Ok, so the Top 10 RT songs thread is going nicely, how about everyone's Top 10 RT Albums ? Again, post-Fairport only, here's 10 for starters :

1. I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight
2. First Light
3. Daring Adventures
4. Hand Of Kindness
5. Hokey Pokey
6. Mock Tudor
7. Dream Attic
8. You ? Me ? Us ?
9. Henry The Human Fly
10. Electric (snuck in at number 10 but still thinking about it)

As before, ask me again in about 20 minutes and I might've changed my mind  :)

3. Amnesia
4. Mock Tudor
5. Shoot Out The Lights
6. Dream Attic
7. Hand Of Kindness
8. Small Town Romance

But I really don't know his latter-day albums well enough yet to be doing this properly.  I'll do the real top 10 in another few years!

2. Hokey Pokey

There's not many would have Hokey Pokey as their favourite R&L album.  I always think of it as the comparitive lightweight amongst the first three.

I think I'd agree, some cracking songs on it though, particularly Heart Needs a Home and Never Again. Then again, I really rate Old Kit Bag, certainly on a par with Mock Tudor or any subsequent studio album, but no one else seems to agree. I find it perplexing that they can't see that they are wrong!  :)

Yeras ago i picked up v cheap a cd, 'The End of the Rainbow' (An introduction to Richard and Linda Thompson) on Island Remasters.
Before the i pod it was perfect fot the car.
Roll over Vaughan Williams
The poor Ditchling Boy
When I get to the Border
Withered and Died
Bright Lights Tonight
Down where the Drunkards roll.
The end of the rainbow
The Great Valerio
Hokey Pokey
Never again
A heart needs a home.
For shame of doing wrong
Night Comes in
beat the retreat
Dimming of the day
Calvary Cross (live)

This and Mock Tudor still get a lot fo plays.

The Old Kit Bag

Yes!

Here's mine:

Henry The Human Fly
IWTSTBLT (can't be bothered typing I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight)
Pour Down Like Silver
Shoot Out The Lights
Across A crowded Room
Rumor And Sigh
Mock Tudor
Old Kit Bag
Electric (early days, but I do like it more than the previous 2 studio efforts)
In Concert, November 1975 (if only for the tracks that appeared on Guitar,Vocal)

If it was studio albums only I'd probably put Daring Adventures in there in place of In Concert. Hand Of Kindness has some great tracks on it, but I really don't get on with Tear Stained Letter. Haven't got First Light or Sunnyvista.

Ha ha ha!!  It took me a few seconds to work out what you'd done there.  Very funny.

I think it sounds the least dated of the early trio (good work, production team). There are also parts where it sounds positively joyful, although I wouldn't necessarily drop Never Again into the middle of a party compilation. Brechtian, on occasion.

I've included the compilation album (guitar, vocal) as it was the first RT/Fairport album I ever heard though quite a few of the tracks on it have been included on remastered R&L cds.

1. The Old Kit Bag
2. Rumor & Sigh
3. (guitar, vocal)
4.  I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight
5. You? Me? Us?
6. Mock Tudor
7. Daring Adventures
8. 1000 Years of Popular Music
9. Front Parlour Ballads
10. Mirror Blue

I seem to have completely missed the live album More Guitar - don't know how that could have happened!  :o  I didn't know that Kenny Aronoff had played with RT. I love the John (Cougar) Mellencamp albums he played on and Iggy's Brick By Brick.

Colin, I should hide quickly, Mellencamp's not keen on that 'C' word being mentioned!  ;D   I don't he's used it for about 30 years!

I think some of his 80's/90's stuff is great, and Aronoff is highly underated isn't he?

I haven't even heard 10 RT albums in total, I don't think, but I still think Henry the Human Fly is the best.  :)

No votes for Bones of All Good Men, then.

Until now!

I love that album's blend of medieval & (electric) rock.

Yep!...Count me in as well...I love that album, and Peggy, Simon, and DM are staggeringly good ! 8)

Struggling with a top 10, but "Mock Tudor", "Rumor and Sigh", "Bright Lights", and "In Concert 1975" would always be in there no matter what !

My favourite and most played though would have to be "Watching The Dark" ...but as it's a compilation (including the Fairport years) it probably doesn't count... :-\

I have a tale to tell about that album--I had it before it was released!

I got married back in February 1998. Some months before the event, we realised that Fairport were playing Cambridge (where we then lived) on the evening of our wedding day, so we did the obvious thing and bought tickets. I then wrote to Simon to ask if we might have a song dedicated to us that night. I happened to mention, as well, that my intended was a baroque musicologist.

Simon wrote back, promising a dedication, provided that his memory held up. In addition, having learnt of my future wife's musical leanings, he enclosed as a wedding present a cassette of Bones of All Men, some time before its release. Not only that, on the night he remembered the dedication: we had Royal Seleccion No. 13 played for us!
