I have tickets for Brum which should be a good one.

Sad though that the two acts I got into as a result of listening to Fc and looking for "similar" music are now hanging up their boots with the Oysters and Show Hands.

That time is coming to us all...

Saxophonist David Sanborn, age 78, from prostate cancer.

He played on everything from "Young Americans" to "Still Crazy After All These Years." I fondly remember when Sanborn was a regular Friday night addition to David Letterman's studio band, and occasionally took over when Paul Shaffer was elsewhere. (Of course, they always played "Young Americans" when he was present.) He was an incredibly tasteful player, and I will miss him.

Very sad. He played on so much great stuff from the 60s onward. One of my favourites is his unlikely appearance on the second album by German new wave band Nena which is called ?. He totally owns the title track and also the song Lass Mir Dein Pirat Sein.

On Saturday night I strolled down the road to see The Darkside of Pink Floyd - our local PF tribute act (all the way from Torbay!).  That makes them sound low budget, and while not being the Aussie PF, they were definitely not that, with the round screen behind them showing films along with the songs, and a light show with lasers, etc.  A basic band of four were supplemented by a couple of backing singers and an occasional extra guitarist, and put on a very good show.  They were highlighting the Pulse era, and played most of what was on the live album, including (almost) all of DSOTM.  We also had a surprise (for me) with Sheep appearing at the start of the second half - I don't think I have ever heard it played live on any of the PF albums I have.

The male backing singer also did some quick costume changes, appearing as the head teacher in Another Brick..., a lunatic at the end of DSOTM and a few others too.  The only thing that clued you in to it not being the real PF (apart from them appearing to a crowd of a couple of hundred people in our Community Centre!  Grin) were the vocals - not wrong, just a bit different, and obviously that is the hardest thing to mimic.

Recommended if you see them playing near you. They seem to be mainly touring in the SW, but do venture outside from time to time.

Is Al Stewart on the bill too?  I heard he was playing some concerts with America this year in the US.

I don't know - no opener has been identified yet. I also just found out that America is no longer a duo, as Gerry Beckley retired at the end of 2023. Dewey Bunnell is now the sole founder member. I'm disappointed, but Dewey wrote and sang "Tin Man," "Horse With No Name," "Sandman" and "Ventura Highway," so he's no slouch. He has every legal and moral right to call himself "America." Looking forward to it!

String Driven Thing : The Machine that Cried (Esoteric CD,  2012).

This is rather good, although the CD sounds  somewhat bright.  Interesting  sleeve essay.  SDT were another band who had stuff to offer but never quite got the credit they deserved.
