Title: Cropredy Photos
Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on August 14, 2005, 08:43:16 AM
Please put any photos from Cropredy in this topic. (Modem users beware)

This is really for sets of a few snaps, where you where you also want to add some text. Larger collections of photos should go in the gallery and be linked from 'Cropredy Reports'.

Some more up now in my gallery.  Apologies in advance for those that are slightly pixelated - I had to do a lot of resizing to get them to fit.  Full-sized (clearer) versions are available on request.

The eagle-eyed among you will spot only one or two Fairport pictures and no Dylan Project or Richard Thompson pics.  That's because I haven't decided which ones to put up yet.

Rumour has it that Corpulent William is not as well-blessed in the flesh department as he would have me believe.

Is so-called Fat Billy as wobbly as he makes out? Does anyone have any photographic evidence of his Body Fat Ratio?

Sir Bob sir,
myself, Gower Flower and others can bear witness to William's lack of corpulence :o
We, with others, spent much valuable drinking time trying to persuade said Billy to provide
a more accurate avatar. His present avatar, we feel, is breaking all trade's description rules
on accuracy of description.
I feel I can speak for all those who expressed concern/confusion, when I say that we would welcome your invaluable support and advice in this travesty of description.

Thank you Sir,

Mic - truth will out ;D ;D ;D

Indeed, as an explanation to your post...

Quote

Indeed again. I like Andy's photos a lot.

If you read back up the thread, you'll see that my first comment about photos of people's backs was made in reference to a different (pro) photographer, who featured them rather heavily on his website. Hence the smilie when I repeated the 'advice' in response to Andy's call for constructive criticism. The only photographs that I criticised were those of that McNairn.com pro guy.

Quote
And as for peoples' backs not making good photos, well this may not be a great photo, but how does it make you feel?

It's a moody shot, made as much by the face as well as the back. Either on their own wouldn't be as good a shot.

Perhaps he is a disgruntled member of "that other place" who has turned to stalking this board's members - there do seem to be an unusually high proportion of photos featuring august (and otherwise) members of this institution. :o

Good point Tasha, htis did cross my mind.  Personally I'm not that bothered by somebody putting up a photo of me on the 'net.
What would bother me is if that the image was then used to make money. (Not that anybody in their right mind would buy a photo my  ugly mug!) without asking permission.

Thats a different matter.

The Nanny state discourages all photography of children other than at private (i.e. at home) functions because obviously if you want to record your little one's performances in School plays and the like you MUST be a paedophile.

Absolute cobblers, of course.

There's a big debate in a few photography magazines at the moment about the "effects" of showing people in photographs.  It's very strict in London in particular - I'd have to get the magazines out for more information.

Anyway, none of my pictures of Talkawhile members are for sale.  If anybody wants me to remove their face from my gallery then please let me know and I will do so.

I have just found this info:
You can't make a profit from a picture of an individual "man off the street"
without the written permission of the sujbect in the form of a signed model release.Iif you don't have this  you would be breaking the law. If pictures are used in a way the subject is unhappy with the subject can sue. :o

Don't think it's breaking any law, but yes, the individual photographed does have rights for which compensation can be requested (in a civil court, if necessary) if the photographer makes money from a photo with them as the subject without written permission.

If it just appears on a website without your permission, you can insist that it be taken down if you so wish. There would be no compensation (assuming it's just a shot in a crowd like these are, and nothing more incriminating)

That is not correct. It is good practice for photographers to get signed permission from a subject for use when they take the shot. They should also make it clear what the photos is likely to be used for. I have a standard form I use all the time. But it is not a legal requirement. There has been a recent case in the West Country where a photo of a member of the public was used initially for a tourist brochure and then on train station posters. She complained (and was interviewed on Radio 4). The company removed the posters out of good will (and presumably bad publicity) but they were not legally obliged to do so.
If you couldn't sell photos without the permission of everybody in them you'd never get any crowd shots!

A lot of concert / festival tickets do have a term in the T&C's that advise of you being filmed / pgotographed & advisde that purchase of said ticket means you deem to give your consent.

Title: Re: Cropredy Photos

There is no legal redress if you are snapped in public. Some parts of the country frown upon pictures of children being taken - but again, if they're not in/on private premises, there's no legal problem.

