I was talking to the lady on RT's merch stall at the Phil tonight and she reckons that there are more dates to come - the published dates are just those confirmed so far, so I'm hoping for a Liverpool date.

Given an impoverished financial situation at the mo, I shall attend to obtaining one for that gig toot sweet after Cropredy is out of the way.  ;)

Cambridge usually half and half, with the upstairs balcony seated and the flat floor standing. Not sure whether it will be this time, best check with the venue.

Went to the first night in Salford last night - top class, you get the whole of Dream Attic in the first half. From memory I think there were only about two songs on the acoustic guitar all night, he rocked hard!

Does anyone know if there's a support act on the tour or is it 2 sets from himself? Hopefully we'll get there in plenty of time. The weather in Lancs is pretty horrible today.

And very good it was too.

Didn't meet anybody I knew, did meet a few people who'd been in the same fields as me, and I think I glimpsed Maart.

Likewise the second night. Be prepared for some epic guitar workouts on this tour! I don't think it was the whole of Dream Attic - he did say they'd play most of it. Some brilliant drumming from MJ on Demons and If Love. I love watching that guy play.

There didn't seem to be that many songs in the 2nd set, partly coz of the solos. I think with the encore it was an about hour's worth. I'll put my second set highlights in a spoiler. Picked up a copy of Ducknapped at the merchandise table. Great night's music.  8)

Hi
Fantastic night!

He missed out Crimescene and Bad Again from the Dream Attic 'half' but this was more than made up for by a performance that was rich and magical, especially on Burning Man, Sidney Wells (even more intense than on 'record' and the highlight of the night') and 'If Love...'.  Remarkable.

Second half was really very good indeed - great to hear 'Angels took my racehorse away' and the solo-ing on 'Can't Win was amazing.  Funny jokes about the lyric stand being for 'philosophical notes' such as 'Be Here Now' (apt Oasis in-joke for Manchester!).

By the way, hello everyone!

Tom

I enjoyed 'Sidney Wells' more than I expected to as I wouldn't have said it was a favourite from the album. Even though Dream Attic is a live album, hearing it played live made it, as you say, more intense. Actually I think it was that song rather than 'Demons...' which featured some impressive drumming from Michael Jerome. Must be the 9/8 time sig. How did he describe it? Dum-ti-dum?  :)

'A Brother Slips Away' was another highlight. Beautiful song. Very emotional.

Seen Mr T 30 times now, saturday night was one of the best.

It's also one of the few times I have been inspired to thank the chap on the mixing desk for such excellent sound.

Yes, it's a fair cop. We were at the gig in Salford Lowry on Saturday night with our friends Desi and Julie Friel (Anna's mam and dad). Somehow Desi and Julie have managed to miss RT live until now, but they were knocked out. Desi almost literally backstage when he tripped over a clothes rail sustaining a very nasty wrist sprain which necessitated a visit to A&E the next day.

Quite the best guitar gig I have EVER seen, and Pete Zorn was a total star too. They were all great. Standing ovation at the end. Still buzzing and I'll have to go see it again. Recommended.

Found a review of Friday night's gig. Can't say I agree with all of it but it looks like a web site where anyone can post.

http://www.thepublicreviews.com/the-richard-thompson-band-%E2%80%93-the-lowry-salford/

No-one has mentioned Joel Zifkin's contribution which, being an occasional fiddle player, I enjoyed. Only slight criticism is that there were times when both he and Pete were playing identical melodies which I didn't think worked too well. I'm trying to think if RT has toured with a fiddler player before. Certainly not that I've seen in the last 20 years. Only seen him and Swarb on stage at Cropredy.

Dammit! Should have gone on Friday. Would have much preferred to have heard Bright Lights Tonight than Man In Need. I felt the latter was a strange one to end on and left things feeling a bit flat at the end. Oh well, can't win 'em all!

I wonder whether Bright Lights got dropped because of the request for Al Bowlly?

