Oh, I canīt sign in, because I am not a British citizen  :'( :-[
But I spend a lot of time in England. Do you think that will count?

No.

Only local people can vote for knighthoods.

You could still write to No 10 though Ulla and add your opinion.

The knighthood is 3 times higher than the humble MBE.

So what has Ashley done that entitles him to an honour 3 times 'highr' than Martin Carthy MBE? Eh?

Because that is what the honours Committee will want to know....assuming someone with some clout in this field has sponsored said nomination.
As it stands, it has zilch chance, and may even count against him, if someone with clout subsequently puts in a sensible MBE nomination in the near future.

No, Ashley would be embarrassed by a knighthood nomination - get Martin to sponsor an MBE nomination & likely as not, he'll get it. This'll just get laughed out of No. 10.

No it won't...it will be ignored.  Just like all the other 'online petitions'...  At least if someone turns up at your door with a few boxes of names someone has to let you in..this way they don't even have to do that!

I'd agree that Martin should be knighted and Norma given a Damehood first...but in a country where a few years in the Foreign Office earns you an OBE then I'm sure they ought to be able to find something for Ashley.  And the rest of the band.  Lord Swarbrick anybody?   ;)

Loads of debate on this subject on The List..

We can vote if we wish to and believe AH deserves some recognition..

Or not vote if we don't...

S'up to each of us..

(And YES for SWARB too!!)

Isn't the level covered by the weasel words "or whatever alternative honour she may deem appropriate"? I assume that this is some sort of official suggested wording.

Anywhoo, I've signed, too.

Oh, indeed it is. But as davidmjs agrees, it will just be completely ignored. THe only way for someone (any British Citizen) to be honoured is for them to be nominated via the form on the Cabinet website. We went through this when some McTellites thought Ralph was due one. This petition won't even get seen by the honours scrutiny committee and is therefore fairly useless.

It needs someone ackowledged within the folk world to be a primary sponsor of a nomination for him, and willing to take time out to support it in interview with said Committee. We can then all sign as secondary sponsors......and I reckon he'd get it.

But this? Nah, sorry - it'll just embarrass Ashley.

I'd accept a knighthood and I wouldn't be embarrassed at all.

In fact, I think I'll start a petition...

They do indeed, but not straight away - they work up from MBE / OBE, through CBE and then, if they're still treading the boards when they ought to have their feet up, a knighthood. Which was one of my points.

If truth be told I think I'm with J.G. Ballard:

"Thousands of medals are given out in the name of a non-existent empire - it makes us look a laughing stock and encourages deference to the crown "

Tasha's already posted that link Chris.

Interestingly 1 in 5 of the refusniks accepted a gong later according to that report. Lenny Henry alledgedly didn't want one from John Major but accepted one from Tony Blair. Hmmm

Chris Bates said "They do indeed, but not straight away - they work up from MBE / OBE, through CBE and then, if they're still treading the boards when they ought to have their feet up, a knighthood. Which was one of my points."

Sorry to disagree with you Chris, but as someone whose father is an MBE, the above is a complete load of tosh.

The orders are given in relation to the person and their achievements. They are not "sponsored", as you put it, by other people who have honours. They rely on nominations from anybody who wishes to do so.

The nominations are helped if they are supported by various associates of the nominee, be they personal, professional or otherwise.

As you will see, i have signed the petition. I do not believe that Ashley would be at all embarrassed by this. I think he would actually be quite touched by the sentiment.

If people do want to sponsor an award for Ashley then you do also need to make representations to the relevant government departments.

Yours
Simon Care

"complete load of tosh" !

Whatever is this Board coming to, when such inflammatory language is used, and such a stance taken,
even by someone whose father is an MBE

Didn't Michael Winner make a remark something like "That's what they give to people who clean the toilets at Kings Cross" then said he was holding out for the knighthood.

Mind you, although he may never get another chance of an MBE, but he'll always be an AR*E.

I sit corrected, Simon - thanks! I was reliably informed that the primary signature on the nomination carried a lot more weight if he / she was a senior figure in the nominees field.....

If you had enough money, you could buy Ashley a Lordship.

After all, Canuck media baron Conrad Black bought himself one.  Renounced his Canadian citizenship and all, to become Lord Black of Crosstemper er, ...harbour.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/black_conrad/

'Course, now that he's been indicted in the U.S. for embezzlement, he's whining for his Canadian citizenship back. And I expect ol' Liz'll have to rescind the honour if he's convicted.

Cheers, Hester
P.S. Was Otts the guy who said cheese too much?

With a little bit of time and effort, on his part, I could have Ashley knighted as a Templar at the local masonic hall in Bulls Gap, Tennessee, within about 4-6 weeks, providing he pays his fees on time!

Let me know if this is a direction we should pursue.

Affectionately,
Sir Wiley of the Gap
