Title: Judy Dyble 'Talking With Strangers' Album Launch Gig
Post by: jonnybrilliant on August 22, 2009, 12:09:56 AM
Hello, happy to say that anybody who has bought tickets for the 100 club gig on Thursday from Talkawhile, is invited to both parts of the show. Please just print off your paypal payment page, and bosh, your in.

Anybody who hasn't bought a ticket yet, Judy and her all star band with the added attraction of Jacqui Mcshee from Pentangle looking likely to be adding vocals (we are thrilled by this!) featuring Simon N, Tim Bowness, Alistair Murphy, Mark Fletcher, Laurie A'Cort, and Rachel Hall, + support sets from No-Man, Sand Snowman and our very own David Hughes, there are a few left, at a measly tenner a pop, from www.brilliantmusic.bigcartel.com, or they will be £12 on the night.

Press show at 5pm, and main gig begins at 7.30. All finished just before 10.

Look forward to saying hello to a few of you again on Thursday.

Cheers!

JB

For various reasons, my offer of accomodation in London has fallen through.

Can anyone going to the gig or nearby possibly spare me a couch for the night?

Another idea is this:

http://www.piccadillybackpackers.com/

A room for £12 a night! No extras but I work with someone who regularly uses this (with the megabus = cheap weekend!) and he says it's really good value.

Good luck Mike!

Just printed out my receipt, but delighted to find email from Jon telling me I was on the list at the 100 Club!  :D

Just wondering how many other TAWs will be going to the press bit of the proceedings - and does anyone know if the 100 Club will be selling food? Living the rock'n'roll life is all very well but I need to know where my supper is coming from! Or are we allowed out between sets?

Good luck to all concerned - we are really looking forward to it.

There will be time between the sets when the 100 club will be cleared so we can sound check for the evening, so there might well be 20mins when you can all rush off and find a bag of crisps and a bar of chocolate..
Actually I don't know what's happening about food, but there's always Dan O's pub!

If Jon wakes up and sees this he'll probably know more and post something... :)

Edit: Just checked the 100 Club site and they do have a cafe with food, I'll try to find out opening times....

I'm hoping to be there if I can getaway from work in time. The plan is to get to Waterloo for about 4:20, but it could all go horribly wrong. If it does, I'll still make the main gig  ;D

Looking forward to a great nigt out and meeting lots of TAW'ers

Ok, I'll be arriving in London at about 3pm and will head the Blue Posts until the press gig and then be back in between the two shows.

I think most who are going from here have met me before but if not, don't be shy about coming up to say hello! I'm easily recognisable and if you are in any doubt, I'm missing the left leg of my glasses, so that should confirm it!

I'm afraid you did, Puggs. It was a marvelous evening!

Jude was the picture of calm and elegance, sang brilliantly and really looked like she was having fun. The band were slick and complemented the songs well. Simon shall now be known as The Pillar of Folk for his pin-point support. Tim and Alistair and the rest filled the sound out just right. They played pretty much the whole album (missing only the Harpsong wig-out) and left everyone on their feet calling for more. A super performance.

DH's set was sweet but all too short. We kind of wanted him to play twice as long (especially when we found that, unfortunately, we're not really NoMan fans and felt they went a little too long :-/ ) All in all it was a great evening and one that we wouldn't have missed for the world! Excellent excellent stuff.

Enjoyed A pre-gig beer and rum with DH, Anji, Nuthouse and Cocker round at the Blue Posts. Nice pub you've got there Dan! I'm now a little miffed that I didn't take the opportunity to get a photo of Cocker without his cap...

Cheers

Nick

Safely back in Norf London and pretty much agree with what Nick said, although we quite liked NoMan who were beset with technical problems - worth another go.

We met Chris B, MikeB, Speleolgist, and FarnishK (hope I've got those right) upstairs in Blue Posts before the show. Also met Anji, Nuthouse and Dan in the course of the evening. I wonder how many hands would have gone up if there had been a "wave if you are on TalkaWhile" request.

