Plant!  Why Plant?  There are so many others who could play wide on the left - Allcock, Sanders, Leslie, Ar Braz to mention but a few.

Let's see Christine Collister in the line up, either as a singer with Fairport, as a solo turn, or with the Dave Kelly Band.

Much as I dislike cheering anyone from Manchester who wears red on a regular basis, we have to have Maart powering through stage right.

I can just see Jude in the Peter Crouch position.  ;D

I'd like the Fairport's show in three parts:

Thursday - really early stuff with someone good to do the Sandy bits,

Friday - A Swarbrick-related extravaganza,

Saturday - Newer post Swarb stuff (the time I got into Fairport, funnily enough, was a Steeleye girl, then someone said "If you like them, you'll LOVE these..."

Sat nite could be allsorts, starting at 8pm please.

Thank you.

That's all.

X

How about one of the days being "related projects"?  Swarb and Carthy; RT Band; Iain Matthews Plainsong; Jethro Tull featuring Pegg/Allcock/Sanders. You know the kind of thing.

"Liege and Lief" please and how about a set featuring the various Fairporters with Albion Band line ups - imagine seeing Julie While or someone similar fronting the band doing the Red Barn Murder etc.

Some of the first album with the surviving members would be great too..

Lets hope that there will be no flight restrictions etc across the Atlantic come 2007.

Very good ideas. Sound appealing to me.

Thursday:   old stuff or lets rather call it `youth stuff`with everybody avaliable from that time
Friday:   related projects (in that context. saw Jethro Tull a few months back: far from retired or decrepit. Sure worth a trial
Saturday:   current line up with guests like Christy Moore, Kate Bush, and how about a slot for Beausoleil or the likes ?

I'm not sure about the full-on Marillion show, might be a bit too loud for some sensitive souls ;), but the acoustic version would fit in rather well, probably about 5:00pm on Saturday afternoon.

I'm hoping that the "Liege and Lief" line-up who appeared at the Radio 2 Folk Awards will make a showing at some point.

A complete performance of Babbacombe Lee would be a nice one off. (possibly with some added RT or JD guitar)

At this rate Fairport in one guise or another could be playing non stop for 3 days though.

And how about those Leatherat guys to wake everyone up on Friday lunch time?

no marillion, there must be cheaper genesis tribute bands(although i dont want any of them either)

Only someone who hasn't heard a note that Marillion have made in the last 17 years could possibly state that.  Since Fish left in the late 80's the Steve Hogarth band are a completely different beast indeed.  And a very very fine one indeed.  But still thoroughly inappropriate for Cropredy...so I guess we do agree, but for different reasons ;-)

In any case, with the original (well not original but classic) Genesis lined up for Glastonbury I imagine Genesis fans will be well catered for in 2007....

My pleas for 2007: 1) Railroad Earth.... (check 'em out...great band)...2) Iain Matthews....doing exactly whatever he feels like doing! 3) an old school Richard Thompson Band set (you know...Simon, DM, Peggy, Gregson & Collister, Calvery Cross....etc etc!!) 4) a Full House set (but who does Swarb's vocals...Ummmm?) 5) and (this might upset some) NOT TOO MUCH messing about with Sandy tribute vocalists please...I can't bear it.  WKWTTG and a couple of others if you must, but just stick the box-set on in between sets and we'll all remember just how completely unique she was anyway....  And finally, the easiest to set up which is of course an entire day set aside as a special Jude sub-festival....We'll have Trader Horne sets, Giles Giles & Fripp sets (that should be easy to sort - anyone volunteer stopping people 'flashing' so Robert will actually get on a British stage!), perhaps a Librarian set (Jude wanders around shelving and shouting 'shhhhhh' loudly every so often) and finally a complete performance of the first Fairport album plus Ribbon Bow...  Now, that would do me just fine...  ;D  ;D

Excellent idea.... are you smoking a new brand? Lovely suggestion abour Plainsong... why not? Andy and iuain coulkd get another coupla types to do the biz.... god the original Plainsong were bloody good... LSE in 1972.... great! You can go whistle for Tull... while there have been stylistic overlaps over the years Tull have traditionally (ironic usage there) been too raucous... Swarb and Carthy would be the real treat here... they were so good together. Be nice to see Simes reunited in the great duo with Swarb too... (have you heard the one about the gynecologist ... etc etc... A "Bunch" like Rock'n Roll bit? I loved Richard Thompson's version of the fantastic Dion's "My Girl In The Month of May"... HELL WHY NOT INVITE DION?  Now that WOULD be something... What about it???

