I've already put this on another part of the Board, but people should be aware that Richard Thompson's official website is saying that Newsnight at 10.30pm tonight are doing a piece on Richard. As their cameras were seen at the Folk Awards the other night, presume this will also  include footage of Fairport at that ceremony, but may just be about RT. Said to be doing an interview with him as well.

Sorry folks. Suspect it was put back because of the news of that Sion Jenkins bloke and the outcome of his trial. Tonight's Newsnight might be a better bet, especially as it is on the same night as Folk Britannia is over on BBC4, and Friday usually has newsnight review, it's arts review bit. The RT website definetly said it was yesterday, (look at "catch of the day" to the left of his home page, after you put his name into "google"); no update on it this morning, though.

I particularly liked RTs interview with Prince Assan of Jordan - great duet on Sloth, Assan can really hit those power chords.

The folk prog clashes with an hour prog re Dark Side of the Moon on BBC2. I have only got one recorder!!! ;D

If, by "The folk prog", you mean Folk Britannia, that is repeated later in the night.

Edit: By an amazing leap if intuition Doc House diagnosed and saved the patient suffering from something improbable and deadly, while everybody else was hopelessly lost. Surely they would have learnt to just ask him in the first place.  He was also a bit grumpy. Colin, who has never seen the programme.

What was the name of the episode? Was it "Autopsy"?

I videoed it so I don't know which bit 10.30 was...but the guy refused to take the TB drugs to raise awareness of people in Africa not being able to afford them, but House worked out that TB wasn't the problem anyway, it was something to do with blood glucose which they found out by almost killing him but of course he then got better. Phew. Cameron didn't go off with him. And Wilson worked out that House hated the guy so much because he enjoyed his work. It wasn't a very good episode.

Let's hope there actually is something on Newsnight tonight!

Having felt like a stalker on this message board for several years I always determined to register when I had anything useful to say.  So my first post is to pass on a little information on the mythical RT Newsnight broadcast.

My man on the inside tells me that the feature has been put together by Robin Deneslow (of, I understand, the Electic Muse fame and a respected music and current affairs journalist).  What I am told is that the RT feature has now been scheduled for next Thursday, 23 February. 

Anyway, it feels nice to have come in from the cold.

We clocked Robin Denselow and the BBC cameras at RT's Cambridge show two weeks ago, so it isn't a rumour - question is when.

Confirmed on the RT website as Feb 23rd.

Nothing on any BBC channel on that night. Just Ripping Yarns on BBC4  :D

Oh, I see. It seems odd that Newsnight would be doing a feature on RT specifically rather than the Folk Awards in general, welcome as it is.

I realise I am appearing as a bit on a one issue wonder on this site but, my mate at the BBC, or "an informed source" as he/or she prefers to be called has just received an email from Newsnight which says that the Richard Thompson piece "should" be going out tonight…..note the caveat!  My mole had tried to establish whether any Fairport related material was involved in the broadcast but had not received any clear answer. 

So lets all hope that nothing news worthy happens today to cause it to be rescheduled.

I will now disappear into the background from whence I came.

My Mrs just came hurtling downstairs shouting something about Fairport being on telly, so I legged it into the front room, switched it on, and there! There they were!
Amazing! I didn't expect that! Maybe I should keep a closer eye on this forum in future!
5 minutes of unexpected telly tonight has been better than the rest of the rubbish I've seen this week put together!

When we're all stood out in the rain by the bar in that field lookin at Mark in his great green tent/cape and sippin a little chaser supplied by Frog we shall be able to say Gosh what trendies we are!!

Fascinating and sensitive piece, especially when you start comparing your own long hair from the 60's/70's to middle age wrinkles today; and that's about all me and RT may have in common, also wish I had some youthfull expertise to have been able to have figured how to have video taped that via a digi box. Sadly failed!

"trendy", I think we have always been trendy, it has just taken the rest of the nation a little while to realise it.

