Title: How to modify posts
Post by: Neil67 on November 26, 2010, 06:05:49 PM
I would appreciate some guidance on modifying ones posts, please. The suggestion in the  notes is that there is both a "modify" and a "remove" button an author can use. Unfortunately, try as I might, I cannot fine these! Should a Mod take pity on me, the precise modification I would like to make is to correct the title of my last post so as to remove the definitive article and name Fairport's forthcoming album correctly. Ta.

At the risk of double posting, these two buttons DO appear in this post!

You only see them for about 45 minutes after you post. It's to stop people editing posts once they've been replied to.

That's because the board lets you do both within a specific time limit of posting but I can't remember how long it is though -an hour?

After that you can't do anything about it unless you ask a moderator to do so.. :)

Edit: Ah Mike got here first ;D

Thanks very much indeed Mike and Jude. Totally understandable, that. Let's hope a moderator sees my plea!

Looked it up, it's 30 minutes, as per:

Quote
Oh $#@! what have I said!
After posting you have 30 minutes to edit what you have written. After that it's there forever. This is done to prevent people changing the meaning of a post, when it has been replied to.
Only under really exceptional circumstances will it be changed, if you ask a moderator and doing this only draws attention. So it's best to leave it and let it be forgotten.

I always thought that one's most recent post stayed open for editing regardless of time, no?

I'm sure I've edited after more than an hour before.

That'll probably be down to the holistic member grading algorithm that the custom title faeries installed last April.  It analyses key words and posting frequencies and applies / restricts privileges accordingly.  It doesn't work very well but it refuses to be uninstalled, they tried, it just magically reappears the next day :-\

Is that like a loyalty card? Will it carefully study my output so that the more nonsense I post the more I get emails suggesting topics on which I might like to post nonsense?

Very similar only it doesn't send emails, it's top secret technology that uses a type of auto suggestion which is encoded via subsonic binaural beats that it plays through your PCs speakers but you can't actually hear*.

*If your cat throws up a furball each time you post on talkawhile, that's a bug they've not fixed yet, disable the sound in control panel or kick the cat out before posting.  However note that disabling the sound may result in not being allowed to post.

As I suspected. I bet that's why my dog has gone deaf

Thank you. That was the intention.

Thanks very much, that seems to be typical of the arrogance shown by one or two members, and all so unnecessary.

Stephen, I cannot imagine why you persist in posting insults and snide remarks. And all, as you say, so unnecessary.

Please consider another approach.

All I have done is ask a simple question. If the answer is not known I cannot imagine why a simple friendly answer cannot be given. I am very insulted indeed.

All I have done is ask a simple question.

The answer was somewhat tongue in cheek, but accurate.
