Title: Inserting correctly sized images on TAW
Post by: Andy on March 06, 2012, 08:57:09 AM
Colin, as owner of TAW, has asked that we do not directly link to images on other sites (AKA "hotlinks").

So, to attach images to a post, click on "Reply" (don't use the "Quick Reply" box) and then click on the "Additional Options" link bottom left of the text box. You will then be able to choose up to 4 images (.jpg, .gif, .png) by clicking on Attach: choose file. Please note that some text is necessary for the post to be valid.

Cumulatively, your attachments cannot exceed 150 KB (max 80KB ea.), so 1 image of (up to) 80KB, 2 of (up to) 75KB each, 3 of (up to) 50KB, 4 of (up to) 37KB each.

Most digital cameras / camera-phones  take quite large pictures, but to be easily viewed on TAW, images should be no bigger than 550px wide, 650px high.

This inevitably (and cyclically) prompts the question: "how do I resize images for TAW?"

1) There is a FREE downloadable tool called PixResizer - found at http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm It is very straightforward to use.

or

2) If you are using Windows XP, get the FREE "Resizer" Microsoft Powertoy from http://tinyurl.com/2meyw . After installing this you will be able to right-click on a file and resize it appropriately. If you are using other versions of Windows get the tool from http://imageresizer.codeplex.com/

or

3) Download PICASA from http://picasa.google.com/ FREE and use Export Picture To Folder and reduce the dimensions and quality appropriately.

or

4)  Use Photoshop or PS Elements. If you have these tools click on Image > Image size and make appropriate adjustments. Then "Save For Web And Devices" and choose an appropriate size in KB.

I hope this is helpful.

Nice one, Andy.  I'm sure many of us will be using that for reference at some point in the future.

Cumulatively, your attachments cannot exceed 80 KB, so 1 image of (up to) 80KB, 2 of (up to) 40KB each, 3 of (up to) 26KB, 4 of (up to) 20KB each.

I think you're allowed 80KB per attachment, with a maximum of 4, but I'm sure Colin can confirm.

If you have Microsoft Office there are good tools for resizing and compressing pictures included in it. That is all I use for my photos on here. They are only snapshots so quality isn't an issue, and this is a quick and easy way of dealing with them.

No. It is a maximum of 80KB per attachment and up to 4, but the total limit is 100KB.
This limit was chosen and to prevent images being too large and making the whole page scroll horizontally.

I will up the limit to 150KB per post (still 80KB per picture) to avoid having to do multiple posts.

As always the idea is to prevent hot linking and encourage people to just post their best images, rather than linking to all 637 they took this weekend.

Perhaps you can amend the base post, then, Colin, to reflect the change to 150KB
