Now that enough time has passed that I can write this without crying, have to mention the highly unusual timing of the playing of that song on Pandora radio this Sunday past as my phone rang pulling me out of the shower at 4.25 PM, with the news of the passing of my Mother at 4 PM. To be sure, other than its title it has nothing to do with my particular subject matter, and in my case it was imminently expected news, but as everyone who has gone over that bridge of life knows, it is also news that will bring you lower than likely you have ever been, although I know she was very much ready and completely at peace with leaving this world, as were her loved ones. In fact my Dad through tears was singing the old Irving Berlin song Always to her in her final minutes which is damn nearly the most beautiful notion to which I have ever been exposed, 61 yrs married. Just figured this was a forum where people are aware of the beautiful song Farewell, Farewell and could appreciate the utterly spooky timing of it, and the particular station I was playing it on has over 100 artists providing the potential prompts ,(if you don't know how Pandora works don't worry about it) which means not much comes up all that often, and beyond that it is a day that all who have ever been born must face, sometimes on the day they were born, so color me very grateful.

Many condolences to you and your family...... but very strange......
My Mother died three days before my birthday 6 years ago, the first present I received was Farewell Farewell. Up to that point I had not heard this song, or paid much attention to it so I put it on the player, suddenly the title and beautiful voice of Sandy became most haunting and meaningful. This song stays with me as very special indeed...
My thoughts are with you all.....farewell, farewell...

there's never a good time to die even when it is expected,the wifes dad died on the 10th november and we know the sort of thing youre going through

Thanks for sharing this with us, tullist. It's a pity that RT himself is ill at ease with the song ("rotten words, great tune" he told his biographer) when it's brought comfort to so many down the years, me included.
I read somewhere (can't remember where) that Dylan recorded "Farewell, Farewell" during the Self Portrait sessions. Can anyone confirm?
