Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Malcolm on July 31, 2010, 09:56:29 AM Sad news indeed. I seem to recall reading somewhere that, without her influence on the young Swarb, he might not have become a fiddler!

The yoke passes to us to follow their example Beryl was clearly one of those people . Important to Swarb and the band and known to many of us who follow the crafts and skills that she displayed so well. We are able to rejoice in memories that she has left for us My thoughts are with all who were close to her and i stand with them in tribute to her dave preston Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: koho (Koen) on July 31, 2010, 04:32:40 PM Very sorry to hear this. I don't know much about piano to be honest, but her style was immensely recognizable. Happy memories of the various Ceilidh line ups at Cropredy with Beryl's flying fingers leading the way, or her performing the wonderful Jenny Nettles there with, I think, just Ric and Chris. One of those unforgettable moments. Sincere condolances.
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: gower flower (Shirl) on July 31, 2010, 07:23:16 PM Very sorry to hear this news. I never got to see her at Cropredy, but I do have some recordings of her work. Jenny Nettles springs to mind. I will listen to it this evening in tribute. :(

Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: folkfreak (Alexander) on July 31, 2010, 07:46:29 PM Very sad.
As a piano player I always thought I played the wrong instrument for folk, but she did it perfect.... RIP Alex Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Suzanne on July 31, 2010, 09:06:20 PM Sorry to read this news. :( My deepest sympathies to Roger, Katie and Bill at this time. She was a terrific musician and, by all accounts, a lovely person too.
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Brendan on July 31, 2010, 10:33:31 PM A truly sad loss, Weave the Mirror is never off my cd player long, some of the most beautiful music, so many high points. Lochaber No More, Bridget Cruise, the music on the Celidh ALbum and much more. My thoughts go out to her family and those who knew her.
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Steve with the black dog on July 31, 2010, 10:46:55 PM What sad news. My sympathies to all who knew her and worked with her.
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: hendo (Dave) on July 31, 2010, 11:42:30 PM One of those magical Cropredy moments when Swarb and Beryl played together. Giggles from younger people down the front who had no idea who she was when she walked on and then a complete change in the atmosphere as they slowly realised the talent they were watching, as Beryl and Sward just encouraged each other to greater heights.
Just really sad but remembered as a groundbreaking musician and mentor to others. A real character Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Simon Care on August 01, 2010, 06:57:17 AM HI,
Very sad news. I remember seeing Beryl with Swarb at Moulton Festival when i was about 13/14. It was one of those moments that i will remember forever. I think that Swarb talks about Beryl in an interview in the latest issue of Living Tradition , where he tells how Beryl taught him how to dance, so he would understand how to play for dance.......very wise words . God Bless Beryl Simon Care Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Big Dave on August 01, 2010, 07:00:02 AM Well stated Simon.
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: davidmjs on August 01, 2010, 10:45:35 AM Very sad news indeed. I was lucky enough to see the FC Ceilidh Band a couple of times in the 80's (Portsmouth and, can't remember, Gloucester, I think) as well as Beryl's appearances at Cropredy over the years. Always a joy. She will be much missed.
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Angela on August 01, 2010, 04:30:57 PM RIP Beryl and condolences to Roger and family.
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Thor-Rune on August 01, 2010, 10:03:57 PM Heartbreaking news! I am glad I got to see her play live. Anyone yet to hear "Weave the mirror" (the album she made with the Fairports in 1991) is strongly recommended to have a listen to it. She was a wonderful musician and a major inspiration to so many of the musicians we grew to love. RIP!
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Joss on August 01, 2010, 10:36:11 PM So sad, such a wonderful musician, she made it look & sound so easy! I'm so glad I managed to include a photo of her in my book.
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Jamie73 on August 01, 2010, 10:54:16 PM Very sad indeed - I remember seeing her support Fairport in I think 1991 doing stuff from the newly released Weave The Mirror.
Thoughts go to her family. Best Jamie Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: fstix (Michael) on August 02, 2010, 11:58:44 AM Sorry to hear this news - and thoughts very much going to Swarb now too - this really hasn't been a good year so far in terms of musical comrades passing....
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: kascade on August 02, 2010, 02:45:45 PM R.I.P Beryl and thoughts go out to all who knew her
Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Delfini (Diane) on August 02, 2010, 04:53:36 PM Oh that is sad :'( I saw her play several times with Swarb, and at Cropredy, and loved listening to her.
Who was it described her as 'looking like everyone's favourite grannie until she got her hands on a keyboard??' I was lucky enough to see her at a Fairport gig when I had 'The Gift' in my bag - I got it signed by her......and was chuffed to bits. My sympathies to her family and Swarb Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Polly Oxford (Andie) on August 02, 2010, 06:12:15 PM I can remember the first time I saw her, having only heard her play before, and how odd it was to reconcile the mumsy figure with the music - until she got going, then it really didn't seem relevant anymore. How wonderful to have such a talent to inspire, how sad that she's gone.
My thoughts to all who knew her well. Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Delfini (Diane) on August 02, 2010, 06:40:53 PM Who was it described her as 'looking like everyone's favourite grannie until she got her hands on a keyboard??' Hope no-one thought I was being rude - it was meant as a compliment :-[ Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: David (terrrrrrrr) on August 02, 2010, 08:31:58 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czEJj82xC-0

Is there a formal obit anywhere yet? Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: Simon Nicol on August 06, 2010, 02:32:51 PM I’ve heard from Roger, Katie and Bill that Beryl's funeral will take place on the Tuesday following Cropredy, August 17th, at Noon at All Saints Church, Wing, Bucks LU7 0NY.
The family has said anyone is welcome to come and remember her, and that any floral tributes should be sent via S R Dillamore Ltd 16, Old Road Regent House LEIGHTON BUZZARD LU7 2RF Tel: 01525 301720 If however, you would prefer a charitable donation to Beryl's own elected one, then Médicins sans Frontières is where to go. I have spoken with them, and they say the best way is online, via http://www.justgiving.com/ where you can make a one-off, Gift-Aided donation and have no fear of being "charity-mugged" with junk mail if you opt out. You can also include a personal message in her memory! Don’t be put off by the appearance of the front page of justgiving’s website: a couple of clicks will take you through to the MSF single payment page. If I can do it, so can you! Title: Re: Beryl Marriott RIP Post by: davidmjs on August 24, 2010, 11:13:30 AM There's a lot more dancing on that than I remember at the two FCB gigs I went to (which were far too full to dance!)....
