Title: The Richard Thompson Juke Box
Post by: Andy on January 18, 2011, 11:08:48 AM
Prompted by a comment in the reviews of RT's latest tour, if he were to just turn up and play songs prompted by the audience, and you were there, what 5 tracks would you be most likely to call out?

For me, at this moment (but that can change within 60 seconds):

Vincent Black Lightning 1952 would be a necessity. All 152 verses please!
Beeswing, for it's bittersweet wonder
I want to see the Bright Lights tonight because I find it an evocative joy
Just The Motion because I need to be told not to worry so much
Meet On The Ledge because, well, just because.

I can't name 5 tracks as I am 'new' to RT's work  :o ::)

I would definitely want to hear Miss Patsy and Let it blow! as these are never off my player atm.

Now Be Thankful - the greatest secular hymn of all time
When I Get To The Border - for years this was the only RT song I knew
Vincent Black Lightning 1952 - it still gets me teary every time I hear it
Nobody's Wedding - a personal favourite from his much neglected debut
House Of Cards - a forgotten gem of a song, recently covered by Robert Plant

Tear-stained letter - to remember that lovely RT set at Cropredy when, by the time his encore came, it was absolutely P'ing with rain. He made some comment about 'go on, you start walking and I'll sing' - must be the only time he has played to 15,000 backs!!

Hard to choose just 5

I suppose you'd have to pick 1952 VBL, and if it was a band concert, 'Hard on me' would be a cert so he could let rip on the solo. I've always had a soft spot for 'End of the rainbow' as it's so damn miserable and perhaps 'Waltzing's for dreamers' and 'Cooksferry queen'? The last 2 would probably change if you asked me again tomorrow.

Having just listened to Ducknapped I want a time machine to go back to 2003!

As for a top 5, lemme see...

Cooksferry Queen
Jealous Words
Easy There Steady Now
Train Don't Leave
Don't Sit On My Jimmy Shands (with Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham!)

I have nearly shouted for TDL on a couple of occasions. I'd love to hear him play it live.

Night Comes In-Saw himself and Linda (with band) play this at one of the Lisdoonvarna festivals back in the Early Jurassic Period as the sun set-great memories

Dimming of the Day-My wife's favourite RT song

I want to see the bright lights tonight-One of the best ever going out songs

I think I have to revise my list in light of my thoughts today to include
"Oops I did it again"

Title: Re: The Richard Thompson Juke Box
Post by: ColinB on January 19, 2011, 05:12:32 PM
I was tempted to include the Janet Jackson song. Or My Daddy's a Mummy.

Thinking of such songs, the friend I went to The Lowry gig with wanted to hear Hot For The Smarts and asked if I had a copy of it which I don't. Does anyone know if it's been recorded and is it available anywhere?

Sorry, straying off topic there a bit!

The Beesweb Song-o-matic page (http://www.richardthompson-music.com/song_o_matic.asp?id=491) for the song does not list any recordings it appears on, only that it appears somewhere. The page with info on miscellaneous recordings (http://www.richardthompson-music.com/album.asp?id=48) lists some details but doesn't say which tracks appear where.

The only recording on the net that I know of is this Youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axa0_gh6NYk).

To be difficult, would depend if it was a solo/duo acoustic show or full electric, so here goes:

Acoustic:

Easy There Steady Now
Galway to Graceland
Dimming of the Day
I Misunderstood
Mystery Wind

Electric:

Gethsemane
Calvary Cross
Tear Stained Letter
Gypsy Love Songs
Shoot Out the Lights

Good man, he never plays that one. Even with persistant requests (well when he plays in the north east anyway).

Hmmm

Calvary Cross (c. 1975 Oxford Poly)
Bad News is all the Wind Can Carry (possibly the most desolate song ever!)
Farewell, Farewell (but how would it sound without Sandy?)
If Love Whispers Your Name (Dream Attic is the best RT album since I can remember)
Painted Ladies (RT does more with one shivering note than most guitarists do in a whole career)

A bit left field perhaps?

Actually I very nearly picked three of your five - I love Calvary Cross with its guitar workouts, and Painted Ladies is one of my favourite tracks from my favourite RT album.  And I love Bad News so much that I once attempted to sing it a capella at a folk club.  Boy, that's a dark song.  Powerful though.

A hard one...

Today's choice (and I think I'm assuming an acoustic concert here):

Missie How You Let Me Down
How Will I Ever Be Simple Again
A Heart Needs A Home
Galway To Graceland
Keep Your Distance

But there could be so many others, and an electric concert might have a very different choice

Think I'll have a bash at this.

1. 'When I Get To The Border'

The full band version with the mandolin/guitar trade-off licks in the end section. I've seen it played acoustically which was still great, but it's my list and I'm not going to be fobbed off with anything less than the real thing.

2. 'The Angels Took My Racehorse Away'

One of my top three RT songs and I finally got to see it played in Bristol last weekend. Would I like to see it again already? Yes. Yes I would.

3. 'The Calvary Cross'

When was the last time this was played? Anyone? I've certainly not been aware of it on any tour (from either personal experience or bootlegs/reviews) since I started attending shows, which was around 1993. It goes without saying that this will include a massive wig-out.

4. 'A Poisoned Heart and a Twisted Memory'

Sadly I'm too young to have seen the big band tours of the early-mid eighties, and Hand Of Kindness is one of my absolute favourite albums. This song ticks two boxes: it swings like a mother and also has a grin-inducingly tricky time signature. Mattacks/Nicol/Kirkpatrick et al will all be present and correct for this one, and they might even stay for the encore of 'Back Street Slide', although that obviously won't be included in the agreed five because it'll be purely their decision. Additionally, Simon Nicol will be wearing terrible clothing, probably a tartan jacket, and playing a guitar that looks like a Cornflakes box.

5. 'Never Again'

There has to be at least one acoustic number and tonight it's this one. The previous selections aren't quite as depressing as they could be, and this one should bring the mood down nicely. I've also never seen him play it.

Gosh you were brave taking on 'Bad News...'.  Apparently written for Jeannie Franklyn.  Impossible to limit this choice to 5 when a 'Best of' for RT would run to several discs.....

Ah, another one for Jeannie.  Yeah, I didn't do it justice to be honest.  Maybe next time.
