), but - all things considered - he's in pretty good spirits. He's working hard with speech, occupational, and physical therapy and, though it will be a long road, he's doing fine. Thank you and love to you all.

Kristina xx

P.S. Special thanks to Ron Crowe , Susan Rey , Peter Bellas , and my family for being unbelievably generous with their time and devotion to my dad.

He has some movement now on his right leg and arm even has made several steps walking in therapy sessions..he still has very bad Aphasia but he knows who is there and is trying to communicate very hard and he is aware of what your saying to him and he has great frustration that he can not be understood in his communication as of yet....but he his making better progress in communicating..we and the staff are working with him on many different levels of Therapy...speech. physical, occupational, music as well and he sings and plays around with a mini piano and is doing very well with it...major chords and minors...etc amazing.... actually to see him play with it.. ..
We all know the strength Jerry has as an artist....and we know the man that he is...as I personally see his progress along with his school friend Ron Crowe, and his daughter, Kristina Donahue Daly...I really feel that Jerry will beat most of these battles and I think he will pick up his guitar some day and make it work as best as his body and mind will let him.. which could be so much more than any of us regular players could ever imagine doing...
Thank you all for your love and cards!

We had Fotheringay at Roots aan de Zaan last Saturday (Zaandam, NL). It was a lovely gig, and we started with a tribute to the absent Jerry Donahue - whose birthday it was.
I compiled the iPod pre-show music so, that at around showtime Jerry’s signature tune The Beak/The Claw would play. When the song preceding that was over, I signalled to soundman Paul Smith to give the volume a push.
Then lights out, empty stage, the other Fotheringay members ready at the door – but Jerry played. I think it worked very well. Fab concert, turned out to be Kathryn Roberts' last with them. I wish them well!

Indeed, Kathryn was finding the extra days on the road without her husband/family hard, so she's concentrating on her duo/family.

A friend of Sally's, Debbie, is taking her part. But Sally seemed reluctant to give her surname (I asked her again yesterday). We'll find out in November :-)

Hi all. Sorry it's been so long since the last update. It's been a bit hectic.

Dad's update - He's made a lot of improvement physically; has been regaining muscle control on right side and has been able to walk some pretty great distances with a walker. I couldn't believe it when I saw it; I didn't know if this would ever be possible. Your prayers, well wishes, and good vibes are working!! Thank you!

He's going to need a lot more work mentally, I'm afraid. The hemorrhaging has left a lot of damage and his aphasia is still a big problem. He's also had increased agitation some days, which makes sense really. I can't imagine being in his position.

Anyway, we appreciate your continued thoughts & prayers. Please feel free too to reach out with video messages! He loves those.

Love,
Kristina x

Amazing good news on Jerry Donahue progress not heard as of yet....
Jerry is able to take many many steps walking now with assistance and a special walker....he can now move his right arm all the way up to his shoulder area..."all most".....he is very determined....the most special moment was today.. Freebo F. Freebo and I met up to see Jerry and Freebo put a guitar in Jerry's hands and played the rythmn while Jerry played the chords....it was atonishing.... Jerry is still completely wired musically and he knows us all and responds to memories and jokes....regardless the lack of verbal and communitive abilitiy as of right now....music is the absolute proof that Jerry will come back with Music therapy and stimulations...
I'm not sure insurance will cover this but our brother needs this right now and several times a week.... if you who read this can help in this very needed cause....please help...and P.M. me
thank you all!

Just spotted this update from Susan Rey on fb:

"So many are asking for a Jerry Donahue update...from America and the around the world.

Thank you everyone inquiring about our dear friend Jerry. All and all he is physically improving a lot! His good friend Charlie and I we're visiting at the same time and Jerry wanted to stand up out of his chair to show his improvements...We were nervous about it, but he stood right up out of his chair with both of us at his side and stood tall and proud!

I was so happy for him. He still has a very long road but he is working very hard! I went to one of his occupational therapy sessions and he was working very hard on his right hand and looking at me with...."See what I can do"? I'm so very proud of his determination!

As soon as that thumb is strong...I'm putting his thumb pick on it! Because when I strum a guitar for him as does Freebo F. Freebo...he plays out chords beautifully as only our Jerry does! Yes! Jerry go man go! Keep giving hope! Thank you all for your undying love for our dear friend!"

;D Positive news to start the day!  ;D

update from his daughter Kristina

It's NAMM 2017! I know my dad would have loved to attend this year. Thank you all for the many messages, posts, prayers, and well wishes. I know it means a lot to my dad; it certainly means a lot to me and to my family.
Dad's stroke has left him with many challenges, but he's strong and is receiving excellent therapy.
I'd like to thank Richard Thompson for having a benefit concert in honor of my dad on Dec. 4th, which helped so much with medical expenses and lifted all of our spirits, too! Thank you, Jim Cowan, Nancy Covey, and Lincoln Myerson at McCabe's for arranging this.
Though my dad is unable to read your messages at this time, I know he feels the energy of the love and support you're all sending. Thank you.
Love,
Kristina x

Wonderful piccie of LT and DM with JD.

Fantastic also that RT did a benefit for his occasional 'Sloth' sparring partner.

I know the odds are against him...but they were probably against JD being here at all earlier this year!

I'll be happy for Jerry if he gets enough quality of life back to enjoy being him again.

But, oh, wouldn't be wonderful if, just once more, we could see Jerry with his Telecaster standing up to Richard with his Strat and making 'Sloth' veer through all those tones at Cropredy.

I pretty much despaired when Richard left Fairport; but, when I heard 'Sloth' on 'LIVE CONVENTION', I was wowed. Not only did Fairport now have a guitarist of equalish capability but one who could add his own subtle - and not so subtle! - bends and swerves that evoked both similarity and difference within the the runs and phrases.

