Title: 1000 years of RT in the UK next year?
Post by: ronnie on August 05, 2008, 02:02:28 PM
I've just noticed on Beesweb the RT date at the Barbican in January 2009. It's billed as 1000 years of Popular Music and is also listed on the Barbican's own site. Has anyone heard any news on a 1000 years UK tour?

I'd love to see the show but don't know if I can commit to a trip to London just now.

Thanks

ronnie

Oops - should have posted this when I bought my ticket....

I understand that it might turn into a short tour, but no guarantees..tickets are selling well, so don't hang around too long....

I've seen the 1000 years show twice and highly recommend it. It sounds like he hasn't done this in the UK before?? glad you folks will be getting a chance to see it. Amazing!

Yes he has.  he did it at Sadler's Wells a few years back.

He did two nights at Sadlers Wells on the back of the very first string of USA dates - I saw them both.

If you're expecting anything written by RT - you won't get it at this gig.

It does. I bought it last year at Cropredy, but was disappointed to find that I'd paid way over the odds for it in comparison to t'internet.  :(

On the other hand the DVD / CD were/are great! ;D

There are available:
A single CD.
A DVD and double CD.

I seem to recall that the first isn't a true subset of the second. I've enjoyed all the CDs, but haven't got round to watching much of the DVD. I'd love to see the show live.

I'd really like to see it but as my current contract expires in December I can't commit to the expense of a weekend in London. I'm going to hold off for something in Scotland.

From what I've read it sounds like a great evening's entertainment.

It's a great DVD - as my mate says, it's not one of those that you watch once and then forget about.  And the album was my pre-Cropredy listening last week.

Barbican tickets in the bag!  And there are loads left at present...

What about the Platform in Morecambe? Can't see it happening though! The Gregson Centre? ;)

Kendal would be nice, though.

Fairport have played at the Platform so I think RT plus the other two would fit on the stage unless he's recruited a dozen minstrels for the tour!

Another option would be the Hall at Lancaster university where SoH have played.

There must be a reasonable size venue in Preston - the Guildhall maybe? Never been to anything there but I see Swarb's Lazarus are playing there on the 3rd October.

Preston Guildhall is likely to hold sufficient punters, but the others aren't. RT tends to play larger venues than most of those FC plays.

You don't want to go to the Guildhall, either. The acoustics are absolutely awful.

I was of course joking about the Platform, and certainly about the Gregson Centre. I wonder about the Brewery in Kendal, though. The Malt Room, where FAC usually play, would of course be too small. The theatre, on the other hand, might not be a million miles off ....

Bridgwater Hall would do me nicely, though.

Well the full electric FC is playing there in March.  I'd much prefer the Malt to the theatre if I was still up there....

Quote
The set list varies from night to night, but has been known to start in the 13th century and move to medieval Italian ballads to selections from the songbooks of Gilbert & Sullivan, Stephen Foster, Ray Charles, Hank Williams, The Beatles, The Who, Squeeze, and Prince, all strung together by Richard's vocals, incomparable guitar playing and dry wit.

Not the Messiah, but a traditional carol. The lyrics to several versions are here (http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols/remember_o_thou_man.htm).

The previous number was opera - From Purcell's Dido and Aenaes.

Sorry to have missed you both Issi and Chris, but it was great to meet relative newcomer Dave, to whom many thanks for the ticket.

I managed to miss Colin as well - I remembered to take his phone number - but forgot my phone....

A great gig, although the first half has too many slow songs IMO. I get the impression they enjoy playing the rock and roll stuff the most.
RT was more voluable then usual, which was good because I enjoy his little jokes.

Note that 'Maneater' included a verse in Latin....

Excellent gig last night. One change in the set list was the inclusion of So Ben Mi Ca Bon Tempo. My favourites are still Trafalgar Square and Friday on My Mind but False Knight and See My Friends were other highlights. One punter shouted out for Vincent but maybe he was a Don McLean fan.  ::)

Sorry not to have made contact with any of you other good people. We were in the back row of the upper circle so by the time we'd queued for the loos and got an ice cream it was almost time to make our way back upstairs.