I tend not to do lots of pictures of kids because a) misunderstandings do arise and b) I find adults more characterfull.

Several professional photographic mags are debating this right now because the Mayor of London has proposed making the taking of pictures on the streets of LOndon illegal. Total bosh and unworkable. Did you know that it's illegal to use a tripod in the bounds of the City of London already? You can use a monopod, however.

Apologies for this being slightly off-topic, but I wasn't sure where to put this request.  (If any of the moderators want to move it to a more suitable area, please feel free)

This is probably only aimed at those of you who were/are members of the FC list, for reasons that will become apparent.

If anyone has photos of Steve Burgess (aka Budgie), please would you email them to me.  Those of you who know Budgie, should know why, but if not, I'll explain privately. If you're not sure if you know him, a photo of him can be found at: http://www.mcvax.org/jhma/fairport/cropredy2004/crop2004-Pages/Image166.html which was taken at Cropredy 2004.

Sorry for the interruption.

included are some shots from the stage which include a few audience shots, you might be in there?

Of course, if anyone would like to buy approximately 274 photos selected from previous years Cropredys for a mere £15 which includes a donation to the Teenage Cancer Trust,  please visit my website and order from there, or there are some shops listed  which still have a few copies.

I'm delighted to be able to say that my book 'Festival Folk' sold very well at Cropredy, but there are still copies left from the limited print run of 1500. I have absolutely no intention of re-printing, so these will be (hopefully!) treasured collectors items one day !! Please buy now while you still can !!!

"Festival Folk" is absolutely BRILL. Well done Joss. And all for charity too - bought mine on Sat.

Could something charitably similar be done with older photos from Cropredy? You must all have BILLIONS. For instance I took quite a few slides at "Farewell Farewell Fairport" in 1979, and several in subsequent years - notably a murky but at the same time revealing  :o shot of Professor Bruce Lacey and partner in 1982 (if you were there you'll remember, Ohmigawd). And one of Linda Thompson - rare or what?

And others must have lots of shots of audience and bands - what for instance about Don "the Indian" at the bar? Roy Wood's big band with the ladies in hot pants (ooer)? Muzsikas? Filarfolket? Heather Wood? Peggy's various beards? Simon without one?

I know the objection to using old slides was that one's irreplaceable shots would disappear or be crunched but one can now either scan 'em oneself or get a competent processor to do it, then they could go onto CD-ROM.

Maybe I should have IM'ed Joss? Has anybody any experience in book publishing?

Cheers - Ed

Now that I've published my first book I'm looking forward to my next, I have the ISBN number already!!   Although I think I have enough photos to choose from for Vol 2, certainly your idea of gathering up other people's vintage photos is a good one and I have been thinking about this.  Watch this space !!

Can anyone tell me why I am unable to see any of the photos posted in this thread?  ???

I'm guessing there is a setting somewhere that I need to change but can't figure out what.

Thanks
phil

Hi Folks!

I've been enjoying everyone's Croppers pics, they make me feel I've been there vicariously!   ;)

Did anyone get any shots of the Hamsters playing, by any chance?  My friend is a fan and I'd like to show him what he missed!

Wish I could have been with you all.  Ah... maybe next year... :)

Only the one I'm afraid, and not particularly great, if you want a full resolution copy IM me.

And for any midlands based fans, they're playing the Musician in Leicester next Sunday  ;D

No, but I always fancied it, the drama, the high expectation, Rumpole, meticulously tekin the opposition to the cleaners, turnin to an un-supposin member of the court and sayin In fact it was you David Hughes that wrote Smack up my Bitch wasn't it? (sharp intakes of breath from the folky camp) and such like.

Yes, all but a dream.......

Right then I have had to undergo a complex process involving taking my films (You remember them don't you) to a shop to have them processed and then scan them in on one computer and transfer them via Floppy disc to this one (The 21st century has only partly reached the house of Volt but Hey Ho let's go.
I call the first one 'Elegance personified under difficult conditions' (With several dodgy characters in the background)

The latest issue of Amateur Photographer (cover date 3 September 2005 but is on sale now) has a road test of two cameras and the test was undertaken at Cropredy a couple of weekends ago.  Pictures of Richard Thompson, Chris Leslie and Julie Matthews feature prominently.
