Hmmm, is Festival Bell worse than that Uke thing? Festival Bell I think, by a short head.

Wrong

Travelling By Steam

What is it with people not liking this song?  It was one of my candidates for a favourite song by a non-member!

It's great. It's actually folk-rocky, unlike so much of FC's stuff since Maart left. And I love the story behind its being written.

No, it is not rocky. It is jaunty and jauntiness spells death to credibility in music.

Shame because I love Huw Williams writing but I would much rather hear him & Tony perform it without the schmaltz.

What's something like Walk Awhile or How Many Times if not jaunty?

And I don't see a connection between jauntiness and lack of credibility. Tweeness, yes, and we know where maximum twee can be found...

Love on a Farmboy's Wages.

What on earth possessed them to cover that XTC song? Sorry, but it has me hitting the FF button every time.

It is not a terrible cover though, just a bit pointless.

No, I have to disagree with you there Gub. I've just listened to the XTC original and have remembered that I do actually quite like it. Not my fave XTC song but still pretty good. But Ric's fiddle playing on the FC version ruins it and it doesn't suit Simon's voice. Just my opinion.

It's not particularly good, it brings nothing to the song, the fast bits of the vocal are too fast for Simon. The nice thing is that it reminds us of the common factor between Fairport and XTC, the legend that is Dave Mattacks.

I can't remember the name " Diamonds and Gold" maybe, I'm still caring for my mom so can't look through my music shelf. A friend calls it "Fairport Soft Porn"....about the young lady who gets a real wake-up call when she leaves home after being a spoiled daddy's girl.

'White Dress' .

I guess i'm just not a romantic.

And I like 'Mr Lacey'.  Maybe the problem is it comes hard on the heels of the lilting beauty of 'Fotheringay'