And anyway all this was way before 1977! He He He  ;D

             4-4-2
                                                          Mattacks

                                  Matthews     Hutchings    Nicol     Swarbrick

Female Voicalist Au Choix     Conway       Peggy    Plant

                                               Thompson      Donahue

What we need here is an opposing team:

Obviously we'll have MacGowan in goal and Bragg would play mid-field to support the strikers. Stewart in defence.

So who else? (Who have surprisingly never played at Cropredy)

Now let's not cause divisions - John Martyn solo on Friday night followed by Mostly Autumn just to get everyone singing along :D

Judging by the number of people singing along on Friday night, JM can do that himself!

What happened to a band called "Tarras"? I have two CDs by them - they're both excellent. They'd be good Cropredy material.

Karine Polwart and Juliet Turner are both pretty good, as is a girl called Hayley Hutchinson.

If they want to follow up 10cc, there's two versions of the Rubettes to choose from...

I don't think Tarras exists anymore, unfortunately.  I saw Ben Murray and Rosie Doonan as a duo a few months ago at Dartford.  John (can't remember his surname) also formerly of Tarras joined them for a couple of songs.  They were very good.

I'll second a vote for Karine Polwart - I think she would be well received.

Unfortunately, having got them to pay £80 a ticket to see Horslips, I reckon they may just want to get their value for money & stick around (either in the campsite getting bored & p*ssed) or on the arena field (getting bored & p*ssed).

Better on Friday night & then they may only be a problem on the Saturday, rather than all weekend. But for this reason, I can't see it happening - I think they're *too* popular for Cropredy's size.

Yes, Jim - that CD.

Horslips to sell out Cropredy on their own! Please explain? Whilst I quite like them I've never even considered them a second division band even on the basis of record sales,  popularity or press coverage. Where are the extra 24,000 going to come from?
Moving Hearts I would dearly love to see but it would be tempting fate to ask them to play The Storm particularly if the rain god is on site!

Simple.  Horslips is a legendary band who, if and when it decided to tour the UK, will easily sell out where-ever it plays.  Such is the nature of legendary bands.

I did say the "original" Moving Hearts .... so "The Storm" would not be a risk!

But I bet a large percentage of Horslips UK fans are also Fairport fans, so the increase in numbers wouldn't necessarily be huge.

Any Tullie should have ceased to give a TOSS what the world thinks of them along about 1973 and the knowingly debased Passion Play. But those New York Dolls were great and memorable fun weren't they. I'm afraid IA has probably come to the conclusion that Cropredy is not a welcoming avenue for their sort, much as he hold's the Fairport's and their music, history in the deepest regard. I can tell you five bleedin Yanks who would surprise and entertain most, CJ Chenier and his Red Hot Louisiana Band, (Son of the inventor of zydedo music, Clifton and the current highest practitioner of that most dancable of forms), Terrence Simien and the Mallet Playboys who would run a very close second, Dave Alvin, roadhouse music doesn't come any better defined, Bob Weir's Ratdog who have grown some mighty sharp teeth, and his longtime buddies and constant jewel's Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady usually known as Hot Tuna. And dare I add the Art Ensemble of Chicago. It's only magic filed under jazz after all. Cold black cats in policeman's hat's, nosing where the mice have been. Sorry Ian

But back to the Irish.
Already mentioned Christy Moore, (btw, brilliant idea wit Moving Hearts ) how about Chieftains ?
and - closer to FC
how about Dan Ar Braz and his Celtic project on Thursday evening ? With Excalibur II coming sometime later this year, this would make a nice place for for Simon, Peggy and Gerry to appear onThursday.

Shows of Hands, Little Johnny England and ColvinQuarmby, for the "old-hands".

So I was told yesterday, by a man walking his dogs, The Mighty Firebirds are already booked for 2007.

