We will be there as well and we are looking for a B & B in a walkable distance, so that we don´t have to drive back home. Can somebody help?

We stayed here after the Symphony hall show - and the town hall is only the other side of the library

Would recommend a cab afterwards - cost us only a fiver at 1:30 am, coz its quite a walk - but bus into town from the hotel to the gig was about £1.40 each and every 5mins

Got put onto it originally by Gower Flower - who we shared (well sort of shared) breakfast and discussed the show the night before, very enjoyable ..... Full English Breakfast the lot - and that night was £40 for a double room inc breaky

Booked it through laterooms

http://www.birminghamnet.co.uk/hotels/90612-portland.html?d=2007-02-17&n=1

won't give a price yet tho.... guess its not a late room yet :)

:)

Were also planning to be at the show - the town hall was the first place I saw Fairport - i think around about 1988 - lots of beer since then ..... and its 8 days after my 40th..... feels like i should be there really

I just spoke with Peggy earlier this morning, at the moment he is busily beavering away in Brittany writing up the sleeve notes for his forthcoming 4 CD boxed set and chatting with various record labels in an attempt to get the green light to use material to which these labels own copyright.
Peggy will be flying back to the UK on Friday in preparation for the gig in Banff on Saturday, he's really looking forward to playing in Scotland again.
He asked me to pass on his love and best wishes to everyone on the TAW board.

Angela asked for help finding a sensibly priced room in Brum for the night of November 3rd. I had a browse and found this budget hotel, it's part of the Accor group of hotels, a no frills establishment @ £35 per room. (up to 3 people in a room) It is within reasonable walking distance of the Town Hall.

You'll have to be careful with that Dennis Angela, Brum has some excellent, and huge, music shops especially that one behind Snow Street Station whose name evades me fer a minute.... never seen so many guitars.

(City Music just looked it up)

We are on the 5th row (centre) as well, I booked at 10am on Monday and asked where best to sit as we were disapointed with the sound at the Symphony Hall in Feb.

Booked my tickets yesterday got 3rd row (I think, that excited can't recall exactly) but in centre. Posting out to me and hey  no booking fee just £2. postage!!  Excellent price was expecting much dearer for Birmingham city centre !!
Now to book some accommodation.....there are some good offers on.....
Now I wonder who may be the guests on this promising to be memorable Birthday Bash ????   We should perhaps club together to get a genuine leather holder for Peggys new bus pass..ho..ho....what a fab present what?  ho..ho..
Had a quick look online  at the newly renovated Town Hall, my word what a fabulous building, I think it is going to be a night to remember..the work will not be finished until about October I believe but I guess we will all feel pretty special walking into this most elegant, historical building with such a history of music going back to the sixties (or even before) and thinking of all the bands and people who have played there before like going to the opera..sooo posh !!  Bit like Southport Arts Centre methinks...roflmho.....honest!!
Seriously it will be a truly great meeting of 'talkawhilers' (after Croppers of course ) Looking froward to seeing you all there!!!

Agreed! I did go there once in the sixties, to see John Mayall's Bluesbrakers (the Mick Taylor line-up, as I recall).

I saw Tull, Fairport and Steeleye Span there in the space of a year during the 1990s. The Tull gig was excellent, with the band wearing miner's hats! Allcock and Pegg were both part of the lineup.

I'm really jealous of you lot. My parents don't seem to realise that this concert is important so every time I mention it, they say "You'll see Fairport at Cropredy and at Cambridge next year" They just don't get it!!! I think if I tell my dad that there is a chance that Robert Plant might be there (please tell me that there is a chance) then they might let me go.