Title: Re: RTB "Dream Attics" UK tour dates.
Post by: ColinB on January 18, 2011, 10:51:37 AM
I think Al Bowlly was in the set anyway. I heard someone a few rows in front of me shout out "he played it last night". As he was doing 2 nights at the same venue he was perhaps just trying out different songs in the encore to see which went down better.

I know it's not heckling but he must be tempted sometimes to say, "Do I come to your place of work and shout things at you?"  ;D

Yes: I'll be there with a couple of chums.  Front row, middle of the left hand side.

I'm disappointed to hear that Crimescene from the new album is a possible omission from the first part of the set (as reported from one of the earlier gigs) ... I love the way the solo bursts out somehow unexpectedly from the end of the chorus, a verse or two after the chorus with a first crescendo that would normally say: "Here comes the solo"!

Still, he can't leave out both Crimescene and Sidney Wells, so I'll still have at least one great favourite to anticipate.

Simon.

Amazing gig at Aylesbury, really tight little band.

Sadly couldn't get much of a look at the astonishing Michael Jerome drumming, cos some old bloke in black with a light blue guitar was in the way. :-)

Really nice fiddling from a chap who looks just like Mr O'Reilly (the incompetent builder) from Fawlty Towers. Matching him at the other side of the stage was a Mr Pastry look-alike :-)

Makes a change to have an RT gig without either Vincent or Beeswing - hope he keeps on with Al Bowly though, it gives the bandmembers a good chance to stretch out (and show off!) Lovely new theatre, great sound from where we were sitting (row G) Would have liked a longer encore though...

Another superlative show last night in London - and he finally played Crime Scene, while dropping Here Comes Geordie from the first set. So I've heard the whole album live on stage....that band is, I think, the tightest and best RT Band ever! Mike Jerome & Taras Prodaniuk were having a ball behind RT all night....

Mike Jerome is a complete beast on that drum-kit - just watching the beads of sweat form and start running during a serious work-out during Sidney Wells was just amazing....

This band Rocks! If you like your Folk-Rock more on the rock side of folk, just don't miss this tour as I'm not sure they'll be around again for a while (* but see below)

Managed to retrieve a set-list from a crew member last night (thanks Bobby!), here's what's printed on it....

Set 1
All tracks in CD running order
(he's been leaving at least one out each night)

Set 2
Time will Show the Wiser (with Bobby Eichorn on acoustic guitar last night)
Can't Win
One Door Opens
Al Bowlly
Never Give it Up
Wall of Death
Tear Stained Letter

Encores
Take Care the Road you Choose
Bright Lights Tonight
Man in Need

Generally, he perms any 2 from 3 for an encore - we got the first two last night, ably supported by Kami T on Bright Lights....

I've got tickets to two more shows on this tour - seriously considering a fifth night, it's just so good!

Dave Pegg was in the audience last night - here's hoping he takes some ideas on rocking it up back to Fairport....

* Nancy Covey had some postcards on the merch desk advertising a FestTours trip back to Cropredy 2012, the 45th anniversary. Including a side-trip to the Summer Olympics too....so get your warm-up tickets early next year, folks, or risk a sell-out!

So that's a shoe-In for RT next year then....let's just HOPE he brings this band with him. Please.

On the plus side it's great to have Dream Attic to listen to after the gig. How often do you have a live recording of what you've just heard in concert? Haul Me Up was another highlight and one you really want to be on your feet for. One for the 'RT Rocks' compilation.

It was interesting to learn that Burning Man was inspired by the Burning Man festival (is that right?) in the States. I'd love to see the wheel of sin!

Re the 'Burning Man' Wheel of Sin, I remember seeing Elvis Costello tour King of America in 1986 with the Spectacular Spinning Songbook.  Huge spinning wheel behind the stage.  He's spin it and they'd play whatever song came up out of must have been 50.  It was fantastic, one of the best gigs ever.  Maybe RT should try it!

You should suggest it to him on his BeesWeb question and answer postings. I think he does request shows sometimes.

King of America is my favourite Elvis C album. I think I saw him in concert the previous year. With the current trend of bands performing whole albums I'd pay good money to hear King of A from start to finish. Likewise RT doing The Old Kit Bag or Rumor & Sigh.

