Title: Songs and Tunes for the 2006 Wintour
Post by: PaulT on December 06, 2005, 10:04:07 AM
I've been listening to some of the older albums recently, & there's a few songs/tunes I'd like to hear played live by the current line-up:

Battle of the Somme
Cell Song
Merry Sherwood Rangers
Sir Patrick Spens

Anyone else have any ideas/suggestions?

Not so much a specific song but I would love to hear Simon sing more of the stuff that Trevor used to sing as his voice is in the perfect regsiter to do so now.

Couldn't agree more. Simon's voice seems to have taken on a deeper tone over the years. Rich, dark, chocolatey velvet. "Dark Eyed Molly" - always a favourite of mine, and seems to me to be a good example of this. Trevor's voice had the amazing ability to rumble the soul. :)

Good call, JD.  I'd not thought of that.  Cracking idea.  "Polly on the Shore" springs to mind.

I'd really love to hear Simon sing Knights of the Road, it's one of my favourites (one of umpteen, but they'd have to do a week long gig to get all of them in) ;) ;)

Concerning "Simon Nicol sings Trevor Lucas" I´d say that The Nostalgia Dept could easily be in favour of a "Rosie", side 1 effort:
Chris taking on "Rosie", a joint effort on "Matthew, Mark, Luke & John", followed by the good suggestion above,"Knights on the Road" Peggy taking the mandolin  lead in "Peggy´s Pub" and then finishing off with "The Plainsman".
OK, it might be a bit too much, but I couldn't´t help proposing! ;)
But one or two.....???

Sounds good to me Staffan ;D The Plainsman!!! another favourite :)

I know that there are some that consider Hungarian Rhapsody as just a bit of trivia, but I love it!!! and whats wrong with a bit of humour?  Hmm? this is going to be a long set, isn't it?

Nicol does Lucas...hmmmm. Why not?

I've long thought the outputs of the Lucas-Donahue(-Denny) era were Fairport's best post-'FULL HOUSE' showings - with the honorable exception of the phenomenal 'GLADYS' LEAP'.

'RISING...' is a little sheened-off but nothing like as bad as made out to be at the time while I would vote 'LIVE' as one of the best live albums ever - with the recently-released 'WHO KNOWS/'

I'll continue where a typo rudely interrupted me....

confirming the awsome power of that particular version. 'I don't reckon 'NINE' is quite what it was cracked up to be at the time but side 1 is pretty impressive and 'Bring 'Em Down'  is just stunning!!!!

So, yeah, let Simon go for it! Recreate some of the flavour of one of Fairport's best and historically most overlooked eras.

Why not do some joint gigs with The Yardbirds and get Jerry to guest...?

The 'short-livedness' of the relationship is undoubtedly due to unexpected personality differences - though the Yardbirds web site is suggesting the rupture was due to 'business commitments'.

Considering what an accommodating personality Mr Donahue usually is - excpept when it comes to his guitar sound! - that would indicate the problem is more The Yardbirds than his.

Which leads us to a potentially very interesting situation:-

Simon asks Jerry - the one living unique* survivor  of the one  line-up he wasn't part of - to be part of the current scene. (Eitber as a regular member of the band or as a featured guest in the way Papa John Creach was in the 1978, 1987 & 1989 tours of Fairport's old nemesis, Jefferson Airplane/Starship.) *Peggy & Swarb, thankfully, continued!)

So, how about it, Simon: give Jerry a blow?!?!?!?

it would certainly be a solution to my problem with the current lead guitarless line up
and allow the birthday boy to play the fiddle  rather than be the lead guitarist they are crying out for but having to do it on the fiddle

That would be great, wouldn't it?  Have Jerry re-join up with Fairport?

Imagine: demon versions of 'Fiddlestix' on the road! No longer confined to just Cropredy; but every night they fancied it.

Jerry & the two fiddles. Wow!!!!!

And, who knows, if they pass by Birmingham and a certain Mr Swarbrick continues to make progress with his health....

Jerry & the three fiddles. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^-^

If they played any of these i would be happy......

A few oldies:-
Fotheringay
Autopsy
Million Dollar Bash

A haumting intrumental:-
Sigh Beg Sigh Mor

Chris leslie at his best:-
My Love Is In America

It would also be nice if they kept Matty Groves off the set list for this tour as well as it drives me mad!!  ( apart from being played to death)

Drop Matty and bring back Spanish Main with Chris giving it some serious damage on the batocaster - and bring back Dangerous at the same time!!

I can't wait to hear Matty again, nothing beats it in my opinion and the recent full band versions have brought it to perfection, even better than the lovely slow version with Sandy on Live Convention.  Tam Lin would be good but I'm not holding out too much hope.  Apart from that I hope they keep I'm Already There, a modern FC classic IMHO.

Hear Hear!!  I couldn't have put it better myself Steve.  ;D

Would really love to hear Tam Lin live (sigh)  I'm Already There, wonderful! masterful!
But I would still love to hear Simon do, Knights of the Road (I mean, like, really, truly, desparately!!!!)
and Hungarian Goulash (I like it!) and I hope they're not too quick to drop Genesis Hall from the play list, another favourite :) but, in truth, I have several favourites ;)

just tried a picture of the band with all these tree smileys in it, like a winter tour scene, but was only allowed six smileys per post, so i'm afraid you'll just have to make your own, it wasn't very good anyway.... :-\