No complaints about the sound at the Lowry but we had to settle for sandwiches from the coffee bar as the terrace bar had stopped serving food at 6:30 which was a bit rubbish. The words piss-up and brewery spring to mind.

Really enjoyed the gig last night, though Mr Thompson dashed my hopes of a prog-rock section for the '70s and plumped for ABBA instead.  ::)

Loved the shout from the crowd of "Play something from the future" - Inspired!  ;D

Someone shouted that last night too at High Wycombe - a plant in the audience perhaps? or had someone been reading this and decided to have a go too?!!

Great gig by the way - loved the ladies accompanying too!

Here's the set-list from last night's gig at the London Barbican....

Hevene Queen
3 Ravens
So Ben
False Knight
Pipe Shepherds Pipe

Oh Jim, that stings! For the 90s were the years of my coming of age, the years when you think that you're discovering MUSIC write large, as nobody ever has done before. I wasn't a muso, it always makes me feel like a fraud to ape that role, but the Summer of Britpop (1995 - just after me and The Manc became acquainted) was my Summer of Love, and the soundtrack to it is associated in my mind with the incomparable sweetness of those months.

actually i regret that post more than most
from the 90's i liked , in no particular order and ill probably forget loads
james, oasis, the charlatans, the mondays, the inspiral carpets(can you spot a trend here ::))
and i realise that most of these started in the 80's
actually i spent moast of the 90's rediscovering bands like little feat and artists like Neil Young
because i couldnt find an awful lot of new stuff to groove along with or rock out to

Aye, the baggy trend was great, wasn't it? As for James, the '90s were for me bookended by "Born of Frustration"  - in 1990 played by my sister on a substandard ghetto-blaster and in 1999 whooped by me ("whoowhoowhoowhoowhoo-oo-hoooo!) while freewheeling down the hill to where I worked at the time. i had subsequent crushes on Tim Burgess out of the Charlatans and Tim Booth out of James, and had a bike called Timmy for some time named in honour of these two gentlemen . He was a good ride. Fnaar fnaar. - Oh, God, I'm supposed to be talking about music and I'm talking about a) sentimental value and b) sexual attractiveness.  Arguably not a mindset which is ideal for judging musicality... Thanks for giving me an excuse for some shameless nostalgia!

Love, Smiths

The truth is there was a lot of good music in the 90's you just may not have liked it which is another subject all together.

To get back on topic from the times I've seen the 1000 yrs show it at times looks like RT enjoys taking a back seat and letting Judith Owen take the limelight.

It is also the format I have enjoyed most of his recent shows as the sense of unpredictability is well and truly in place.

Was Richard on R4's arts review prog last night (after the Archers)? Someone at work said they caught a few seconds of a singer/guitarist covering a Britney Spears song... and I can't think of anyone else doing it.

Yes, given his shyness, I can well believe that. It sometimes makes me wonder why he never made more of an effort to get someone else in the band to be the "front" person ...

Agreed, though, based on reports I've heard, some audience members have been disappointed at the lack of RT hits in the encores.

We saw RT in Perth last night. The jokes were dreadful, the guitar playing delightful.

I thought the first half was brilliant and thought the second half marginally less interesting due to the familiarity of the material. The two ladies with him were excellent, especially Judith who sang many of the songs. She's a bit of a comedienne as well.

Highlights for me were Purcell's When I am Laid in Earth and the Abba song. A brilliant evening in store for you if you are catching this tour.

Yes, odd that.....it's clearly not billed as an RT gig.....what do they think the two girls would do if RT played 'his' hits. I certainly wasn't expecting any, and would have been extremely surprised if he had done - Meet on the Ledge (called fore at the Barbican) indeed....

She's married to Harry Shearer (Spinal Tap, and the folk equivalent - what was it called?), so no real surprise....

He did listen to one heckler and did an impromptu version of Bonny St Johnstone at the start of the encores due to the local reference.

Richard and Judith came out for a signing after the show and were happy to take time to talk to everyone. I'd bought a tshirt but got my ticket signed.

