Sir John gives me guidance

« on: December 10, 2009, 02:55:11 PM »

This has been bugging me for nearly 40 years!

Marion Appleton did the cover painting for the (first) Fotheringay album - see below. I'm sure it's a sort of homage to a Tudor or early Stuart painting  - I made the connection as soon as I bought the original vinyl album in 1970. Trouble is, I couldn't then remember what the original painting was and haven't seen it since. The original has a bunch of fancily dressed courtier types holding lutes etc in a similar pose to Sandy, Trev, Jerry, Pat and Gerry.

I know Joe Boyd thought the album art was cr*p but he may have missed the connection. I also believe the Scissor Sisters in their turn posed for a shot on one of their albums which resembled the Fotheringay cover.

Any ideas anybody?

Marion Appleton's cover art for Rising For The Moon was much better, although her artwork for Fotheringay was very distinctive.