Now I haven't gone back through the 97 odd volumes of this thread - so if my suggestions are repeats - just ignore it - you lot usually do anyway ( maybe it's the accent..)

Waterboys - a must for the Friday night, but only if Mike has stopped looking up his own ar*e and has gone Celtic again.

Hayseed Dixie - that middle of sat afternoon slot when we need a lift.

John Martyn again - and 2008, and 2009

john Kirkpatrick

The Pipes and Drums of the Field Marshall Montgomery Memorial pipe band - well., they're a hell of a sight better than King Digestive

The Papa George band

Yes - Thursday night headline

And beer at the same price it was 40 years ago...........................

Friday Night - John Tams and Barry Moore (saw them at Cambridge this year and liked what I heard)

Saturday - Hayseed Dixie, The Big Yin (but would he stoop to our level)  ??? and Fairport doing there personal favorite tracks.

and please no Ralph McTell IMHO great song writer, but could leave the singing to others.

To throw some laid-back, BRITISH, blues into the works: Eddie Martin.

To fill the 'Who He?' slot: Jinder.  Absolutely mind-blowing (in my case, just a small explosion) talent in the form of a Fine Young Man from the south-west. (He used to live near Cropredy and the sounds he heard then helped to develop his musical interests.)

Friday night headliners: Dixie Chicks!!!!!!  Yeeeeeeee-harrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!  Failing that, La Bottaine Souriante.

Friday Night - John Tams and Barry Moore (saw them at Cambridge this year and liked what I heard)

Do you mean Barry Coope? If not, who is Barry Moore? :-)

Waterboys - a must for the Friday night, but only if Mike has stopped looking up his own ar*e and has gone Celtic again.

Not sure if he has,m, unfortunately - but they get a vote from my better half!

Quote
The Papa George band

Are they still together? Bloody good band in the past (Blues / RnB) but I thought he was solo these days?

Vot against for Yes - sorry, they'd bore most to tears these days.

How about this then?

Thursday night - Old Crow Medicine Show or KT Tunstall

Friday Night - John Tams and Barry Moore (saw them at Cambridge this year and liked what I heard)

Saturday - Hayseed Dixie, The Big Yin (but would he stoop to our level)  ??? and Fairport doing there personal favorite tracks.

and please no Ralph McTell IMHO great song writer, but could leave the singing to others.

The Big Yin himself turned up to tell a half hours worth of jokes before FC took the stage on the Saturday night in around 1987 or 1988.

Remember it well !

 :)

I'm sure he would come back if invited !

How about Ed Alleyne-Johnson ??

A one-man electric orchestra (with just one electric violin, no overdubs, or second takes !!).

Double CD 'Echoes' has all the great rock covers. Check it out on www.muntfish.com/alleyne-johnson/echoes.php (http://www.muntfish.com/alleyne-johnson/echoes.php)

Available for £9.99 from CD101.com

Good call, but not sure a one-man instrumental set is ideal for a festival. He has said he'd like to play.
There was a thread on him some time in the last year. The last I saw him he was busking in Bold St, Liverpool and that was a couple of years ago.
Hang on, there's video of him busking in Chester on youtube but you probably already knew that!

So no Excalibur II....?

PL - where did you get that info from? Tony - do you know anything?

Chris

well, maybe I was assuming/hoping for too much.
In this year`s programme booklet Peggy wrote

"I`m writing these words on the terrace of Martin Barre`s Presshouse Studio.
Simon, Gerry and myself are down here in glorious Devon, working on the follow-up project to Excalibur, which the French producer Alan Simon is putting together.
It`s going really well, so look out for it`s Nov 155th release on EMI."

and then in Gerry`s bit on could read
"Here is the news: Simon, Peggy and myself have just returned from Presshouse Studios in Devon after recording 8 tracks  for the Excalibur 2 project, one with Jacqui McShee
.....
and we are looking forward to going to the Midem festival in Cannes next January 2007 to preview the new show"

So at least this looks like a new CD, not sure about any DVD plans.

Well, so there^s still hope I guess.
If not the L`Heritage Des Celts line up we might have a homeopathic version of it on Thursday night, Dan AR Braz, Jacqui McShee the chaps,  and one or two others.

