Title: Wintour 2011
Post by: Chris on July 11, 2010, 12:17:16 PM
Amazingly, I've just come across the first date of the Wintour next year - and they've retired the Spa Centre in Leamington, moving instead to the Assembly (cloer to the rail station) on Wednesday 2 March.

Tickets not yet on sale.....

What's driven that then?

I'll be pleased to have a change of venue though. The Spa centre has its limitations.

Chichester is nearest for us but it's a bit of an arty-farty place. Might make a slightly longer journey to Farnham Maltings (real ale there guaranteed)

The lads have finally given up on Worthing then. I suspect not before time.

Chichester is the only really feasible one for me but I may have to wait until nearer the time before I can really commit.

Worthing or Dorking used to be the nearest to me, but they're not visiting either this time.

Farnham might be worth a visit, never been there before.

We might also need to discover Farnham, as Basingstoke and High Wycombe have been phased out these last couple of years.

Very disappointed that there is no Dumfries show, the last two years at the Theatre Royal have been great shows. Very very few band venture up to SW Scotland or even up to Carlisle. Looks like it will have to be a long drive down to Morecombe.

It's a shame the quaint Dumfries Theatre Royal wont get a visit on the Wintour in 2011. Without the hard work and dedication of the folk who run the theatre, who are all volunteers, it's unlikely there would be a Theatre Royal in Dumfries.

Thanks Dave, I knew I could rely on you to come up with a solution.

Martin is right though, the Theatre Royal is a lovely old, and in March very cold theatre, run by volunteers, shame the boys won't be playing there again next year.

How about a short spring tour, Kendal, Carlisle, Dumfries.  ;)

The easy answer Alan, is because there isn't an audience, also finding the right size venue is a problem.
Another major issue is the parking restrictions and prices adopted in Bournemouth around the main venues like the Pavilion and the BIC. Poole has similar problems where the local council enforces ridiculous car parking charges, even in the winter months when the town is almost deserted. The Bournemouth Pavilion and BIC are both sadly too big for most folk acts, Mr Kyps is ok for small gigs not really suitable for audiences over 200. The Opera House in Southbourne is a nice venue but seems more interested in promoting club nights than putting on gigs, easier I suppose.
There is a folk club in Bournemouth http://www.bournemouthfolkclub.com/ They occasionally put on larger gigs at the Hub in Verwood where Ralph McTell is scheduled to appear later this year.
Wimborne also has a healthy folk music scene, check out Wessex Acoustic http://wimborne-acoustic.co.uk/  They have FC booked for May next year, so it's not all doom and gloom.

Martin, tell me about it!! Lol.  It is a nightmare.  The lighthouse at Poole has a nice small theatre where I have seen some very good jazz bands etc over the years but it probably only holds 200 at a push.  I knew about the folk club and will check out the wimborne acoustic, thanks for that one.

I know 3 daft monkeys are doing kyps in October and i have seen Jackie leven there a few times.  Thanks for the leads

The only place in Leicester that's really an option is the Y Theatre (I don't count the impending joy that is the O2 arena), where I think they've played before but not sure when.  Probably too small for the full tour though at 350 standing, 200-250 seated, but might be ok for the acoustic?

Last time i saw fairports in leics ,i guess 7/8 yrs ago, was at the Octagon theatre in market harborough, attached to Welland Park School. Interesting venue can be seated or all standing, saw Lau here this yr.Possibly Fairports were in the school hall and not the Octagon........  it's all gone very vague.........it's fading....it's fading.....

Good to see they're coming back to Morecambe - note correct spelling!  Shame they're not playing the Great Hall at Lancaster Uni. I've seen Show of Hands there and the acoustics are much better than the Platform. Still, should be a good un and I'm looking forward to seeing Katriona & Jamie supporting them. Last time I saw her was supporting Fairport at the same venue with TTL.

Just seen this from @faircropfest on Twitter:

So. The 2011 Wintour which starts in January. Can anyone guess what is happening in the first half? It's a bit different!

Suggestions on a postcard? For what it's worth mine was:

The band sit and listen whilst the audience plays, and then show how its really done in the second half? Or Babbacombe Lee?

"Dream Song" was a highlight at Cropredy for me this year. Looking forward to it already. Isn't this the first full BL outing since Crop 82? Hoping for "Farewell To a Poor Man's Son" to be included.  :)

FC did indeed 'do' BL on the Friday night at Cropredy '82.  And, I'm pretty certain that was the last time, yes, Ian...

Though I live in Ohio and thus cannot attend the winter tour in person, I hope that perhaps select pieces of music from it will surface on an official live album at some point in the future.  Songs I'd love to see the current lineup dig into: Light of Day & Heart of the Song (both of which they've performed live in the past) plus Sloth.  I really want to hear the current lineup interpret Sloth with no guests.

No fuss, Dave - it's just that, almost out of the blue, people started talking about BL being part of the FC tour.