A recent update from Kristina Donahue Daly:

Quote
Dad is okay. He's not great... still can't speak. It's unlikely he'll regain speech, as that part of the brain suffered much damage from the hemorrhaging. He also still has a lot of muscle atrophy on the right side (right hand and leg), so playing is challenging without the help of friends to strum for him. He uses a walker with the therapists daily, but hasn't shown a ton of improvement. It's only been a year, though, and they say a lot can happen in the 2nd year. So, that's what we're hoping for.

It was clearly a massive stroke, affecting many areas. I don't want to put a downer on it, but it is such a shame that he has made so little progress/has had limited spontaneous recovery. It's a long haul thereafter.

At least twice per week, I pop in a CD or three featuring Jerry working magic on his guitar, and I spend part of my listening time visualizing JD healing and growing stronger.  I sincerely believe in the power of mass consciousness and encourage others who appreciate this man's music to take a moment to send some healing energy through the universe.  I haven't listened to NINE so often in many years, and I appreciate so much of those songs & tunes anew.  Rising for the Moon gets a lot of plays too -- and recordings of live performances with JD doing wonders on his fretboard.

Reading through this I came up with a couple of ideas..

i) wouldn't it be nice if sometime on Saturday daytime the cameras were turned to the full crowd and the crowd asked to stand and shout out in unison to Jerry... and the video of that could be relayed to him.

ii) somewhere in the field, at the merch stall, or in the ticket tents, there could be message books for signing, where people could give their thoughts, tales, greetings and best wishes to Jerry. Online messages are one thing, but imagine Jerry getting real paper books with thousands of handwritten personal messages - would have to be good for his spirits.

Just a thought...

Nice idea.
Not to put too much of a downer on it, but I wonder, however, how much of his cognitive abilities are intact. It sounds as if the damage is so bad that it is likely he won't be able to read. I remember she said he had global aphasia, which means that his understanding and his speech are very badly affected. (Aphasia in its truest sense means 'no Language'  :'(. Dysphasia is partial loss)

Well the way I see it, if it's done it's done, but if it's not, the chance is lost. Even if it can't be fully appreciated in the near future it will be there for posterity. I'm sure it would also be a great boost for the family, and it would also give his many fans some way of channelling their support and positive energy, for those who are into that kind of thing.

A few years ago, I think it was either Danny Thompson or Jonah  were in hospital, and the whole field sang Happy Birthday into the stage mike. With the miracles of modern technology and the benefit of the UK/California time difference, could the Field be beamed in to him? A suitable phrase, chant or whatever to call his name?

Well, I don't for the life of me know what's complicated about buying a few blank books and pens, getting people to write stuff in them, then posting them off to America. There is an intimacy in the written word on paper that will never be replaced by electronic means IMO - and there would be a special relevance in the fact that the books actually physically came from Cropredy.

Not everyone is, or indeed wants to be, on Facebook.

Re the money, I of course have no doubt at all that Gareth will ensure all the money goes to Jerry. I'd be happy to give some at Cropredy without taking the T-shirt, and maybe others would. So maybe that's the way to do that one.

Anyway, I made my suggestions in good faith, and they're there for anyone to consider in the same spirit. We all have Jerry's best interests at heart.

There are a couple of pieces of video floating about on FB of Jerry & some mates in the health centre in California, looking in good spirits & obviously making progress, if somewhat slowly.  Given the familiy's sensitivity over uploading images of Jerry, I've not posted links, but in the absence of any recent updates I just wanted to keep him in our thoughts. That's good to see.

I'm not a guitarist, so don't know if he is making correct chords on the 'jam'.

He looks happy which is the main thing.

I just noticed that he wasn't always producing the correct chords when named, which seems to indicate his comprehension is poor. Repetitive vocalisation rather than speech, and no movement, it seems, in his right side indicate he had a 'belter' of a stroke. Such a shame. (Sorry, the retired SLT can't help it)

Bittersweet... but ultimately positive! Good to see him playing again - albeit with one hand, but once they got going, it seemed to me that Jerry was watching Freebo and anticipating the chord changes. It's going to be a long hard road, let's hope he can get a good way along it.  :)

Hello All
We have had 2 returns for tomorrow's Jerry Donahue benefit gig in Banbury with The Dylan Project and Fotheringay.
Obviously we want to sell them so please let me know if you can make it and we'll take it from there.
Thank you.
Gareth

In response to a recent request for news updates on the Fairporters FB page...

Susan Rey - "I see him 3 or 4 times a week. We are still working on getting him walking again. it's a long haul but he's in good spirits."

Kristina Donahue Daly - "There aren’t really going to be a lot of updates as things are kinda the way they are in terms of speech and his right hand. We’re just happy he seems rather content. Sue is helping him regain strength and he’s already made a lot of progress in his right leg. Thanks for checking on him!"

More than a few of those ‘names’ could easily have donated £10k individually, and not even have missed it.
Poor show imo.

For all you know they have! This is something Peggy has initiated and this way he gets lots of publicity. Plus someone gets a fabulous guitar.

Depending on the people, it can save a lot of time. (Not these folks!)

Some good news!

"A huge thankyou to the lovely purchaser who paid £22,000 for the Telecaster guitar. Thanks to Houlgate Auctions - Matt Worley, Tony Kelsey, Lars Mullen - JHS for providing the guitar - and all the great guitarists who signed this very special instrument. The display case is made by Rob Conway of RandR Showcase. This sale will really help Jerry and we all send him our love.

Cheers and thanks, Peggy."
