Post by: Pugwash on April 24, 2006, 11:10:13 PM
Now then m'dears the old Fairport 78's is wearin out an the lads bein a bit lucky like on the last trip is investigatin in a 3PM player.

They've heard you can add tracks off any album an so want to create a Fairport at Sea selection to listen while takin tea and suchlike in the afternoon at 3pm.

So far they've demanded Sir Patrick Spens and Lorra Rooks can you suggest some more for 'em they're gettin meaner by the hour... I fear for me safety unless they get their demands... help..

the ones up above, especially the spanish main
General Taylor
The banks of the sweet primroses
Bonny bunch of roses

all kind of mention seafaring ways.

Steeleye span have a few seafaring songs. Plus Whalers dues by tull, Calypso by Denver, The wreck by Gentle Giant.
Also The Ian Cambell folk group has Swarb singing some fantastic seafaring songs. Also A.L.Lloyd has a bunch of good ones.

If connections are permitted - Sandy's "The North Star Grassman And The Ravens" would seem a sea-going essential.

The Islands.

Almost there (OK so some one will say that was ice, but there was water underneath!)

No raunch but Honour and Praise does have the ship sinking which may not bode well for any voyage.

What about Sir Patrick Spence, he was a sea captain. Or as it a bit long for the player  ;D

Paul

In Sir Patrick Spence I clean forgot the forty second verse, so I sang the twenty seventh twice as loud and in reverse, and no one noticed.

Yes there's hope for a gig on the poop deck yet  ;D

I travel over the sea and ride the rolling sky,
For thats the way it is, that is my fortune.
There are many ears to please, many peoples love to try,
And everydays begun rising for the moon.

Has anyone mentioned that one?

SIR WILLIAM GOWER
I am a sailor, both stout and strong
To a goodly vessel I do belong
Well guard and anchored and well equipped
Sir William Gower and a very fine ship

Our captain in his cabin lay
When a dreadful voice to him did say
"This night with me in the deep you'll be
So prepare yourself and your company"

The sky grew dark and the sea grew still
Though the men were fearful and the air was chill
Sir William rose to meet his men
Saying "Hear me now for I'll not speak again"

"I loved my mother when she was alive
And to my sister I gave babies five
I killed my wife and her children three
So I now must face what has come for me"

"You'll lash a timber close to my side
And throw me out on the water wide
And if I swim then let me be
But if I sink them pray for me"

So we tied his head and we tied his feet
And around his middle a winding sheet
At every knot the sea did stir
Grew ready for the murderer

And then we saw his open grave
The likeness of a single wave
That swept our ship from her stern to her bow
And bore away Sir William Gower