King of America is the business!  I too would pay good money to see him play it but I guess, like RT, he'd rather focus on new/next than old.  EC did 2 nights in Liverpool in '86, his final gigs with the Attractions first time around,  and the first night was more of a 'greatest hits' gig.  It remains the benchmark for all other gigs, I'm still out of breath from it 24 years on!

When RT did 'Angels took my Racehorse Away' at the Lowry I did mischievously wonder whether he could play Henry the Human Fly in its entirety one day!!!  I'd love to hear him do 'Painted Ladies', 'Old Changing Way' etc after all this time!  Probably no-one else does though!!

I have to agree with Chris and Tim - an absolutely fantastic gig at the Festival Hall last night! Even though Dream Attic is a live album, you can't beat actually hearing the songs live, can you?  There were a couple of moments when I felt my chest might burst.  Crimescene was particularly powerful, as was If Love Whispers Your Name.  Richard was oozing with confidence throughout, chatting to the audience and cracking jokes.  I liked the fact that he introduced the new songs and gave us a little bit of background on each one.  Superb guitar, superb singing and superb support from his band.  It was an expensive gig at £35 but worth every penny!

No need to apologise - I'm a bit hazy on some of the older stuff so could easily have been mistaken, and completely missed that the opener of "Side 2" was Time Will Show The Wiser. I like the idea of a set list that appears to be merely a guideline. Probably explains why he had to be reminded that they were about to play Crimescene rather than Sidney Wells. I had resort to checking the iPod to see how much of the album had been played so losing Geordie probably wasn't a great loss (for me at least) as I had fogotten all about it.

And ... our tip for exiting the RFH if you are in the stalls, wait a few minutes for the main rush to the exits and then go right down the front and stroll nonchalently out and avoid the crush on the stairs.

It was interesting to learn that Burning Man was inspired by the Burning Man festival (is that right?) in the States. I'd love to see the wheel of sin!

It was quite obvious from the way RT was describing that festival that he'd been....so I asked him which sin hed got when he tried it...."I'm not telling you...but there were no bodily fluids involved!", was his response at Aylesbury on Monday....

RT does do an annual all-request show in the USA, but I don't think he's ever done one here in the UK. WE keep asking though, maybe one day?

I also have it on good authority that a certain Christine Collister will be 'warbling away' with RT at the RFH next Weds, you lucky people!  I'd love to hear that!!

Christine was in the audience on Tuesday - I spoke to her in the ticket collection queue, and again afterwards. It's not next Weds. though - try 2nd February! I have my front row ticket - must practice on my iphone to get a decent photo....I've had my photto pass this tour, and I won't get another....

Great reviews from Chris and Tim re the RFH gig. Dream Attic wasn't an album that I rated as one of his best but after hearing it's live performance, I must agree, it is amazing...and the power behind Sidney Wells is awesome, Michael Jerome is soooo cool.

Looked out for fellow TAWers but didn't see any, not even Chris who we usually bump into, though did have a pleasant chat to Peggy at the bar. Really wish we could see them again on this tour, lucky you Chris!

I too was at the RFH on Tuesday and I'm about to commit heresy....

Overall, excellent.  Great sound - you could actually hear the words!  Not often that you can say that!  Good work from someone.

The "Dream Attic" songs are really strong - my wife came and wanted to know how come she knew all the songs even though she's only heard them once.  Shows how memorable they are.

"Take Care..." is my favourite song off the last album and "...Bright Lights..." is one of my Desert Island Discs, so I was loving the encores.

But.....too much screechy jazz-sax for my liking.  And I'd like the guitar histrionics cut down just a little - a 10-minute freak-out could be trimmed to 6 and we could have had another song.  Mind you, I always point this finger at Bruce and Neil too.  Maybe it's just me.

Sorry if it wasn't to your taste Keith but I'm with Dan on this one, Pete Zorn is a terrific player and I thought Richard and the band really rocked at the RFH on Tuesday eve.
I smiled when Richard introduced the band and listed the many instruments Pete was playing, adding " he plays them 'cos he can "

Round two at Salisbury City Hall tomorrow, can't wait.