Jude and her band were fab - sign them up for Cropredy!

While we are having a 'sea of love' moment  ;) I would like to say a few thank you's - firstly to Dan O and his better half, who hardly could have been more accomodating and supportive hospitality wise, and to all the musicians - David and Anji for a superb set, fervant and unstinting support, Sand Snowman, who played a 20 minute long solo guitar piece, that suited the occasion with a wonderfully left field slice of musical genius/nuttiness, Judy's band, Tim, Alistair, Laurie, Rachel, and Mark - brilliant, all.

And a very special thank you here to yer' very own Simon Nicol, who was superb, and added hugely to the musical quality, and gave his time to rehearse, and an entire day yesterday (I hope he won't mind me saying this, all for the price of a good bottle of wine). In my experience, for an 'A' lister to be that helpful, accomodating, and genuinely humble, is a rare, rare animal. Simon has turned a blind eye to me hawking his name to help promote Judy (though I have tried hard to behave here!), and his performance on the album, and with the live side have really helped us put Judy back to where I feel she should be in the musical world.

And a final thank you to the wonderful people of Talkawhile, a lovely, kind and genuine bunch you all, and I think I can say that Jude could hardly have failed last night, with 150+ people in that historic old venue as keen for her to do well as I was.

Thank you to the people who travelled miles, Jersey, Devon, Spain, Edinburgh to name just a few, and the people who finished work early, got stuck on tubes, and just made the effort to be there.

Thank you all, thank you.

Jon the (proud) manager. (Who probably none of you will catch in such a weak emotional moment ever again!!)

An absolutely stunning evening.

Well done to all involved and it was lovely to meet up with a decent number of TAWs.

I made it back home on the sleeper train, despite all the seats being full.

Off to sleep now. I have £6.44 left to my name but am immensly richer for having been at the 100 Club yesterday.

Post by: Keith on August 28, 2009, 10:32:46 AM
Well that was very nice, although I must add to the 100 Club's list of achievements as being the only venue I know where if you want the best sound you have to have your view of the lead singer obscured by a gigantic square pillar!

Nice to meet Tim and his wife (sorry, forgotten her name), Speleologist (whose combined knowledge of jazz-funk-prog with Dan and Tim Bowness nearly gave me an embolism), Dan and his better half  ;D for their excellent hospitality and extremely reasonable prices, legless Mike, Chris, Nick, Fi, Anji, David and Cocker - yes, the real deal! - and probably others, but given the frenetic nature of the evening it's all a bit of a blur.

Yes, David's set was far too short - wasn't impressed with NoMan Lite, and would have loved some more Dengie musical wit, but hey! We can't all like everything.

Spoke to a visibly nervous Jude along with a watchful Simon at the outrageously priced 100 Club bar; but the set went off without a hitch, and I think Jude is secretly starting to enjoy being up on stage. Very well done to the whole band for conjuring a little bit of magic in the bowels of an Oxford Street building.

Oh, and I managed to wreak havoc in Currys on the way  ;D

I simply can't add much to the superlatives used above - those who missed it but could've been there - you should be kicking yourselves....your penalty should be putting Jude on in your area!
Superb evening, even if some wasn't quite my cup of tea either - sorry, No-man Lite!

Alighting back in Banbury, who should also emerge, but Mr Nicol - who simply must have flown up to Marylebone....

Photos are off the camera, but unlikely to appear until next week as I'm out at festivals all weekend.

Well done Jude  ;D (and Jon for organising it, and everyone else!) I loved Judes set, and wished David had been on for longer.

It was lovely, and well worth the logistical planning required for a trip to the smoke unaccompanied by child, and when one of you has had a van to deliver back to Egham in the afternoon, and the Bakerloo line isn't running (thanks, TFL, how to you know when I'm coming to London?). Sad to have missed any post show gatherings, we dashed off but missed the train we went for anyway, would have been nice to have a mineral water afterwards with you all.

Thankyou for altering the title Nick, excellent.

