Title: City of Manchester
Post by: John Beresford on January 15, 2005, 08:36:43 PM
Hello Maart - thanks for your enthusiastic and entertaining responses.  A couple of things have been puzzling me...

What's a nice boy from Middleton doing supporting Man U?  I thought all true Mancunians were City fans?

In the very early days Manchester United was the Catholic team and City the protestant team. I was brought up Catholic till the nuns and monks beat it out of me...

Hopwood, eh?  I was at the Salesian school in Notlob.

My second puzzle - where did the extra 'a' come from?

Not Hopwood but the school across the way on Rochdale Road.

The extra a I'm going to start a new thread with.

I know the school you mean, Maart.  Cardinal Langley.  ;)

By the way, John.  I went to your old school to watch a rugby match recently.  My son was playing against them.  My brother came too - he had been to a Salesian College, not in Notlob, but in Oxford.  After 20 minutes a ginger-haired Salesian youth walked off with his shoulder dislocated.  He beckoned to me to take hold of his arm.  He pulled and twisted until there was an almighty crack and his shoulder returned to its rightful position.  He then strolled back onto the pitch and took his position in the line-up.  That's what nuns and priests do for you! Never did us any harm.  If it weren't for Sister Winifred, I would never have been Irish Dancing Champion 1966 and the footballer I am today. 8)

Hands up time. I'm ex-Salesian too - this time Farnborough Hants.
