Title: Bargain Bin
Post by: Will S on November 03, 2024, 05:03:14 PM

Leeds
He's there most Fridays and Saturdays.
I've had some bargains off him over the years.
A couple of months ago I got the latest Neil Young Archives cd set (Freedom,Ragged Glory,Weld and Arc)
Still sealed £15!!

I think this guy does Tod market on a Thursday as well.  Basically, a well known reviewer dumps all his stuff with the seller, and the seller clearly a) hasn't a clue or b) is a lovely generous guy...

Hmm. I suspect petrol costs (other forms of transport are available...) would wipe out any savings for me.

In the 1990s I used to pick up books at Spitalfields Market for dirt cheap prices, including a complete set of P.G. Wodehouse for a tenner.

Those books came from reviewers at a prominent newspaper. God knows what they reviewed because even the newest books were untouched. The stallholder paid them by weight.

Bargain of the century.  Amazon but not THAT much more elsewhere.  17 CDs, 1 DVD.  Some of the best bonkers music in the universe.  I thought it was a bargain at twice the price

Any Police fans here?  Thanks to a tipoff on SDE, I bought the 2024 2CD reissue of "Synchronicity" from Amazon, the autorip I got is for the 6CD release... 80+ tracks for £10.99.

Thanks for the tip-off.  It was still working that way on Friday.  Although after my first listen through, including 'Mother', I was wondering if I should really be thanking you!  How did that ever get through any quality control?!

Hmm, it's not great is it? I prefer the instrumental version later in the set.

Right, mega clearance in Cheltenham Oxfam shop - ALL CDs, DVDs, records and books for £1 each, until Friday/Saturday

Yesterday - Benji Kirkpatrick's "Hendrix Songs" CD (brand new, still sealed!), Paul Simon Anthology 2CD set, Divine Comedy best of 2CD set, 2 x Cauld Blast Orchestra CDs, and the Lick The Tins CD.

I spent some Xmas money from the in-laws today at the local Oxfam book & record shop. Two LPs and a book...

Richard & Linda's Sunnyvista for £10
Steeleye Span's All Around My Hat for £3
George Harrison book by Joshua M Greene titled Here Comes The Sun for £3.

They had Unhalfbricking on vinyl but at £40 I decided I could live without that.

Dont worry Oxfam hardly ever make mistakes on item values! They seldom make it to the shelves if they are worth anything major

For me, I've never known an organisation which so consistently prices everything at virtually top whack (i.e. what's the top price on Discogs or ABE?) but then make precisely no account of the condition of the item they're selling.  My local Oxfam (in Keswick) is full to the brim of items with very major price tags.  Some of them are even worth it, but most not.  But I do love getting a bargain from an Oxfam...a little bit of knowledge and once in a while you can still come out of there silently pumping one's fist in the air ;)

Almost exactly  what I've said on this subject  before. Oxfam etc don't seem to realise 'book price'  is for the item in mint condition.  Not a beat up old copy which is barely worth playing.

Well I'm pleased to say that both the LPs I bought yesterday at Oxfam are in good condition and well worth the money I paid.

Somewhat bizarrely they were selling bars of soap at the counter when I went to pay for the records and book. They have another shop up the road so maybe the staff there had over-ordered on the soap products.

Following on from the Police Synchronicity box download thing on Amazon, I discovered today that the same thing happens if you purchase the 2CD version of Dylan's Springtime In New York: Bootleg Series 16 - 1981-85, ie you end up with the download of the full 5CD version, which covers Shot of Love, Infidels and Empire Burlesque. It's mainly outtakes from those sessions, and some alternate takes and a few live versions.  I'm just starting to listen now, so can't comment on the quality, but other reviewers have said that the Empire Burlesque versions particularly benefit from being before Arthur Baker got his hands on them.

You do just have to be careful that you buy the version sold direct by Amazon, not the slightly cheaper one which says 'dispatches from Amazon' but is sold by someone else, otherwise you don't get the AutoRip download.