I was wondering earlier why my tickets for this gig haven't arrived. I phoned Symphony Hall and was told it's because they haven't been printed yet!  :P

No doubt they mentioned this at the time I booked, but of course I had forgotten. So if any of you other old codgers out there are having a similar senior moment, just be aware! ;D

Apparently, the tickets might not arrive until August :o

Radio 2 Folk news website has a list of guest at this gig which I do not think has been mentioned before
Quote
DAVE PEGG BOX SET AND BIRTHDAY CONCERT [11/04/07]
2007 is a gala year for Fairport Convention bassist Dave Pegg. On July 30th, Free Reed will release A Box Of Peggs, a four-CD box set representing his 44-year musical career. For the past 12 months Pegg has been working closely with compiler Nigel Schofield on a limited edition of 2000 copies which will contain over 70 tracks, many rare and previously unreleased, plus a 100-page illustrated book. The first 500 pre-orders received by May 31st will earn their purchasers a bonus CD of additional tracks and a namecheck in the book by way of thanks. Then on November 2nd Pegg celebrates his 60th birthday, which will be marked with a concert on the following day at the recently-renovated Birmingham Town Hall. Dave has invited a host of his musical chums including fellow Fairporters, Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, Steve Ashley, Steve Tilston, Ian Campbell, the Dylan Project, Dave Swarbrick, Beryl Marriott and more to join him onstage in what promises to be a musical feast. Tickets are now on sale from the box office on 0121 780 3333. Details of how to order A Box Of Peggs from Fairport Convention's website.

These people have not only been approched, but have 'expressed an interest'

Fairport Convention, Ian Anderson and Martin Barre from Jethro Tull, Maartin Allcock, BobFox, Anna Ryder, Tiny Tin Lady, Steve Ashley, Steve Tilston, Ian Campbell, Steve Gibbons, P.J. Wright plus Beryl and Roger Marriott.

Also, GF, someone has already got their tickets, according to a comment made of FC's website. Maybe you did ring the wrong place ?  ;)

Partially thwarted!!!

The allure of Peggy plus Anderson/Barre etc was too much. I just hpe that Liverpool aren't playing at home that weekend or I've got a rather quick drive on.

Booked my ticket online, good going...............................  then tried to book the hotel. everything going OK until I pressed the button and .....  credit card expired.

No it isn't I shout!  it expires in July...... ah, it will have expired by November, therefore no-one will accept it as a guarantee for room bookings.

Have just phoned the hotel and they are aslo confused. Told me they will ring me back in 10 minutes.. I will wait..............

I can't remember who was listed on the FC site now, but I imagine we will see the usual suspects, for example PJ Wright, Maart, and most if not all of the other FC  and Tull personnel who have played with Peggy in his illustrious career ;D ::). Just to be going on with ::)

Don't worry, I was told "tickets in August" too. (There is a post further back I think on this very point)

They told me the tickets had yet to be printed, when I queried this. ::)

Details of how to order A Box Of Peggs from Fairport Convention's website.

...and.......!!

Maybe you did ring the wrong place ?  ;)

What do you mean, "expressed an interest"?  He'll be there.

Althoug I will not be there for those wanting pre show drinkies i would heartily recommend the Wellington on Bennets Hill, very close the the TH. Brum's real ale pub with 30 - 40 on at any one time. Only oroblem is no food but you can take your own in with you if you want and I am sure there are some takeaways nearby. Alternatively if you want a fantastic pie and chips the Old Joint Stock near the cathedral, again only a coupleof minutes from the venue, is very good value and serves a great pint of Fullers.

Hello

I'm well new to all this virtual business, but have happy real time memories of Dudley Town Hall about a decade ago; sadly this time I've generated a spare ticket (£12.50 choir seats!) as my wife isn't able to travel - I understand the gig is sold out, so if anyone wants a last minute treat, I'm only too happy to make it available to TAW at a tenner or so...

I've checked the Chiltern Line timetable and it appears that there is normal service on Saturday but a reduced timetable on Sunday.

Changes to Train Times: Sunday 4 November
Kidderminster - Birmingham - Stratford-upon-Avon - Leamington Spa - Banbury - High Wycombe - London

London Marylebone-Birmingham Snow Hill services will be reduced to an hourly frequency and diverted to Birmingham New Street.