At the very least, it is a reason to be looking forward to Nov.

Cheers
Peter

Not a bad idea, but, PLEASE, not Jethro Tull again. I love their music, but their live performances are just so.....whats the word?.........decrepit these days

Sad but true. I've seen Tull numerous more times than I care to remember, but the songs they played at Cropredy '04 with the current line-up were a big disappointment. Dare I say, lifeless and bland?

As everyone else seems to be having a go:

Thursday:
Nic Jones (he might be persuaded, he's got a new CD coming out)
Savoy Brown (with excellent guitarist Kim Simmonds - yes they are still going)
Bagad Kemper (in the absence of Heritage des Celtes the next best thing)
Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation (saw them in Bordeaux and they were brilliant)

Friday:
John Tams
Mara! (last at Cropredy in 1987, so a 20th anniversary appearance)
Steve Gibbons Band (not the Dylan Project, but the original SGB, who were great live)
Richard Thompson Band

Saturday:
Pentangle (fully re-formed)
Richie Havens (would be great to see live)
Bellowhead
Fairport Convention.

The great thing is that this line-up could actually happen!
I have already bought a lottery ticket for Saturday, so could be on the 'phone to agents Monday morning.  :) :) :)

Headlines: Runrig, Waterboys, Levellers (here we go again...), umm - you'd need a 4-day festival mind...

Others I'd like to see wherever/whenever...
Isambarde; Kate Rusby; Nickel Creek; Capercaillie; Christy Moore - not seen him live and just discovering his poetry; wouldn't mind Tull back, but it may be a bit soon; June Tabor?  Only know one song but that's pretty good; Dixie Chicks; Hayseed Dixie; too many more to even remember...

I'm outstandingly jealous that you saw Leo Kottke. He never seems to tour outside the US (although he tours pretty much constantly over there) He was responsible for me learning to play guitar and has had a massive influence on my playing. I played Stealing and Fisherman at a local open mic night a few months back and it went down a storm. If you ever hear of him playing over here (or in Europe) please let me know - I'd be heartbroken to hear that he'd played here and I'd missed him.

Doc Watson and Leon Hunt - If only, indeed!

Tommy Emmanuel and Buster B Jones are two others I would love to see a Cropredy. There's always the chance that Tommy would play - His daughter lives over here and he spends a lot of time in the UK. I don't think I've ever seen a performer enjoy himself onstage quite as much as him.

Time to bombard Peggy with requests methinks! ;)

Tim Van Eyken's CD is excellent (As I have already said) and with Oliver Knight on guitar it has that rocking edge some of us crave!

Sandalfoot, I also have a weakness for Blackmore's Night, despite the fact that they occassionally slip into (unintentional?) parody and end up sounding like Balkan Eurovision entries of yesteryear. I imagine they would be too expensive for Cropredy though. Since I saw them a few years back (in Reading Town Hall!) they seem to play only in German castles. Start building the backdrop now...

Bellowhead were excellent at WOMAD this year. Not sure about some of their material, but they are very entertaining.

As you say, almost certainly too erxpensive for Cropredy.

In terms of "younger" artists, Can I suggest the Peatbog Faeries, an excellent mix of scottish folk with a cracking rythm section!

I agree on the idea of having a set each day...each with 'special' guests.. and while i'm on the fantasy thread, i'd personally love to hear Judy,Christine, and Vikki all together, imagine... a monster version of 'Sloth' with Richard flaying the fretboard !  8)

Wainwrights Rufus, Martha and Loudon
Earl Okin
Family Mahone
Bellowhead
and Fairport featuring mamajude

all at the same time, with the Irish dancing girls, and giant wooden emu puppets, and free beer for anyone wearing a fez/tiara, and wall-to-wall sunshine, and if Rufus wanted to crowd surf in the noddy then that would be fine too

let's make it happen people

The SPOOKEY MENS CHORALE  I saw these guys four times at Towersey and they are extremeley talanted and excruciatingly funny in a testosterone loaded way...line from one of their songs..

" We are the spooky men
                We dream of mastadons
                Practice mysterious handshakes
And we can grow beards if we want to.."