I have to say I am wildly blushing here  ;D but I have woken up feeling very delighted and with lovely memories of the day.

One of the many internet friends that I met for the first time in person yesterday gave me a painting that she had created of 'Flower' (the old greyhound that I recently lost) from a photo on my Facebook, so that was a bit of a tearful moment.
The whole thing was like being surrounded by a musical hug really  ;D

And yah boo to the Bakerloo line closure, which added a complication to the day that I could have done without, but didn't spoil it in the least.. ;D

How fab was all that then? :D 8)

I think TFL have got something against folkies! They closed the Victoria line on the day of FC's Barbican gig too.

Sounds as though everyone had a great time last night. I wish I could have been there.

Globbits and further globbits  >:(
I couldn't go because Lady YaBB had arranged something else. I complained to her about this, saying how great the reviews were.
Evidently I didn't explain properly and she would have much preferred to go to see Jude. She has been playing the CD in the car on the way to work all week and loves it, but didn't know what it was (I'd just left it on an mp3 disc).

I'm coming very late to this (can only plead a very hectic weekend of work, travelling and seeing the family all too briefly), but I feel I should echo others comments as it was a truly amazing night. It really was a privilege to be there as these beautiful songs from a lovely album had their first live airing.

Jude, you were superb. It worked perfectly live. I do hope there wil be more opportunities to see you perform these songs. ANd what a great band to help you do it.

Plus, of course, Mr Hughes in support.

Plus Dan and his Mrs in the pub - So much better quality and better prices than at the Club, Oh, and excellent Steak Pudding.

And meeting up with so many people.

All in all a night to remember for a very long time.

Well I am delighted that you all had a good time and that you liked the performances and the songs. :-*

And I want to add my thanks to all the musicians that played with and around me and to the splendid Dan and Mrs Dan who looked after everyone. What a great pub that is! (And of course Jon the M who tied himself in knots organising it all) ;D

I don't have plans to do any more live things, I really want to make a start on the next set of songs and I do need to concentrate on that.  :D

But ...... never say never... ::)

Yes 25th September. It can be pre-ordered from Tonefloat here
http://www.crazy-diamond.nl/tonefloat/html/store.htm

the blurb says
the 180 grams lp will be available in a limited edition of 500 copies on black 180 grams vinyl, complete with postcard autographed by judy. the release date is set for september 25.

(Mind you I thought it was the 29th September, but it's only 4 days difference)

I did too. I spent ages signing the postcards just before the launch gig. Some have got kisses on and some haven't  ::) ;D

I've come to this one very late, various reasons why, but...

Just want to say that this sort of thing is exactly why TW is such a great board. It can be funny, it can be argumentative, it can be educational, it can be all bloomin' sorts. But above all, it's a very friendly place, and almost, like a very large extended family. This, "Judy Dyble 'Talking With Strangers' Album Launch Gig" is probably the best post I've ever seen.

Latest DGM (Discipline Global Mobile - the KC/Fripp web portal) mailing has a link to the album and a very nice write-up.

Apparently Jude is both legendary and reclusive.  The former is without doubt, but I really do think she should work harder on the latter  ;)

But enough of this "specialist music" nonsense; TWS should be in the "Best of 2009" category full stop!

Looking back over my purchases this year, it's definitely the best album I've bought - in any category.

I like the new artwork very much, and slightly more than the original to be honest. Poor old Pat the Drummer though -almost everyone else gets a band credit for their most famous association. Is it because Mr Mister weren't cool enough?  ;D

HMV have TWS in the "specialist music" section, along with the usual suspects, Steve Earle, Cara Dillon, Robert Cray, BB King, Fairport Convention and other such stuff, and, er, Barry Manilow. Has he gone folk, or bluegrass or something?  :o ::)

You know how you write things down and send them off to someone, and everybody checks it for spelling mistakes and bloopers and all that kind of stuff and then a couple of months later you realise that you have missed something absolutely vital? ::)

This is something that will be addressed very soon.. Poor Pat..I've been so unfair  :'(
