Title: your favorites from the current lineup
Post by: dooovall [Daniel] on October 02, 2012, 05:49:00 AM
Imagine a Fairport set list comprised entirely of material from the oeuvre of the current lineup.  What songs and tunes would you want included?  I'd vote for:

The Heart of the Song
The Good Fortunes
I'm Already There
Over the Falls
The Light of Day
My Love Is In America
The Bowman's Return
South Dakota to Manchester
Edge of the World
Hawkwood's Army
Untouchable
Mercy Bay
Danny Jack's Chase
Danny Jack's Reward
Albert & Ted
Darkside Wood

What am I missing, and what would you omit from the list above?

Some of the best material from the current lineup has been the instrumentals - maybe they could devote a whole section of a show to these ? An unusual idea but not entirely out of the question :

A Year And A Day
The Good Fortunes
Everything But The Skirl
Canny Capers
Some Special Place
The Bowman's Return
Just Dandy
Your Heart And Mine
Danny Jack's Chase
Danny Jack's Reward
Albert & Ted
The Bowman's Retreat
Slipology

Plus their versions of :

Summer In December
The Rosehip
Portmeirion
Brilliancy Medley & Cherokee Shuffle
Royal Seleccion No. 13
The Lark In The Morning Medley from L & L
Dirty Linen
Flatback Capers

(having typed this list, I've just remembered them playing an instrumental medley on the 2010 wintour, but maybe a no-vocals section of the show selected from the above would be a go-er)

I have always thought The Dancer is a very good song.

I'd add:

Wait For The Tide To Come In
The Happy Man
Don't Leave Too Soon
Rocky Road
Wood and the Wire
Rui's Guitar

and drop:

Heart of the Song
The Light Of Day
South Dakota To Manchester
and one of the Danny Jack's

This is the track listing from my in car comp of the Chris Leslie Years (including WKWTTG - so cheating a bit) prior to the release of the Festival Bell -

01 The Wood And The Wire
02 I'm Already There
03 The Bowman's Retreat
04 The Light Of Day
05 Hawkwood's Army
06 My Love Is In America
07 Madeleine
08 Edge Of The World
09 The Bowman's Return
10 Willow Creek
11 John Gaudie
12 Keep On Turning The Wheel
13 Spanish Main

There's only one track on ...Bell I don't really like much, but I guess from that I'd add -

14 Mercy Bay
15 Reunion Hill
16 Celtic Moon

I feel a little like an alien being in this thread.  If somebody want to do a playlist online somewhere and save me the effort I'd be eternally grateful.

I have bought and heard every album Fairport have recorded since 1985 at least once, but only Gladys and JitC get played at all regularly.  All the rest I've passed on to others, and sadly, mostly forgotten.

Enthuse me.  Please.

I wouldn't worry about it David - if you don't like it, you don't. Personally I bought SOO thinking it would be a step up from the hugely promising OTNH and I literally couldn't give it away.

OK, I'll give this a go. It is not my favourite period in the band's recorded history either with the exception of most of the Festival Bell album which I like a great deal and which forms the backbone of this list. When I look at the tracklists of most of the other CDs by the current line up I can't even remember how the songs go. But I do remember and enjoy the following and they would make a perfectly tolerable set list (not necessarily in this order).

The Dancer
Close To You
Portmeirion
The Light Of Day
I Wandered By A Brookside
Wait For The Tide To Come In
The Fossil Hunter
The Bowman’s Return
Edge Of The World
Untouchable
Mercy Bay
Rui’s Guitar
Danny Jack’s Chase
Reunion Hill
Wouldn’t Say No
Albert & Ted
Danny Jack’s Reward
The Festival Bell

If the criteria could be extended by one album, there are a few tracks from Who Knows Where The Time Goes that I would add. On the other hand, I would pay the band never to play The Wood & The Wire, Rocky Road, Keep On Turning The Wheel & Over The Next Hill ever again.

Just to expand on this idea, how about their next album being Expletive Delighted 2 : Son Of Expletive Delighted ?  :)

I'd like to see them do Led Zeppelin 4: Part 2