An hourly London Marylebone-Warwick Parkway service will also operate, with connecting buses operating between Warwick Parkway, Dorridge, Solihull and Birmingham Snow Hill. These buses are unable to call at Birmingham Moor Street.

Buses replace trains between Warwick Parkway and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Buses replace trains between West Ruislip and London Marylebone until 1000.

Passengers are strongly advised to check journey times before travelling.

Aylesbury - Amersham - London

There will be no trains between Amersham and London Marylebone until 0950. Please use London Underground's Metropolitan line between Amersham and Baker Street.

What a great show! Just got back from Brum to Chesterfield having managed to get three returned tickets by 'phone at 4pm today and just banging down in time.A mighty near three and a half hour set and whilst,as noted above, there were a few minor sound problems, given the astonishing array of performers and changeovers involved, these were really irrelevant.A super refurbished venue-a bit on the posh side perhaps but a superb auditorium with a fantastic ceiling and great lights.
I won't get everyone but after a hurdy-gurdy intro and a trawl thru Dave's early beat and blues groups, including Martin Barre, he was joined by first Swarb and then Ian Campbell, with Simon and Gerry.Swarb led on a brilliant, energetic  Hen's March thru the Midden/Four Poster Bed and seemed sprightly and full of fun throughout which was great to see. Gerry Donahue also played on this and generally played lots of superb Tele throughout. I've been listening to Close to The White Bear all week so great to hear these tunes! Roger Hill and a possibly tired Steve Gibbbons joined Dave for a rambling talking blues which ended up eating into the timescale as Gibbons totally stiffed and forgot his words-on several occasions-possibly prompted by his inability to get his guitar to work. Poor lad-you had to feel for him but everyone saw the funny side-well he was let back on later anyhow! Other guests in the first half included PJ who played some duo stuff and was generally on hand to help out,Maart who variously played bass and piano and AnnA Ryder.Current Fairport made an appearance with a spirited Wait For The Tide To Come In with a wicked solo from Ric. Ian Anderson,Martin Barre,Doanne Perry and Clive Bunker joined Peggy for the first half climax of Bouree and a not-too-quiet Locomotive Breath. Ian was in great voice both playing and singing and we even got some one-legged action!
The second half was astonishing in terms of music and performers-Steve Ashley,Steve Tilston,Beth Neilson-Chapman,who sang a sublime Solo and Dan Ar Bras, ditto with Rising For The Moon. Ralph McTell added to the who's who before Steve Gibbons led The Dylan Project into Like A Rolling Stone and nearly remembered most of the words this time! A great Best Wishes led by its author was the first encore followed by a nearly full cast(Mssrs Anderson and Barre were missing)Meet On The Ledge.
I've missed out LOADS of detail and songs but hope the above gives a feel.Peggy sure has a lot of friends! A once in-a-lifetime show and Cropredy included, one of the biggest family get-togethers for years,I would imagine.
Cheers Peggy. Happy birthday mate.

Was there several complicated dance routines which rendered the performers unable to sing?

Indeed - what a gig, what an after-show! Ian A had left by the time MOTL came around, and Martin B probably felt rather abandoned to do MOTL with him. Doane Perry also sat out MOTL I think.

Poor Steve G though - the best stiff I've seen in a long while, and generated plenty of guffaws. Cused the cutrting of one track in the second half - The Swirling Pit - that track had no guests assinged to it, being a straight FC number.

The was a single video camera set up by the sound desk, so whether a full DVD will be fdorthcoming is debatable, but yes, I think the intention maybe to release a CD of the event - but only if you all buy Peggy's box set first - there's a fair few left!

A cracking night. Hvaing got down to Brum rather late due to the M6 problems, booked into the hotel. Really enjoyed the gig. Comedy highlights for me :

The dancing to Tull behind the stage, Steve G's complete mindbender.