Yes, I would echo all of the praises above.  The Glasgow show was superb.  And, like you Ronnie, I thought Judith was excellent.

However, a word for Debra Dobkin too, I think.  What a fantastic, understated, appropriate kit she used - as well as being an excellent percussionist!

If it wasn't for Burns' Suppers, Celtic Connections, etc, I would have gone to Perth the following evening...

Agreed, the glasgow show was great. I did think that for the most part, the audience was quite subdued though. Any other RT gig i've been to, the audience has been much more alert and there's been much more interaction between them and him.

Really? anyway, she has considerable comedic talent. She really came into her own in the music-hall and Gilbert & Sullivan numbers.

I wonder if anyone's ever tried to ressurect music-hall in recent years? It sounds like the kind of thing someone might try at the Edinburgh Festival. You'd have to be prodigiously talented to make it work - it'd have to be like Private Eye set to music, or the songs off That Was the Week That Was.

Brighton last night. Absolutley brilliant. Interseting that Judith reflected the change of the seasons, as it were, with nothing more than a change of neckware, (ruff, scarf, necklace all apropriate to the era). Although Mrs S did see a touch of Elsa Lanchester.
When he announced the last number of the second half, I thought, 'that can't be right, they've only been on ten minutes' but it was an hour.
And no Brittney, I'm very glad to say. That joke's long dead.

I agree completely. A great night with highlights being a breathtaking Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime and a couple of Judith's vocal numbers. I hope these shows are being recorded for one of RTs "official bootlegss" as the set is significantly different to previous shows and there are a couple of these performances that I would really love to have.

One down side. I am never driving to Brighton for a gig again. £10.40 for parking. Ouch!

Yep, I was there too, though I just had a £1.50 bus fare home to worry about.  Was left wondering who else could possibly pull off a set ranging from 12th-century troubadour material to 21st century club anthems.  At least I assume "man eater" was a club anthem, I doubt if anyone in the audience had seen the inside of a club since they were called "discotheques".

Agree.  One that stood out for me was Dido's lament, aka When I Am Laid In Earth.  Also, RT singing Abba is something I neber thought I'd live to see.  I got the DVD/CD set of the recent San Francisco show, which is nice enough, but I'd rather have the current setlist.

I think you may have missed the point on this one, "Oops I did It Again" is a good song, especially when RT sings it. If he was going for joke songs surely he'd have chosen Lilly The Pink or the Ying Tong Song? I don't recall any other joke songs, just popular songs done in an RT kind of way, blinkin' brilliant in Bristol by the way.

The Dome was spot on - we even managed free parking just round the corner... (for future reference you get £7 parking up the road if you get your ticket stamped and don't stay all night) - and ABBA in its original venue WOW!
My only quibble was that whilst Judith has a fantastic voice, I wish she weren't quite so mannered with the early stuff, Dido's Lament is unbeatable done 'straight'.

Where? Pray tell!

I drove round and round looking for a spot without success. I have parked in front of the Komedia before now and there was space there  but it all says "Loading Only" and I'm not sure whether you are really allowed to stop there in the evening. There were no cars there when I went by.

I knew about the ticket validation thing but I couldn't be bothered to queue (lesson learned!). I didn't realise how expensive the car park was as there are no charges posted anywhere, which is very naughty in my view.

Last night at Salisbury City Hall we were treated to two hours of joyous fun interlaced with a pot pourri of excellent music.
Richard was sporting a huge smile on his face throughout the evening and was clearly having a lot of fun, therefore in turn so did his audience. The comic timing and musical interpretations by Judith Owen were a joy to behold, while Debra Dobkin's percussion and vocals was also mightily impressive.
Let's hope Richard brings this show back to our shores again very soon.

An added pleasure was meeting Malcolm and his companion before the show.

Thanks, Martin, good to see you again.

Hearing RT singing in Latin, Early Italian and Early French, and also singing from Gilbert & Sullivan made an evening I don't think I shall ever forget. I can't think of anyone else who could so expertly cover the vocal styles and accompaniments required by the range of songs he sang.  :)
