Hi Jude

I know it's a tad off topic, but would it be best from your point of view if greyhound racing were banned?

I guess you've thought about this a lot - I'm interested because GIN are connected to, amongst other things, the British Greyhound Racing Board and the National Greyhound Racing Club, which must be a bit of a double-edged sword.

Cheers

Keith

Title: Re: Fairportfolio
Post by: jude on May 23, 2005, 11:16:38 PM
The retired Greyhound trust are the ones connected to the Racing side.

GIN is a Charity set up originally to help the greyhounds and galgos of Spain and other countries. When dogs are retired from actual Stadium racing they are often sold abroad to become hunting dogs. When the hunting season is over the dogs are left to fend for themselves in caves or thrown down wells or hung from trees. Sorry to be graphic but that is what happens.  GIN rescues them cares for them and rehomes them all over the world while trying to persuade the hunters to change their behaviour.

I don't have a problem with Greyhounds racing. It is after all what they love to do and there is no more beautiful sight than a greyhound in full flight. I have a problem with unscrupulous owners, trainers and syndicates who don't see to the welfare and rehoming of their dogs once their racing days are over.

They are just such trusting animals who run their hearts out so that people can make money out of them and they should be treated with care and love, but often are not. I do believe that the Racehorse industry has its own fair share of mistreatment as well but I live in hope that the Greyhound Trust will at least go some way to helping to retrain owners and trainers .

This all may sound a bit waffly but I know what I mean and if I could cope with more than one greyhound. I would have a whole houseful. It is just the RA which is preventing me from doing so.

Hello Jude

I was once told that it was inadvisable to take on a greyhound if you have cats. Is this correct? I can imagine - giving their chasing and racing tendencies - that it might well be.

I would love to give a home to a retired greyhound, but I have two cats at present.  Maybe one day.

I remember going to Newquay in Cornwall a few years ago and frequenting a jazz bar there (cant remember its name but i do remember thousands of monkey nut shells all over the floor ) and they had a retired greyhound who the owners rescued and it was the coolest dog ever. He was always lying across the bench seats in the pub and people would have to shift in their seats if he decided to have a stretch it really was hysterical to watch.

I have an ex-racing greyhound/lurcher cross and he lives quite happily with my cat.

Most greyhounds in need of a loving home have been tested to see if they are cat friendly.   You will be told at the outset if a dog is not suitable to live with a cat or in fact another breed of dog.

Obviously it is advisable to keep the dog muzzled on introducing to a cat and in fact we did this for a week until we were certain that he wasn't interested in chasing the cat.  He's received a couple of clips round the nose from the cat and very much knows who is in charge round here :-)

Search for Greyhound Rescue South West as a starting point - and check out rehoming.  You'll get the lowdown on dogs looking for homes at the moment.

we have a place near us that rehomes racing greyhounds a pal of mine has 3 of them, one has 3 legs and will perch his back end on your knee while you scratch his bum, which is a bit weird and one of the other likes to watch a video of him racing (sadley he did'nt win) they are all pretty well adjusted gogs who share the place with two cats two sheep and a dozen chickens. they have six dogs and only one of them can jump the gate, but when he comes back the others beat him up cos it seems that no one likes a smart arse.

All lovely stories- what a giggle dogs are eh?

Leahdon, Fairportfolio was written by Kingsley Abbot, a friend of Fairport before they were Fairport so it is about the early days of the band. It is a very truthful depiction of what was what and where was who and I often check it out when trying to remember what I did in those days. Only £6.50 inc p.p nearly all of which goes to Greyhounds in Need. A vital document if you want to know about the early days

Fairpotfolio arrived virtually by return!

In an unreliable world these little things raise the spirits, thanks Jude.

Like Sian I'd intended to read it when work was lighter but keep dipping in.

I've hidden it from Mrs Woodpecker and the Lesser Woodpecker until I've finished - they might get a look before Cropredy!

Talkawhile, Fairport, Cropredy and Folk folk generally refresh my views of human nature - and the day job means they certainly need regular refreshment!  (both senses of the word!)

I'm going to blatantly plug this again

"FAIRPORTFOLIO" by Kingsley Abbott

His memories of the earliest days of Fairport with pictures and photos and maps and information and I-don't-know-what-not.

And what's more it is totally accurate (as vouched for by me who was there) (not good grammar :o)

The cost is a mere £5.00 + £1.50p/p and the £5.00 goes to Greyhounds In Need.

AND WHAT'S MORE I will sign each copy but only if you want me to.

IM me for details how and where

Hi Jude,
I got my book. I can't wait to read it. And I saw another article on Greyhounds.  It is about a local "Greyhound underground railroad" and the article aslo mentions that the 1st  greyhound track  in the usa was in Emeryville, ca in 1919. I am in Berkeley next to Emeryville, so it tickled me.  Hope all is well.  Michael

Well, there was a 70s TV series called "Cheap at half the price", and I'm pretty sure that "Dear at half the price" was often said by Pertwee in The Navy Lark (a popular radio series).  Neither of these of course are applicable in this case.
http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-che1.htm indicates that "cheap at twice the price" may have been a street trader's cry.

actually. the quote referred to my dearly beloved but often quite bonkers late husband Simon, who would use it frequently while selling his cassette duplicating services to customers. I always cringed when he said it, but 99% of the time he got the job.

Sorry off topic, I know but it's my topic so I don't mind..................

I got mine and am enjoying it immensly.  I keep running across names of other bands that I didn't know interacted with Fairport. In one review , there is a mention of Simon Dupree.  I am assuming that it was Derek Schulman of Gentle Giant ( fame?) . Also the mention of playing with Pink Floyd.  I am still at the beginning. I didn't even know Hendrix jammed with FC. Some of the early photos are just incredible.  I also didn't know Joe Boyd managed Floyd??!!!! And a mention of aurthur brown. I wonder if it is the same one I am thinking of.    "Fire" was his hit. Very weird stuff. So many good bands played in a small area. London in the 60's sounds almost magical.     It sounds like a nice close knit neighborhood.  I can't wait to read more.   I find it interesting that the mentions of the west coast influences.(being from the west coast, I am a 5th generation SF ian)   But no beatle mentions.  Surely , they must have had a bit of a influence.  Also, I was suprised by some other quick mentions in the book.  Thanks Jude.  It is wonderful.  And I am sure the greyhounds thank you as well.  I'm sending off the photo and articles tomorrow.   Hope all is well.   Michael, Mindwarper, Nunchal Naomi  :)

I feel it is important to recognise new, fertile commercial movements in Western Liberal Democracy, and, in this very aforementioned spirit I feel it necessary to highlight the competition being offered to Amazon.com by the very excellent Jude's sales of Fairportfolio. Jeff Bezos be warned. This radical exercise in hip capitalism has astounded the international press (well there was a mention on the Fairport chat page - ed) and the sight of thousands of happy greyhounds larging it (come se dice) in a manor house somewhere in the Oxfordshire countryside is one to cherish in my dotage.

Now do you stock Geoff Dyer's books Ms Dyble?

Hope nobody minds if I bring this thread kicking and screaming up to date.

As there are a lot of fabulous new members perhaps some of you would like a copy of this fascinating bit of Fairport history written by Kingsley Abbott about the very early days of Fairport.

I have 13 copies left and I think that these are the last I can get hold of.

With Kingsley's permission I am selling them for £5.00 plus £1.50 postage /packing.

I will sign the copies if you like and the £5.00 will go to Greyhounds In Need.

So if you would like to find out about (some of) what I got up to in my youth with the folk-rock legends of today please IM me and I'll tell you how you can buy one (book not greyhound!)
