Title: Job Centre
Post by: Shane (Skirky) on January 06, 2005, 07:44:16 PM
Hi Maart, thanks for a top-notch Talkawhile.
How do you get work (this isn't supposed to sound like that) - is it personal recommendations, the grapevine, a macchiavellian agent? ;)
And how do you decide which projects to take on?
Is there anything you've been offered but have had to regretfully decline?
Cheers
Shane

Beats me how I get work. I must be doing something right...

I have a very eclectic taste in music as Jan would tell you, so I'm up for everything. Two gigs I'd turn down: Eric Delaney and Van Morrison. I think I'd rather be room service. I'd probably be treated better...

I get recommended sometimes, as in the Yusuf Islam thing. Sir Danny Thompson recommended me for that but then I've recommended him for things too. Us bass players have to stick together...

Sometimes it comes from a social thing, like Blue Tapestry or Miranda Sykes Band. Some gigs grow out of others, like Beth Nielsen Chapman. I'd recorded for producer Paul Samwell Smith on other albums. We got on, he liked my bass playing, I got the gig. Us bass players have to stick together...

Likewise with Fairport. I'd got to know Dave Pegg over the years and when FC came back together he asked me to join. Us bass players have to stick together...

After having recorded Beverley Craven's demos, I was in USA with Jethro Tull when she got the deal to record the rest of the first album. Luckily, my bass parts for Promise Me and another song were kept, but someone else did the rest of the album. Which was MY JOB!!! >:(

You win some, you lose some...