Another of their songs titled "Don't stand between a man and his Tool" reminded me so much of Cocker and his shed.  Check them out at
                 www.spookymen.com

Cave.

Mr Care generally seems to be in the vicinity on Cropredy weekends, Mr Fletcher similarly and if they we able to join the band we would be in for a real treat.

The band  are regularly seen on festival stages around the country and their Kick-Up-The-Pants style would be enjoyed by many I reckon.

Steve Earle & the Dukes

Absolutely.  I'm just listening to a recording of Steve & The Bluegrass Dukes (feat Pete Rowan on a couple of tracks) from a festival in Denmark last weekend and they are SUPERB.  Would work well at Cropredy.

Interesting to see Donna the Buffalo in there...  Personally I'd love to see one of the bluegrass (detect a theme here anyone?!) influenced Jam Bands up there - String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band or my current fave, Railroad Earth.....

you lot seem awfully keen on folk
if i'm to go then i wat a fair bit of rock
something with a bit of zing, crowd pleasers, a good show and no prog(remember Moistly Awful)
dr feelgood and cheap trick would be nice you can have a couple of folkies in order to get to the bogs and the bar
i wouldnt mind a bit of bluegrass though , how about the Del McCoury band or is it the bluegrass season in the states about that time?
feeder are good, they would do a decent turn

Hayseed Dixie cover both the bluegrass & the rock requirement - So bring 'em on!

I thought Shameless Quo were great as the Friday openers this year, so on a similar theme how about getting the fantastic Limehouse Lizzy to kick-off Friday's proceedings.  (They even 'do' a slightly folkie song in 'Black Rose').

byw did shameless quo do "Roadhouse blues" complete with jigging interval as quo used(still do?) to do it
a bit of heavy rockin' jiggery always goes down well

I've just recovered from the Ross Cider Festval.

One of the bands they had was The Blackfoots - an English version of Hayseed Dixie. I thought they were great - but had already had one or two ciders by then ;)

Great versions of Don't Cha by the Pussycat Dolls & Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols.

Have a look at http://www.theblackfoots.co.uk/

An idea for the "novelty act" spot??  Probably cheaper than Hayseed Dixie as well!!

However they should take Friday evening for a stroll through Ashley's influence on folk rock, now that would be something to see.

Nope - Jerry was actually playing as the guitarist in BB&THC.  It seems a bit of a bizarre mix to me, but anyway...Unfortunately I didn't get to see them but a friend did and took some photos.  He's semi-pro ish so I just need to check he's ok about having them up here, but if he is I'll upload a couple of Jerry and Big Brother in Leeds.

Right then,
I can't be ars*d to trawl throught all of the previous posts - sorry all. And I *KNOW* this lot will have been proposed already so I apologise for repeating them but I dont apologise for being the first MikeC to propose them  :D ;D

So can we PLEASE have Helen, James, Shane, the twins  ;) ;) ;) and the rest of the Blue house  (and whoever plays with them in Aug 2007)

Well, we are looking for *proper groups* next year aren't we?

Last weekend I went to the 'Off the Tracks' Festival which takes place near Castle Donington, Derbyshire. I saw a great band perform called David Longdon and the Magic Club. I thinkthey are really worth considering for Cropredy 2007, I believe David had performed at this years Shrewsbury Folk Festival also.

suggested bands:

Horslips
Chieftains
Dubliners (easily the best band I have ever saw at Cropredy)
Levellers or Drunk In Public(you know it makes sense)
Ian Campbell Folk band (highly influential. Go on the 2 Dave's)
Robert Plant band
Planxty band / Bothy band / Moving Hearts
Wolftones (ah rebel music)
The Pogues

You've been looking through my iPod..... Add a solo set from your man Christy and you're there... I have seen The Pogues on their Brixton Christmas shows the past couple of years and they have been superb.

Cue Father Ted scenario:

Father Dougal: "The Dubliners - where were they from then Ted?"

You can't use the C-word, Jack. Not unless it's December, then you might get away with it.

By the way, you haven't tried to use the word **** have you?

I don't think he has. But I used the word ****, which is similar.
