The only compilation here is Guitar Vocal which, at the time of issue was more or less all previously unreleased material. With a field of 32, some of the entries looked a bit tenuous. My introduction came at the tail end of the Hand of Kindness era and stretched across the Polygram period, so I always rate those albums higher than (say) some of the classic Island recordings. The Albions have been usurped by the Steeleyes. There's only so many leagues we can run and we need an even number. I love the Albions but their catalogue is bewildering and I suspect insufficiently well known in its more obscure corners to a lot of people. I'd happily see Rise Up take on any team. Perhaps an exhibition match agains the eventual winners or we can have an odds & sods league next year featuring the Albions, Swarb, Simon's solo stuff etc. Personally I'd love to do an Oysterband league. In all seriousness, if this has really captured people's imagination I am happy to run an expanded version of the Folk Rock Championship next season with maybe 8 tournaments (to be defined but I'd like to include Oysterband and the cream of Fairport offshoots not covered elsewhere. I will be happy to take suggestions for other options, though my knowledge of some of the likely candidates may be sketchy) and an extended field of competitors leading to a more substantial Champions League. I will also see if I can structure it in such a way that some of the winners are less predictable and level the playing field for the minnows. Not sure quite how to do that yet but I'll put my thinking cap on. I am tallied out! Easy - just the Dead albums before Garcia died (the "pre-dead Dead" ?? ;D ) to include all the studio albums and the official live ones that were on their two major labels, probably less than 20 albums or so all told. Forget about all the "Dick's Picks" and the other "From the Vault" stuff. And Dylan, of course, would be very straightforward...for someone else to organize. NOT ME! |