A good gig at Cambridge last night but........(I'm sure I will be disbarred for this, or struck off for heresy too).... but I think I must be *allergic* to the sound of brass (sax etc). )

I know PZ is great, but for some reason 'brass' almost sets my teeth on edge, (always has, probably always will :-\) and last night it kept jolting me out of enjoying the rest of the music.  :-\ I found myself relaxing when he picked up a stringy thing.  ::)  Different tastes/different styles. ;)

Caught in the pedant trap!! Not knowing the tecchie details, I just looked at the fact that it was metal and shiny as were some of the other instruments, so made a quick generalisation........ :-[

Look forward to seeing you there Sandra, May I be so bold as to suggest a pre show pint in the Kings Head Inn (Wetherspoons)

For the benefit of anyone who might care to join us and doesn't know this establishment, walking from the gig towards central Salisbury, the pub is on the right hand side of the road adjacent to the river bridge and just as importantly, a mere stones throw from City Hall.

OK, agreed about the sound initially  ;)

We were in Row J downstairs.

Isn't it just amazing how he keeps coming up with new lyrical and musical ideas and keeping it fresh and unrepetitive?

Only listened to the album once before the concert, but the songs are almost without exception very strong and seemed familiar right off the bat.

I was overwhelmed to hear Wall of Death and Take Care the Road You Choose in the second half.

Glad you thought it well worth the trip - you came from a bit further afield than us!

I've often thought this about RT. So people slip into their dotage and quite happily go downhill very rapidly, others continue to recycle old stuff over and over, but Richard seems ever upwards.
Long my it continue.

I, too, thought the Bristol concert was phenomenally good (even if he did omit Crimescene!) particularly from my privileged 'row A' seat!

Superb guitar workouts on If love whispers your name and Can't win.  Excellent band enthusiasm and enjoyment throughout, particularly the rollicking Sydney Wells and the sublime Al Bowlly...  I don't think I've ever attended a concert where the time has slipped past so quickly.

And what a contrast with the previous RT concert I attended ... Nutmeg & Ginger at the Cadogan Hall in December.  How can OH slip so readily from Elizabethan broadsheet ballads on traditional instruments to a no-holes-barred rock show?  Incredible!

Simon.

Aplogies if this has been mentioned elsewhere but there is an excellent interview with RT in the current issue of Mojo from which I gleaned at least two interesting snippets.

1. His own favourite amongst his albums happens to be my favourite too: Mock Tudor

2. There will be a collection of his BBC sessions released sometime this year. Definitely looking forward to that.

Eight days until the Brighton gig. Can't wait.

Glasgow last night - absolutely magnificent.

No Crime Scene or Bad Again in the first half - the Dream Attic songs though are developing & maturing in performance - Demons in her Dancing Shoes, Big Sun & Sidney Wells particularly stood out for me.  And the whole of the second half was outstanding - I can't remember hearing him play the Angels Took My Racehorse Away live before & with the fiddle involved it was remarkably faithful to the original version on Henry the Human Fly.

Best of all the cameras were on hand & the whole show was filmed for posterity. ;D

Oxford was full last night too....we got an extra encore!

Hey Joe was yelled from the audience, and as RT doers often, tried to plasy a few chords before usually giving up.....but his band were quick off the mark leaving RT with a problem in how to get out of it....he sang a couple of verses before getting the band to a tight finish...

On really fine form at Oxford. Particularly enjoyed Michael Jerome on the drums, though the whole band was very tight. New album sounded even better than expected and particularly good to get some explanations.  I had been a bit confused by the line about polar bears in the desert!

From where I was sitting upstairs it sounded like Hey Joe was a response to RT mishearing a request for Persuasion which was called out. (After playing it he then said "no, we don't know that"!)

Title: Re: RTB "Dream Attics" UK tour dates.
Post by: Chris on January 31, 2011, 04:47:31 PM
Someone did shout for Hey Joe....but he then refused Persuasion, point blank - probably because the band (other than Pete Z) didn't know it - and the fact that he wanted to play the two encores that were on the set list.