I thought the piece was excellent, although surprised by the omission of any reference to DM.  Where did the black and white footage of Full House line up come from?  Any ideas?

Still, it therefore appears that the BBC, at least in the form of Newsnight, did record both of Fairports songs at the folk awards.  I tried, via my "informed source" to blag a copy of the "BBC rushes" (the stuff they recorded but did not use in the article) out of the Newsnight team (well if you never ask in life..).  but was told they never release their rushes.  However, it would be a shame beyond compare if this footage of the 1969 Line up was lost.  I do not know if Simon etc have better contacts at the BBC but I would have thought it worth someone far more important than me trying to buy/blag a copy.  Only a thought anyway.

Cor --I just watched news night ----brilliant. I think I`ll call Cropredy  under its new title " THE MONSTERS OF FOLK " FESTIVAL this year .See you all at Knebworth  and Wembley Stadium (If ever they finish it) soon . I think I hear a steam train a comming and its called the Fairport Express.  [;-)

the "sir patrick spens" film came from some old bbc2 show that preceded the whistle test and i cant just think what it was called, disco 2?? how late it is ??

The Rolling Stones played to a million on CopaCabanna (however you ^-^ spell it) beach . Could Fairport play to the same  number on Skegness beach? . I`m off down the bookies  ;)

Wasn't it fantastic? I had tears in my eyes watching it... A really good well informed piece- just what you would expect from Newsnight but not what you would expect to be on about folk music... if you see what I mean :P

Disco 2 possibly. Was it presented by Melody Maker editor Richard Williams? I thought it a better programme than Whistle Test. I couldn't stand those old b&w films they ran over the music. There was also Late Night Line Up presented by Joan Bakewell. What else is in the vaults???

Well now we know the Folk Awards were being filmed after all!

That's about the 4th or 5th time in recent programmes that I've felt sorry for Our Norm, virtually ignored whilst RT's talents are sung (and if not him, Ashley's).

For the record, I think that Simon Nicol is a fine musician, singer and an all-round good egg (although not as round as me).

Agreed - a much underrated guitarist and a voice to die for.

And DM's name not even mentioned, Had somebody forgotten they had a drummer?

Thanks to all contributors to this thread for bringing the Newsnight item to my attention....I've just watched it from the Newsnight website and its a marvellous summary of Richard's place in the music world.

I'm a bit worried about all this "folk is trendy" business, mind!

It was good to see snippets from the 2xThompson's recent (current?) tour - I saw them in Bristol a couple of weeks ago.
Does anyone recognise the venu where they were filmed...it certainly wasn't the Colsoton Hall.

Think somebody said that the film crew was seen at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge; it also looked a bit like the Deco Theatre in Northampton where I saw them a few weeks ago; ( I'm sitting p---- of at computer writing this, as wife has hogged the main telly, the only one that gets BBC4, to watch some rubbish involving insignificant "celebreties" singing daft  pop songs in some sort of game show, while Folk Brittania concert is on BBC4....great).

Thanks so much for posting the Newsnight link - I have listened to radio programmes again, but had no idea you could do the same with some TV. It was rather fuzzy on my PC, but much better than not seeing it at all.

That's a Stephan Sobell bouzouki-guitar (or 'bouzar') that our Maart is also famous for playing. Very expensive and a long waiting list I'm afraid!

Gosh.  The Newsnight Tribute to Richard Thompson, Fairport and the Folk Revival of 2006 was nearly 14 minutes long.

There were snippets from:
* a live gig (Wall of Death, Vincent BL 1952)
* the RT documentary filmed in Californay-ay
* Matty and Meet on the Ledge from the Folk Awards
* Pieces to camera from outside Mr. Nicol's former abode, Fairport.
* RT at work on recording a film soundtrack
* Interviews with Joe Boyd, Martin Carthy and Swarb
* and an interview with the man himself.

A thorough and competent analysis of Fairport's significance and the development of RT, in the time available.

Well done Kirsty, Paxo and the rest of the Newsnight Team.
