Title: Fairport in the Charts
Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on March 15, 2006, 08:01:57 PM
Here's a question?

When was the last time that a member of Fairport Convention was in both the Album and Singles top 10?

Would it have been Bruce Rowland drumming with Bill Wyman?

Or Ric Sanders with All About Eve?

Gerry played on Richard Ashcroft's new album.  Do I win?

Yes, but that's not the point.
These days it's almost impossible to come up with a question that can't be Googled. This was a very obscure fact and fun would have been had when I reveled that it was in the charts this year. If you just happen to know the answer, you could have claimed your prize by sending me an IM.

So what was the point then Colin?

Jackdaw  ???

Um, how do you know he answered the question via Google? ???

Um, how do you know he answered the question via Google? ???

I don't think he did.
My point is that it's almost impossible to think of a question that a Fairport anorak will not know the answer to immediately, or can't be found on Google within seconds. So to make an interresting topic there really has to be a bit of 'playing along'.

Sorry if I was a bit abrupt with Andrew.

I know what you mean, Colin. I knew the answer but left it to see what guesses etc would be thrown into the mix. I was going to post a mini-teaser this morning "Animal, vegetable or mineral?" (Animal....geddit?  ;D). Suppose you can't blame the lad for answering though....  :)

Oops sorry.  I didn't really want a prize.  Just knew the answer, that's all.  (didn't even have to google it).  I thought that was the idea of the post.  Sorry to spoil the fun.

You're very welcome Andrew - us more experienced Talkawhilers obviously have a direct link to Colin's brain so know the answers anyway, so we can forgive you  ;)

Please don't go away - we are normally nice.

I'm intrigued. Have any Fairport tracks been sampled & appeared in albums by "new" artists ???  Can't imagine a hip hop version of Sir B, but then you never do know............

Groove Armada (I think) did a track based around samples from 'Autopsy' last year or the year before.

Alright, clever Googler's - who was the last member of Fairport Convention to win an award for "Best World Music" album and for which album?
The winner wins the right to ask the next obscure question.

Only a guess, no Google or books honest, Dan ar Braz? If that bit is right, it must be something to do with Heritage des Celtes or Excalibur.

Very good - Dan ar Braz live version of Heritage des Celts won the Victoires de la Musique award for Best World Music Album - and a brilliant album it is too.