A fork-bendingly brilliant evening at a sold-out Anvil in Basingstoke tonight. Dream Attic was played beautifully, the songs on the album, although originally recorded live, acted as templates for the band to stretch out on them live, particularly mellifluous fiddler Joel Zifkin. The only omission I can remember from the album was Here Comes Geordie.
After the interval came stunning versions of The Angels Took My Racehorse Away, One Door Opens, Al Bowlly's In Heaven (complete with an off-the-wall cymbal solo from the octopus-limbed Michael Jerome), Take Care The Road You Choose, and Can't Win.
The fret melting intensity of Can't Win must've ruptured the innards of RT's amp as his tech had to switch him over to a spare for a spontaneous version of Hey Joe (as detailed in previous posts, they managed about three minutes worth), Wall Of Death, Tear Stained Letter, concluding with Man In Need.
The band, also including the almighty Pete Zorn on at least seven instruments, enthusiastic and solid bass anchor Taras Prodaniuk, were probably one of the finest touring units I shall see this or any other year. And Richard himself, armed with a baby-blue Stratocaster, was effusive and enthusiastic about how well it all seemed to be going, even affectionately lampooning the demographic of the Basingstoke audience.
A fantastic night...long may he reign !

That second set....
usual first number about racehorses....
Can't Win - Christine Collister (CC)
One Door Opens - Judith Owen (JO)
Al Bowlly - CC
Never Give it up - just RT band
Wall of Death - sublime! with CC

Tear Stained Letter - CC, JO, Zac Hobbs (intro'd by RT as 'Jack', before correcting himself), 'Daughter-in-law Paulina (didn't catch her surname, no indication of who she's married to) & Kami Thompson. - really beutifully done.

No Hey Joe, standard two from set-list, then RT came back on with Kami and sung a wondrous Heart Needs a Home.

Very glad that I witnessed this..

Sounds wonderful. Is it slightly curmudgeonly of me to suggest that it might be better in future to miss the original London date and go for the extra one tacked on at the end of the tour? It seems to reward those who were too slow to get tickets the first time around.  Of course that plan would backfire when no extra date is added.

Me too, though surprised at number of empty seats in the back stalls. It was a great night, and good to see some of his family onstage as well -- Grandson Zac growing up fast, and Kami very affectionate with her dad. Sorry if this is drifting a little off topic but several years ago during the traditional post Cropredy cricket match, myself and others spent a large chunk of the afternoon, in the nets attempting to teach a very young Jack the art of bowling a cricket ball overarm. It was all to no avail however, for the all American boy it was more natural to pitch the ball baseball style. We must hope Richard, a keen cricketer himself has found time in the intervening years to teach his boy the finer points of the game.

off topic, but some want to know this

RT has only one kid, Jack, with Nancy, but his oldest son is named Jesse (read all about in the bio by Patrick Humphries :o)
Jesse lives in London nowadays (AFAIK) and is married to, you guessed it, Pauline

In the good old Cropredy fashion where it doesn't really matter if you can sing or not for the refrain of the last song, everybody can join in for TSL as well. And maybe Pauline is a wonderful singer.

I hope RT treats his family and takes them with him on next weeks journey to Europe
I would like to hear "A Heart Needs A Home" with Kami, if only because I will sing it myself next Friday on my son's Wedding Day  :)

What? No reviews of the last night of the tour in Brighton yesterday?

Well, here goes then. Actually everything that has been said before applies here except that I think we got a slightly shorter show for some reason. No Geordie. No Crimescene. No Bright Lights.

On the other hand I think a sort of end of term mood was prevailing. There was a lot of banter and on stage messing about. RT talked and joked extensively and we got absolutely incendiary performances of Sydney Wells and Can't Win.

Great night and none the worse for sticking to the electric template and missing out Vincent for once (though I might have preferred him to play Amongst the Gorse Amongst the Grey acoustically as I am not that keen on the band arrangement).

And that bass player is a one isn't he? I wonder if he can get England past Denmark next week?
