Title: RT - New (old) acoustic album
Post by: Tim Fletcher on June 04, 2014, 01:03:17 PM
Something to look forward to in July  :)

I was vaguely hoping that there might have been a recording of the Half Moon show with Danny T, but this sounds like a reasonable replacement.

I'm not clear - are these newly recorded versions, or is it a compilation of previously released versions?

Equally, though, I can't make out whether these new recordings are studio or live ???

Good Q!

Studio, I suspect, otherwise I think it would say 'Live' or indicate so...

I've feeling that fairly recently there was picture of Richard in a studio posted somewhere so I'm guessing that was for this. I presume that if it was live it would say so. I've ordered it so if you want to wait until July I'll let you know!

It looks like they've cannibalised the old Garrard lion logo for the sleeve too, presumably a sign there'll be a vinyl version...

RTs used that logo for some time now - check out his merchandise on his website

I actually snagged a copy of this at a live show back in February. I can confirm that these are definitely in studio (and that there's a full Thompson family album on the way, though I'm not certain that's news -- Teddy mentioned it at the show). I really enjoy the acoustic reworks. They'll be familiar to anyone who has seen a one-man show with Richard in recent years.

There's a small part of me that was thinking, "Oh, I have acoustic versions of these songs elsewhere, I'll just take a pass on this one."
But the other part of me (roughly the other 99.7%) thought, "Oh shut up, you're going to buy it, and enjoy it."
So basically, not too enthusiastic at first, but now very much looking forward to it.  Mainly because the songs do evolve over time, and I just can't get enough RT...

Have just reviewed this in "Listening to..."

For those who have bought it this month, how different is the packaging from the earlier-available version that Arie posted?

Downloaded a couple of days ago from iTunes. £7.99. Yes I could have put the thing together as a compilation from other albums but this is himself playing solo. The quality is wonderful.

Well done RT.

Its good and everything, but personally I would rather listen to Celtschmetz - But then I don't think obsessive fans are the target audience, and if it raises his profile that's all to the good.

I'd say this is a welcome addition to my RT collection. Nice to have a studio version of 'From Galway to Graceland' as the only other version I have is on the Life and Music boxed set.

I too have been thinking that was the new album's major attraction.

Was there not a studio version on Watching The Dark? Or am I misremembering?

It's also on Walking On A Wire, Disc 3 but I don't own that compilation either. I'm not what you would call a completist. I don't have the money!

I'm pleased to see that the new-look RT web site still has a link to the old one with the Song-o-matic search - http://archive.richardthompson-music.com/Song.asp

I do have that version.  Wasn't it a demo?

According to Discogs it was a live version on both Watching The Dark and Walking On A Wire.

There you go.  I knew it was something other than a studio master!  Thanks, Mike.

I thought it was recorded specially for the compilation. I am sure it says something to that effect in the sleevenotes but I do not have it to hand so I cannot check.

With regard to the new album, I was disappointed to note that despite its impressive debut within the top 20 of the albu chart, there was no sign of it amongst the "chart" albums in my local supermarket where I thought I might pick up a copy while I was there.

From the sleeve of Watching The Dark :

"From Galway To Graceland - previously unreleased track : Live, The Iron Horse, Northampton, MA, October 3, 1990."

Reading this thread and had to double check, didn't think it was a studio recording...

Fair enough. It is a long time since I have listened to it. Unfortunately (& this will be heresy to some) it is one of those much loved RT songs which, like Beeswing and 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, I don't particularly like. That might also be why I am resisting this album somewhat. I admire RTs acoustic work and have enjoyed many of his solo concerts but I don't love it like I love his playing with a band.