Steve Vai - The Infinite SV Anthology (I've never knowingly heard anything by SV, I bought it purely on the strength of hearing him play with Beat - reinventing the 80s Crim repertoire).

Fwiw, I think it's well worth £6 but it breaks my heart how badly put together the whole thing is.  There are numerous typos and misspellings and effectively, I think, people's submissions are just thrown in, as is, almost entirely unedited.  This means that disputed or downright erroneous material is included as fact.  The guy has landed on a formula...I get it.  At the time of this publication he lists 18 other similar books (Wedding Present, OMD, Queen, Led Zep, Beatles etc etc etc).  I'd rather a book lovingly put together by a devoted fan myself.  Still, for me, the price of admission was well worth paying for Koen's relatively lengthy description and images from 31 Dec 99.... I'll probably keep an eye open for an equally cheap as chips Cropredy book but I don't think I'd pay the original asking price.

Once it’s in print, it’s fact - especially once it’s been scraped by AI. Also, whatever the provenance, that’s a bloody awful cover. Obviously once you’ve copied and pasted everyone’s submissions you’ve saved yourself the time, extensive research and insight that typifies (say) Graeme Thompson’s peerless biographies, and got a nice little earner, and everyone’s got to make a living, so good luck and kind fortune to all the recipients of the takings/royalties, who I’m guessing don’t include anyone who contributed content?* It’s the literary equivalent of “There’s no money, but it’s good exposure”
I loved Joss Mullinger’s Festival Folk by the way. And yes, I did contribute to the festival programme that one time.

*I don’t know. That’s the internet for you. It’s out there now, so therefore true.  ;)

Ok, I've just finished this, and I must say I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it. A couple of interesting anecdotes, but you really have to look for them amongst the sheer ordinariness of how people discovered FC.
One point of interest - I was amazed by the number of people who discovered FC later in their lives, well after the Farewell Farewell era.
Otherwise this is one for the completists only.

I suspect that is just a) simple ageing demographics and b) people that knew about it (i.e. ones that engage on chat pages and social media) - in other words it's almost self-selecting.

Well, even though I was one of those who contributed to it with a memory of a particular Cropredy (2007) I fully understand what you mean. However, the formula obviously works, as the existence of several other similar books about other artists shows all too clearly.

Amusingly, someone's seen this publishing concept, picked it up and run with it, and is doing a version on, for and about Mott the Hoople. "What do you mean 'It was my idea to copy and paste other people's submissions and take the credit for it?!'"  ;D

Whilst we're having a moan, that "Every album, every track" series of books are pretty awful as well (or at the very least could be massively improved without the constraints of the series)...  ;D At least the 33 1/3 books are variable and sometimes brilliant, sometimes average, sometimes excremental.

I was in my late teens when I discovered Fairport, in the very early 80s, so maybe not well after the Farewell Farewell era, but certainly not later in life!  I was too young to have ever seen them with Sandy, or even with Swarb (other than as a guest).

And yes, many of the stories are 'ordinary', but then many of us are 'ordinary'.  I enjoyed reading both books for that very reason.

Picked up the following at my favorite record store yesterday (Hoboken)

Take Me Back To Tulsa-4 disc Bob Wills collection
Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison (Legacy Edition)
A Bob Seger 2 disc UK imprint that includes some real rarities such as Rosalie, Innervenus Eyes, and Lenny Johnson…not official release but I couldn’t resist
Steeleye Span-Liive At The Bottom Line 1974. One interesting thing on this one is a medley of 3 Irish tunes-Musical Priest, Silver Spear and the High Reel. Well known tunes I’m sure Peter knew but that pairing makes me think someone had been listening to Horslips!

All for $45!

3 CDs for £1 at a charity stall in Tesco car park...

Matt Steady (celtic guitar rock sampler album),

Baka Beyond's live album,

and....