Well, if the Fairport office put out a teaser to the effect that there's going to be something unusual about the first half of the set on the Winter tour and can anybody guess what it is, then it's hardly surprising that there's speculation about it, is there? It's good PR. I'd be far more inclined to get off my fat arse and go to Colchester to see three quarters of BL than I would all of Sense of Occasion (for example) so it makes good sense to get some speculation going ahead of the box offices opening for business. In short, we didn't start the discussion, they did.

I think Simon's wording from the Cropredy stage when introducing the BL songs was along the lines of them being from a longer suite of songs that may be finding a new home on the winter tour.

Curse this for being the first tour in years when they haven't played in Worthing!

Can't see Swarb being involved though, at least not on a regular basis.

Well... Simon also said during the last wintour that it was an aspiration for the 2011 Cropredy but that aspiration seems to have been brought forward. I think we can take it from his Cropredy stage comment that BL is a pretty safe bet for this year's tour.

Its not unconfirmed, Heather...on Facebook, on Saturday Fairport's Cropredy Convention Official Page (aka the office - presumably Simon or Gareth?) wrote "Good work Fairporters. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album, Fairport will be playing Babbacombe Lee in it's entirety in the first half of their Wintour. The second half will be given over to the new CD (currently being recorded) and other favourites."

Can't wait. Have been doing a bit of revision (well) in advance and it only struck me recently how 'Dream Song' shares a certain vibe with 'Entangled' by Genesis from their A Trick of the Tail. Probably a coincidence.

Is the new album title "The Festival Bell" more or less disappointing than the fact that song will be on it?

I don't mind the song itself but the general descriptions of the album and the emphasis on only playing material from the back catalogue that fits within the (cosy) dynamic of the current line up makes me fear that we will be getting Sense of Occasion 2. I guess we shouldn't pre-judge it though.

Unfortunately with all the 'lets get the potential audience involved from the start and tell them everything about it', we don't really have a choice do we.

I'm afraid I've already decided I won't like it.  I don't want to think that, I just do.  But I'll probably buy it and be disappointed rather than not buying it, so I suppose, ultimately, it doesn't much matter.

I've played Sense of Occasion twice.  Last album I genuinely enjoyed (although it isn't perfect) was Jewel in the Crown over, gulp, 15 years ago.

I'm very much looking forward to the new album. I'll admit I'm growing a little tired of The Festival Bell after hearing it so many times, but with any luck I will probably love the album version as much as I loved the song the first time round. Wouldn't Say No, Rui's Guitar and Danny Jack's Chase are all brilliant and a little more fresh in the repertoire than The Festival Bell and Ukulele Central, so I'm still very much in love with them.

The fact that the lads have had so much studio time shows me we are in for a great album, better than Sense of Occasion anyway.

Do you think the guys have pre-recoreded the narration parts that feature inbetween songs on the Babbacome Lee album to play on stage inbetween the BL songs on the tour? That would be much cooler than them just being introduced normally don't you think?

when they played BL live in 71/72(when they toured it after its release) i seem to remember they had the narration on tape

Perhaps they'll have it in FLAC this time round  :P

and when the "puzzle" of what happened to John Lee was finally solved, I wrote a verse - in what I hoped was the same (or at least similar) style as Swarb used on the album - to finish off the story & sent it to the guys putting on the stage show - they didn't use it. It's probably still on this board somewhere...

Found it...

A final coda to "The Cell Song", to follow "The Hanging Song":

"Now I lie dying in my bed, but I'm thankful for my life;
the sixty years the good Lord gave to me.
Farewell to dear old Devon, farewell my darling wife"...
The final heartfelt words of old John Lee.

I like The Festival Bell. It's a good old-fashioned story song, .

It always reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies theme. Don't know why. "So they loaded up the truck and moved to Cropredy". Yeah, that's the one.

Now then, who's going to volunteer to be Granma sat in the rocking chair on top of the truck? (Anji, save a space in your diary...... :o) I'll drive, MikeB can play the Banjo........ ::)

Anyone planning on Lougborough take note:  Their webiste is up the spout and the Box Office consists of one rather frazzled lady in what sounds like a very noisy office.  Practice your phonetic alphabet, you will be spelling everything out.  Possibly several times.

Ahem  ::) The phonetic alphabet is all very well - until you encounter someone who thinks Quebec is spelled with a "K".  8) Coat (and scarf and gloves) on. Major topic drift and all that.  ::)

Ticket booked for Birmingham. Front row of the stalls rather than back row of the circle, trading vertigo for neck ache.

I expect it will again take an age to get out of Birmingham, so anybody fancy a post-gig meal somewhere afterwards?

Finally got around to booking for the Union Chapel. The ticketing isn't designed for parties who may not all arrive together - one ticket covers all 4 of us, so perhaps it is lucky that this year there won't be a pewfull of us all trying to arrive together. I would love to know how they can justify a 10% booking fee per ticket for sending one email and transferring some money around.

At least if we go to the Acoustic tour we can wander into the Bloomsbury and negotiate face to face.

Just received an email newsletter from The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury - tonight's gig is SOLD OUT.

Looking forward to hearing "John Lee, the jury has found you guilty of wilful murder...."

Today is going to drag.

I can't believe it was 40 years ago I bought the JBL LP on the day it arrived in my local record shop...  :o
