Radio Three, Radio Four, Classic FM 2. What two live acts were the best you'd seen in 2004? David Hughes While & Matthews 3. What Sunday paper do you read, if any? None 4. How did you first get into (a) Fairport A friend dragged me along to see them at Greenwich Borough Hall on the assurance that "they are just like Steeleye" Tickets were 50p. It was the "Live Convention" line-up with Sandy. I hated it. (Obviously I changed my mind later) (b) Cropredy Was there in 1979 for the farewell and went back every year until 2002 when I realised that I didn't like the festival any more for reasons that we have discussed in other places on the board. I have no inclination to go to another one. 5. What was the last CD you bought? Spires & Boden - "Through & Through": totally superb ;D 6. What woman, apart from yours truly, should be given the job of managing the England football team? Anna Ryder Title: Re: Let's talk Music, Personal Taste and other stuff like that Post by: Nick on October 10, 2004, 12:24:30 AM Colin, Lord David of Essex, and the other Mods - give us a flavour of your musical tastes by answering the following: 1. What radio station do you listen to the most? 2. What two live acts were the best you'd seen in 2004? 3. What Sunday paper do you read, if any? 4. How did you first get into (a) Fairport (b) Cropredy 5. What was the last CD you bought? 6. What woman, apart from yours truly, should be given the job of managing the England football team? Karen Ooh, erm, ah, erm, lets see... 1. Mornings, Radio 4. Late afternoons/evenings, Radio 2. Other times BBC 6 Music. I would listen to 6 more but I don't have digital radio in the car. 2. Best, by a country mile, Bellowhead. They're touring next year. Go see them!!! Second Best, ooh that's difficult. I enjoyed Black Nielson's gig last night so I'll say them as they're fresh in my memory. If I have to think about that then I'll never choose. 3. I read news on Yahoo. The only papers I read are Private Eye and Big Issue which are both weeklys. 4. a. First see 'b' below: then as a student I saw a poster advertising 'Fairport Convention, featuring Dave Pegg from Jethro Tull' and thought I like Tull, lets check them out finally. 4. b. My Brother went to Cropredy in the mid Eighties. I was only interested in Rock at that stage so I declined the offer. He went the next year, by which time I was into Tull and Richard Thompson and had heard of this Fairport lot but that coincided with Queen playing at Knebworth. So I went to see Freddie et al instead. I made it the third time, by which time I knew all about Fairport etc as part of the Island cannon (from RT through Nick Drake and John Martyn - it was all falling into place.) 5. Rachel Goswell, Waves Are Universal. Ben Christophers, The Spaces In Between. Sandy & Trevor, Attic Tracks 1972-1984. (I had an Amazon session.) 6. My best friend. She's a mum of 2, recently earned a PhD, holds down two extremely senior roles in the oncology pharmacy sphere, sits on two different major oncology pharmacy committees, presents papers on the subject at international symposiums and still has time to attend the Sidmouth festival each year. Managing a football team should be a breeze! Cheers Nick Title: Re: Let's talk Music, Personal Taste and other stuff like that Post by: mikec on October 10, 2004, 12:33:23 AM Oh go on then ;)

Quote What woman, apart from yours truly, should be given the job of managing the England football team? Me. I am really good at managing men. Could it not be opened up to us mere-mortal-non-mod types ;) Cheers, Chris Colin says: It's Karen topic, so we should let her start it elsewhere (after we've finished here). Maybe it's on-topic enough for the Fairport section. Title: Re: Let's talk Music, Personal Taste and other stuff like that Post by: Folkie (Jen) on October 11, 2004, 06:06:13 PM Right, here we go....
1. What radio station do you listen to the most? BBC 2 radio 2. What two live acts were the best you'd seen in 2004? Fairport and Simon Care Trio/John Tams 3. What Sunday paper do you read, if any? ehmm..... the one we should get every Sunday..... 4. How did you first get into (a) Fairport (b) Cropredy Ok.... I first went to Cropredy when I was about 2. But of cousre, I did not know what it was about then.... All I remember is that I absolutely loved being in that field every August. But I would say it really started when I first went on the school exchange. I met this boy who was wearing a Cropredy t-shirt and I started talking to him. He said how wonderful so-and-so's singing/fiddling/drumming etc was and I just had no idea who he was talking about. So by the time I went on the exchange in my second year I had learned most of their songs and got familiar with the names and faces related to Fairport. And then we have met up at Cropredy ever since. 5. What was the last CD you bought? OTNH 6. What woman, apart from yours truly, should be given the job of managing the England football team? ?????? How did you first get into (a) Fairport (b) Cropredy 5. What was the last CD you bought? 6. What woman, apart from yours truly, should be given the job of managing the England football team? Karen First off, I ain't no moderator - I'm too young, too wild, too free...and I wasn't very good at it :-[ But I do like opening me yap! :o 1) Talk Sport - like 5Live but populated by the inarticulate (MY people) & The Archers (R4) 2) David Hughes at the Banbury album launch & Family Mahone (more fun than fun-time in Fun-ville during Fun-week) 3) Totally promiscuous - or used to be. Since the puppy arrived I just buy ALL the ones that provide a lot of paper...though I only read the football pages and attempt the crosswords. 4) Got into Fairport via Tull. The day FC disbanded they also played Knebworth - Pegg was interviewed on Radio I about his new job (it was news in thiose days). Bought a few albums. Played "Farewell, Farewell' every day for a year and went to the first reunion in 1980. Tickets were cardboard and cost £3.50. Don't know about the beer I was only just turned fifteen and a novice to the ale-world...have tried some now though :) 5) Can't remember - tend to do a lot of bootleg-swapping :-[ (Not Taiwanese copies of "Wood & The Wire' but "live concert material' ).... But could have been "Over The Next Hill'...No it wasn't!! Swarb's "It Suits Me Well' - truly magnificent....I'm a fan of his you know :) 6) You can't have a chick managing a football team. It's not right! And may even be illegal ??? Same goes for commentators, officials or reporters. The concept of them playing is amusing though :)...And they make nice teas :) Title: Re: Let's talk Music, Personal Taste and other stuff like that Post by: Pugwash on October 12, 2004, 07:33:04 PM I'm only a mini-mod can't remember what for now Pirate activities???

1. Radio 2, Magic FM and Essex Radio 2.Family Mahone at Croppers Oyster Band at Bush Hall, London (Big Session) 3. None, it's all repeated on Monday's! Also can't stand the weight of the magazines! 4. I had never heard of them until I met a man who owned Leige and Lief on vinyl of course and it just blew my mind (I've just recently bought it on CD) 5. Interest in canals and Civil War sights that first brought me to Cropredy. Our first year, we went the weeked after (can you believe that!) We wanted to visit Cropredy Bridge and the church and find out more about the battle (anoraks!!!) and a little old lady in the church asked us if we had been there for 'the Fairports' as she put it, I can remember to this day a sun hat with Fairport Convention on it lying in the church porch! We found out more and have been going now for about 10 years. 6. Big Session, (Oyster Band, Show of Hands, June Tabor, Jim Moray, Eliza Carthy etc.) 7. Nancy Delolioooooooo .cos she does a great job already!!! ;) This is the voting completed from JJ |