The downside :

the fire alarm going off at some god awful hour in the ETAP due to some drunken git. I sat up in bed so fast I hit my head on the bunk bed above me!

Not sure they followed the rules though, some little man running up and down shouting false alarm!!!!!!

Anyway. Rather excellent evening. Next stop Ralph McTell at the lowry - and I will be buying Tull tickets for the Lowry next year!

Wow.. what a weekend and what a gig!  Reminiscent of Peggy's 50th at Dudley Town Hall.. but a lot posher!

The whole evening was fast paced, each change being very slick, and most confined to no more than two numbers.  I lost track of who played what with who...  but there were no lows at all for me and some superb highs.

Dan ar Bras Rising for the Moon partially in French was truly sublime as was Beth NC's Solo.  Bouree was fab and I recalled a schoool friend letting me hear it for the first time in those days of Living in the Past and Witches Promise.. now to be hearing it played in this situation.. perfect :)

Peggy asked us if we'd come to Brum Town Hall next year for his 70th birthday.. we all said we would...  ;D

It was lovely to see so many TAWers there .. too many to name... but we all had a great time, both at the gig and afterwards  ;D

Oh there was one low though..  the price of the drinks.... :o

Roll on Peggy's 70th (but not too fast!)

It went along the lines of Peggy asking "Shall we do it again next year" ?  Of course the crowd screamed Yeah and by calling it his 70th next year, he implied we could possibly one day attend his 150th.........Oh..it was one of those..you had to be there !!!

What a superb evening, atmosphere and music.  Organising it all must have been horrendous and the smooth running......number of artists etc.  Hats off to all involved.

Thank you for letting us share in your 60th birthday Peggy.......when do the tix for your 70th go on sale ??

Hi jangast, you probably can't see it because you have 'anonymous member' under your name. If you look at the homepage of TAW you should see a big red sign saying 'Anonymous members please read this' or something similar ( I can't tell you exactly because only anonymouses can see it!)

And what a nice place for a birthday party  ;)
I can´t name a highlight for me, but Beth NC was so good, she made me cry. And Dan Ar Braz. And Swarb.
And.......................

So many funny moments. Did you see The TTL dancing during Bouree?

Stagemanager Simon did a great job. It was hard work to get all the people onstage in time, because everybody was chatting backstage. And having some drinks  ;)

WOW!!!!! What an amazing gig!

I'd be hard pushed to pick a particular favorite bit of the evening - it was all so fabulous but Beth N-C was amazing... DH's Birthday song was really cool.... Ian Anderson was on form... and Steve Gibbons had me howling with laughter - I was very impressed that he managed to keep things going so well whilst he regained his composure!

It was great to meet up with a few people for a beer or six too.

All in all... fantastic weekend, great company, and a brilliant gig

It was a wonderful night, with several artists who I've never heard live before. Every set was memorable.

I thought that Steve Gibbons was joking about having forgotten the words until about halfway through that song about an ugly woman. It was really funny, and he recovered his composure amazingly well.

It would be nice if anything recorded could be released. Even as an audio download if it wasn't up to scratch as a commercial release.

I look forward to next year's "70th", which I too believe is more than a jest.

Michael Hunter of Fiddlestix has posted this to YouTube.. as
supplied by Neil Wayne of Free Reed - (I hope it's ok for me to pass it on...)

It's Meet On The Ledge, recorded live at Dave Pegg's recent 60th
birthday bash, with a "spot the star" grouping on stage.

Just watched this. It's great but apart from a lack of Tull's there didn't seem to be much of a certain Mr. Hughes, unless I'm going blind  8) 8) Was he still stuck backstage? :-X

Could it have been Phil Bond who plays with the Dylans now, there were many peeps on the piano but he played quite a few tunes ????   8)

Maart is playing piano (and he's definitely not bald).  The chap in question with a very short hair cut is Dan ar Bras and standing next to him is Steve Gibbons.   ;)
