Title: Fairport by any other name...
Post by: ThomA on September 24, 2009, 12:53:08 PM
This is one for those who know their Fairport inside out, and apologies if it's come up before, but humour me if you will...

Anyway, I'm curious to know if there's any recordings made by any combination of musicians who've been in Fairport Convention, but have been released under another name, or to a solo artist?  For example, as I understand it, bits of Swarb's solo LPs Smiddyburn and Flittin' were recorded by the Full House lineup, or nearly the same lineup (with Petes Zorn & Thomas instead of Swarb) were the band for Hand Of Kindness.

The most obvious examples I can think of are Fotheringay (allowing for the fact that Pat Donaldson wasn't a member of Fairport, and the Fotheringay album predated Fairport membership for messrs Lucas Donahue and Conway - the latter by quite a while), and possibly some of the Albion Band?

Likewise, one could almost class the track If You Saw Thro' My Eyes as Fairport since it's got Ian and Sandy on it and that's it (I think).

Are there any more that I ought to check out?

Other than those you have mentioned, the first one that comes to mind is The Bones Of All Men by Phillip Pickett. The line up on that is Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, Dave Mattacks and of course Phillip Pickett (who had incidentally shared time in The Albion Band with some of the above).

Indeed The Albion Band's Rise Up Like The Sun album features Simon Nicol, Ashley Hutchings, Dave Mattacks & Ric Sanders amongst the band with, if I remember rightly, some backing vocals from Richard Thompson.

Shirley Collins' "No Roses" album featured huge chunks of Fairport... but then again it featured pretty much anyone who was anyone in folk at the time  :D

From Fairport the list includes Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Dave Mattacks.

Cheers

Nick

"Ribbon of Stainless Steel"

An album put out by Brian Maxine - British Wrestling Champion and DP's "muscle" in negotiating deals with automotive dealers! "His" band was:

Brian Maxine, vocals;
Sandy Denny, Linda Peters, backing vocals;
Dave Swarbrick, fiddle, mandolin, backing vocals;
Jerry Donahue, lead guitar;
Trevor Lucas, rhythm guitar, backing vocals;
Peter Willsher, steel guitar
Dave Pegg, bass guitar;
Reg Guest, Don Lowes, piano;
Harry Pitch, harmonica;
Dave Mattacks, drums;
Mark Loyd, percussion

It is truly bloody awful, but one no completist should be without.

I neglected to mention The Bunch, the first Matthews Southern Comfort LP and that Julie Covington album.

Any more?

Marc Ellington's album is Fairport heavy, augmented by most of the Flying Burrito Brothers.

The first Morris On record is Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, Dave Mattacks, with John Kirkpatrick and Barry Dransfield. Good record too.

Yowsah.  This sounds right up my street, like that Robert Palmer album that has Little Feat as his backing band.  What's the album called?

Al Stewart, Love Chronicles, has four Fairporters on it under pseudonyms.
Shelagh McDonald, Stargazer, two tracks with RT and DM
Stefan Grossman track 'Pretty Little Tune' features most of Fotheringay
Dudu Pukwana and Spear, 'Church Mouse', with RT and SN
Nick Drake, Bryter Later...

The list goes on. For this kind of thing the discography in Walter Heger's book is a work of truly Germanic scholarship. There's also a double CD called something like 'Loose Chippings from the FC Family Tree'.

Correction.  According to Wikipedia, Sneakin Sally Through The Alley was just Lowell George.  But the whole band sit in on his next LP Pressure Drop.

A number of Iain Matthews after MSC had loads of Fairporters on - Richard liked to use Groucho marx pseudonyms. For example If you Saw Through My Eyes and Tigers Will Survive.
Someone beat me to it with Love Chronicles which also included Jimmy Page.
A number of Sandy solo albums of course.
The GPs
Ralph McTell
Cat Stevens
Jethro Tull
Mrs Ackroyd
Richard Thompson solos

I suspect ThomA might have meant what's the Marc Ellington album called?!!  :D

I think it's called Rains/Reins of Change (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rains-Reins-Change-Marc-Ellington/dp/B0001ZXP2E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1253799865&sr=8-1)  ???
