Title: "All star band" for "No Roses" ??
Post by: StephenGiles on July 01, 2015, 07:04:14 PM
Is there any speculation as to who will make up John Kirkpatrick's "All Star Band" to perform the "No Roses" album at Shirley Collins' 80th celebration this coming Sunday?

Richard and Simon and DM would be good for starters!  Barry Dransfield also.

I'd put my money on Graeme Taylor, Paul Burgess and Michael Gregory who were all in the JK Band.

Even more gutted now.  I won't even be that far way, but I'll be attending something else.

I wish we could get there to see it - we were at the Southbank for the Easter outside performance from The Mysteries in 2000. Sadly the radio mics did not work well for the actors, but Home Service were majestic and LOUD!!!

Olivia Chaney, Lisa Knapp, JK and the male and female morris dancers were magnificent beyond the call of duty. The QE Hall sound was excellent.

I remember seeing the Albion Band with John Maxwell on "percussion" in 1982 - Trembling Bells provided a similar experience with it's drummer, which I'm not entirely sure was a good substitute for DM's crisp playing on "No Roses"!  ::)

That said, I cannot praise enough the kindness of the member of staff who helped my disabled wife when we arrived.

It was also a pleasure to meet and talk to Olivia Chaney for a few minutes when we arrived. such a lovely lady.

A pretty special night, I thought. Here's Robin Denselow's Guardian review: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/jul/06/all-in-the-downs-review-a-memorable-shirley-collins-celebration

Very good review - the only thing I can add from talking to those that attended was that Shirley did sing, on her own, a couple of her songs at an afternoon chat with Stewart Lee in the Purcell Room next door to the evening venue. Unfortunately, I heard about this too late to reorganise my weekend, but I wish I had been able to be there.

Lastly, a snap that Trembling Bells tweeted of the rehearsals....

It'd be great if that chat found its way onto YouTube.

Nice piece (despite the shocking misplaced apostrophe in the final sentence).

Not sure whether there were cameras present at the chat - but there were 3 fixed at the evening show, all level with the sound guy. Whether there is a DVD to follow, or was just as a momento for Shirley & family, we'll have to wait & see.

I suspect there will be snippets included in the film underway on Shirley that was crowdfunded

Yes, there was a fixed video camera no more than 15 feet away from our seats in row AA.

As this was an event to celebrate her 80th birthday, did none of the original musicians who played on the album wanted to partake?

I think RT is currently on tour in the US.

I'm ever hopeful that something may emerge with RT, AH, SN & DM with perhaps the wonderful Olivia Chaney and Lisa Knapp reprising their vocal/fiddle/harmonium duties.  ;)

Cropredy 2016 perhaps?

I'm not sure that having Ashley around would be all that great for Shirley tbh.

The afternoon 'in conversation' was riveting.  I enjoyed it more than the concert.

Low point for me was the interminable anecdote from a certain young man, which resulted in Alasdair Roberts and John Kirkpatrick doing only one song each in the first half.  Stewart Lee's "It's a pity"  spoke volumes.

PS It took me a while to find this thread. Never thought to look in Fairport Convention  :)

Sam Lee.

Spent a whole 15 minutes introducing his song, which went for nearly 10 mins!

But not really his fault - there didn't appear to be any stage management (Stewart Lee was MC, but he hardly knows stage management) & I doubted SL knew how lon he had been allotted (10 mins each/2 songs it seemed to be)

11 minutes and 30 seconds to be exact, to say nothing of the amount of time spent enduring endless absolute drivel from the so called "comedian" Stewart Lee >:(

I have a friend who went, and is quite a fan of Lee (as am I) who almost agreed.  A pity.

My programme and vinyl appeared just now (very well packed - thank you Fledg'ling)...very nice indeed.

Is it likely that Suff will put out any footage/audio from the concert?

Title: Re: "All star band" for "No Roses" ??

Probably depends on Shirley & Family....and the gig backers who I think were connected with the film being prepared of Shirley's life. It may all go into that

This doesn't help understanding why there were camera's about though

Had an opportunity to play the vinyl this morning - I could not believe it's the same two short songs on both sides, with one side having banjo at very low level in the background, and this is supposed to be an EP ::) ::)
I would have expected at least 10 minutes on each side - a total rip off Mr Suff!