"BAM! Big Mustaphas play stereolocalmusic" by, er, "3 Mustaphas 3 meet l'Orchestre BAM de Grand Mustapha International & Party" - the first two EPs collected.

I'm currently reading Ian A Anderson's autobiography (Alien Water), and when he mentions 3 Mustaphas 3 I am reminded that I never heard anything by them, and I feel I ought to have done.

Matt Steady's sampler is available for free from him. I really like his music - his last album Flight Of The Raven is brilliant. TBH I prefer his instrumental stuff to his songs though.

On topic, while visiting Guildford at the weekend for Al Stewart's concert, I went to the local HMV which is apparently closing at the end of the month.  I picked up a few reduced price CDs: the 25th anniversary edition of Buena Vista Social Club, Shirley Collins' Archangel Hill and Dexys Too-Rye-Ay 'As It Should Have Sounded' remix (single CD edition). Also Sheku Kanneh-Mason playing Elgar's Cello Concerto which will do nicely as a present for Mrs Will's Christmas stocking.

Music Magpie on eBay are knocking 20% off orders with a code for the next couple of days, so it seemed like a good time to grab the new Who and Dylan boxed sets. Amounted to a hefty saving of over 40 smackers.

Whilst in Southport for Mike Courtney's 70th birthday party at the weekend, we popped in to the Roy Castle Charity Shop there and picked up

Runrig - Mara
Jaco Pastorious - Word Of Mouth
Pink - I'm Not Dead

for a grand total of £1.

Happy with that.

That's the one!

Wow, that's a hefty price on Discogs. I paid £2 for mine, yesterday. I had no idea that some cassettes might still be collectable, Ever since I moved house, a few months ago, I've been planning to take a boxful down to a local charity shop but perhaps I need to have a look through and check whether any of them are worth a few quid!

Going back to Wishbone Ash, they're not a band I know particularly well. I found a copy of their Front Page News album a while ago (also on cassette, funnily enough) which was pretty enjoyable so it's been nice to pick up a couple more.

Will do. Though I should imagine most of them won't be of any interest, there might be a few that might be up your street. I'll send you the list tomorrow.

On ebay , described as authentic  & genuine , a  signed copy of Amy Winehouse's posthumous Lioness CD , For under a tenner inc P&P
I reported it to Ebay , they investigated, and found it didn't contravene any of  their policies , which tells you all you need to know about Ebay

If eBay got rid of all the patently false 'autographed items' on its platform there would be virtually nothing left.  I regularly see signed items I know absolutely to be fakes selling for hundred of pounds.  And the more they emphasise the 'Certificate of Authenticity' (oh, how we laugh) the more likely the item is to be a deception.  You'd be amazed how many sharpies there were around in the mid 1970s.... ;D

Ha!  Nice.

Having seen Blue Tapestry twice (including their storming set at Cropredy 2003 which Procol Harum had a job following), I'd loved to have seen them again - the loss of Maart & Pete Zorn alas makes this impossible...

They really were one of the most perfect Cropredy bands ever...sun setting at the end of an incredibly hot day...a band of supreme musicians playing music the Cropredy demographic would be familiar with (Joni & Carole), playing it with real skill and affection. No wonder Procol Harum had a hell of a job following them...

One moment I remember was Julie putting out a call from the stage for a certain bass player, as Pete Zorn wanted to play sax on "Raised On Robbery", and Peggy was still at the bar. It was quite funny to see the short delay as a refreshed, been in the sun all day ruddy-faced Peggy ran from the bar as fast as he could, strapped on Pete's bass and played a great version of said Joni song...

Sorry, had missed that.  I think the Brum 80th bash was the first time he'd entered my consciousness.  He was certainly a great drummer that night.

I think Tasha is right - it was never the Blu-Ray set that was reduced, 'just' the CD-set (which is back up to £39.99 now).  Isn't that correct?
