The guitar that features on the cover of the Red And Gold album is up for sale on eBay.

"Highly collectable, Epiphone 295 acoustic Guitar as used for the cover of the Fairport Convention Red and Gold album sleeve. original artwork by Dave Gleeson. Never been gigged but has been used on several recordings. In excellent condition and easily authenticated."

It's not me that's got it for sale but Spencer Richards, who used to have the George in Barford Saint Michael when Dave Pegg and I used to live there. Dave Gleeson is becoming quite collectable in is own right these days as an artist. How many noticed the red and gold string on the guitar on the album cover?

As you can see from this photo, both the guitar and I were younger in those days. This pic was taken in the back garden of the George in Barford Saint Michael by John Woodward.

It's a long time since I've played it (as you can see from the photo) but I remember it being very easy to play and in tune with a nice neck. I also remember thinking that it needed slightly heavier strings on it to get the best out of it.

OOOOOhh Noooooo!!!!  When Dennis sees this he will go bananas :o  Maart, you may have vague recollections of a young 11 year old lad pestering the life out of all you chaps at Cropredy last year !!...My son Dennis.  You signed his FC songbook for him that I bought him as an early birthday present.  He got an electric guitar for his birthday, that he's doing very well on, but now desperately wants an acoustic. Boyfriend is in the process of rebuilding an old acoustic we payed a fiver for at a boot fair which sounds good, but I know he will still want this one. He's been saving pocket money, birthday and Christmas money for a decent full size violin as he's grown out of his old one, but feel that may be forgotten ::)

By the way, he's doing very well working his way through the songbook. Portmeirion and Rosemary's Sister on the violin and Hiring Fair, Matty Groves on guitar.

It's now up to £82.  Now we're starting to get somewhere.  She looks a lovely instrument.  Shame I've just bought one......

I think somebody has probably put quite a high bid in. I made the bid of £80 to see what would happen, and I was immediately overbid. I suspect that the same thing might happen if I put in a higher bid.

Apparantly I have to decorate the playroom, and put up guitar hangers before I am allowed to buy another guitar :(

Don't think so Tony,  he's now decided to spend the money saved for the violin on bidding for this guitar and he says he will have  a new full size violin for his birthday ::)  He bid all of his saved money, plus £20 from me and managed to remain the highest bidder for a whole day ;D Sadly he was knocked off this morning :'(

You obviously have the right management. However, a word of warning. When quite young and while I was away touring, one of my kids very excitedly was jumping aroung the room, as they do. The Rob Armstrong acoustic bass (see website for details) flew from the guitar holder on the wall and broke its neck on the kitchen table. Luckily it was taken with loving care to its dad who fixed it before I knew anything about it. And watch out for the dreaded central heating...

The son and heir is now a bass player in his own right, so not too many problems there. He may even buy an acoustic bass. He's just bought a silver Ashdown bass stack, and is like a dog with two tails.

The central heating does concern me. There is one plain wall that is well away from the radiator, so I think I will hang the guitars on that. I always tend to leave a guitar out on a tripod stand anyway, so hangers shouldn't be much different from this.

Mine are always stored in their cases and inspected once a month if they're not out working. I once left the Andy Viccars electric bouzouki in the case unsupervised for 18 months and the foam in the flightcase reacted with the back of the neck. Took some extra TLC to make it feel better again. (When are we going to see some other than nurse smileys? They don't wear these caps anymore)

Always be careful what you wish for  ;)

I have a few guitars and I left one of them in the basement for a few years only to find the cheap case covered with mildew.  Eegads!!  Luckily, the guitar came away unscathed and I immediately went out and purchased a $125 hardshell case.  Nothing's getting in that baby!

The moral of your story:  Play your guitars on a regular basis and don't let them get moldy.

How true. If you're not playing an instrument for a long while then maybe it would be better off with someone else who would love it more.
